That's a good question. If they are DVD's this update would only need to be a software package, which any Wii owner could download.

Anyone know for sure if Wii discs are DVDs or a proprietary format?

Well, dreamcast discs were a tad different, but they still figured that shit out. WASUP BOOT DISC WITH THE MOOSE.

God damn it. I really needed a tenth DVD player, but I don't want to wait.

Physically they're the same as DVDs but much like the GC discs were different than just Mini-DVDs, the Wii discs store information on the disc in a different way than DVDs.
