Personally I'm going to recommend not looking at the site until after you've finished FFXII for those that care, but it's not anything big.

Trailer is up (and a month old, but I just found this). The characters have been re-drawn and not for the better, but it's more FFXII so I'm willing to ignore it. Vaan will apparently obtain the Master Sword and it looks like Penelo might be an actual dancer this time instead of just having Sailor Moon Limit Breaks.

if im not mistaken, S-E said this game isnt anykind of a sequel to FFXII. Its more, a redrawn redone new story using the same universe and some characters?

That's right.

So this doesn't consider that the events of FFXII happened? That is made of lame and bullshit.

Screenshots I've seen in magazines have the character models looking very similar to those in the Kingdom Hearts series.

I'm surprised this is coming out on DS.

Enough with the final fantasy franchises.

You've seen screens? I thought that only art has been revealed. When you mention KH, do you mean Chain of Memories or the console ones? Does the game use sprites or 3D models?

I was wrong to say screenshots; they're actually pre-rendered images, the same ones used on the website. I guess I should have actually clicked the link before posting.

Based on the animated gif sprites used on the website, though, I'd assume that's what the game uses.

yeah that trailer means nothing to me since it shows no gameplay at all

More is good as far as I'm concerned, they'd have to work hard to fuck this up for me.

Sucks that they aren't in any way related story-wise, but I'll probably buy it anyway. Oh well.

Though this not be a true sequel, I always read that the game is a sidestory that takes place AFTER FFXII. Vaan will be 18 in Revenant Wings (as opposed to 17 in FFXII). There'll be nothing dealing with the Ashe storyline this time around and Vaan will be the real main character.

the artwork looks like ff tactics 2. i wonder if they'll stick with the same play style as XII or try something new.

The battle system is supposed to be mostly new. Gambits are still there, though more simplified. Espers are more important this time around for the battles from what I hear. Revenant Wings is supposed to have the most amount of summons compared to previous FFs. What are the odds that there'll be a Kefka and Sephiroth summon? Haha.

PS: The game is developed by the FFX/FFX-2 team.

Man, fuck the haters of FFX. X-2 doesn't exist in my book (it was wretched, couldn't handle it) but I loved FFX, it's my second-favorite (after XII).

That sounds like a sequel to me. It doesn't have to be Same Exact Storyline Part 2 which confirms what it looked like to me in the trailer. I'm cool with that.

There's nothing wrong with there being more Final Fantasies, all it really means is that the same teams of people have been making the games and establishes that. All it simply does is establish a reference point for people to know who they're dealing with and what to expect. Games like Madden may as well have a name change instead of being named after each year because zomg it's madden 11 in my books?!

And VIII is fine if you could stand the horribly annoying stock system. Everything else about the game was fine, whereas VII, everything was fine, no annoying stock system, enjoyable story, not a perfect game, but an ideal way to get people into the RPG genre. In which it truly did so for many many people.

I'm stoked for FFIII this week though.

Really, if Square wasn't making a ton of Final Fantasy games, they'd be making a ton of RPGs amongst their three or whatever teams with different settings and characters and gameplay systems.

I love that i just bought a DS, and now this FF game is being created for it, as well as FFIII is coming out on the 14th.. :D

I will buy it regardless, i mean, i am sure that i have played worse games.

I still haven't finished FFXII. :(

I put like four hours in then bought Gears of War. Maybe I'll go back soon.

See, I've had a fatty DS since they launched here, and I've been wanting a Lite. This blows, now I want that Lite quite a bit.

Mine has scratches from my nephew etc, so buying a new one wouldn't be out of the question for me.

Looks like FFXII with sprites. It makes me weep, it's so beautiful. Please dear God make it as good as it looks and not some unholy child of Tactics Advance and X-2 that by pedigree it should be.

Holy shit that looks amazing. FF12 with FF6-style sprites and the same PC-style gameplay.

What I really want is a DS with Celes and Locke, or just Kefka.

Game comes out today in Japan, some impressions from Dengeki DS and Wii Style as relayed through IGN:

I can't decide if I want to pick this up or not, but I think I'm going to pass since I still haven't even played the original FFXII.

Detailed impressions from IGN. It's the new FFX-2, complete with no overworld movement where you just jump between missions, but the battles are an RTS with no difficulty. I've got a strong feeling this will be good enough to play through but will be primarily coasting by on the awesomeness that is FFXII.

In addition to selecting individual units by pointing with the stylus, you can also use the stylus to draw a rectangle around groups in order to issue group commands. It's possible to make an entire flock of troops move to a single spot or attack a single enemy with just a couple of motions.

Depends on how good the world is in the first place. FFXII:RW is game four (and five will be along shortly) in year nine of Ivalice-based games and I'm pretty happy about it, I honestly don't see what the issue is.

Now, if the first game or two comes out and they're shit, then yeah, nine more years of that would suck. But all we really have to go on are some concepts of the battle system and visual designs for one of the games, not exactly enough to know if six varied projects across multiple formats are going to suck ass. Personally, I'd rather they do more of that and try to develop and expand on the worlds a lot more. Another Chrono game related in the same ways as CC was to CT? Hell yes. I'd even be a huge fan of retconning Vagrant Story into Ivalice and doing a new game which ties the two together, or at least uses concepts and ideas from VS.

I think Squeenix is acting a little prematurely when it comes to this 10 year thing.I know videogames have to be planned out and they take time, but I think they should wait and see how the public takes to XIII before they shoot their load into this world for a decade.

And I havent played Vagrant Story in a while but I consider it to have taken place in between Tactics and FFXII in Ivalice.I mean come on, Riskbreaker clan status, Grimoires all over the place, and didnt they mention Valendia somewhere in game?Thats enough for me. The part in FFXII before you enter the Barheim passage and have to fight those fatty Seeqs? That spartan-ish music and the look of the area? I know who made this game (err.. half of it) but that just screamed VS to me. If Ashley Riot would have jumped out and Break Arted the fuck out of those guys I wouldnt have been surprised.

Please post impressions when you have some time to dig into it. It was originally on my "buy" list; however, I dropped it off the list due to the excessive number of purchases lately. If it's good, I may have to get it.

After I finish Tales of the Abyss and Mario Galaxy, I am going to do the last dungeon in FF12 and then move onto this.

Plunked down about 25 hours into this so far and am very close to the end. Overall I'd say my earlier statement was spot on:

The story is okay and the bad guy is pretty cool, but I'm really amazed at how easy it is to control and do everything. The only real complaint I have is that for casting spells on other people I wish you could use their portraits at the top of the screen for shortcuts, but otherwise it's great. The difficulty, however, really is the enemies just letting you steamroll them. It wasn't until I had almost 80% of the missions done that I've encountered trouble, and it's trouble that has to be beaten by leveling up instead of using strategy (granted, those are all side missions that are giving me issue).

So, yeah. I'm enjoying it though it could really be so much more, but at least the gameplay is as smooth as it can be. Makes me long for the art style and writing of the first, and I want more of the mature characters and less of the gang of kids.

Mech you can use the characters face image for ensuring a
direct spell hit. The fights can be a real clusterfuck tho.
I'm stuck at the stealth mission.

Oh and this game is on sale at BB for $30 this week.

so now that this game has come and gone, whats TNL think about it after playing/beating it? Worthwhile? (looking to give my DS a bone and toss it a few more games)
