I've got hdloader... I need to update.

Thanks for the info, Nomi and others. I've just bought a 120GB SeaGate drive (it was one of the more popular ones on the compatability list) from NewEgg, and the HDLoader software. Now all's I need is the Network Adaptor. They seem to go for between $35-45-ish on ebay.

Couple quick questions:

1. I have an old US PS2 Fat, and a new silver JP PS2 Slim. Can I use HDLoader to play imports on my US PS2? No biggie if I can't, just curious.

2. Another thing I'm just curious about, as I intend to use this on my PS2 Fat, but does it work at all on the PS2 Slims? I know I remember reading that the PS2 harddrive wasn't supported on those (so FFXI fans were out of luck), but HDLoader is supported on at least some of the Slim models according to the HDLoader site. But if the Slim model doesn't support HDs, what good is HDLoader? Or is it that the Slim just doesn't support the official Sony HD? What am I not understanding? Thanks in advance.

Try to find one at EB/Gamestop, they're only $15 used if you find them there.

Once you get the game in the hard drive, region won't matter. Easiest way is by connecting the hard drive to your PC (using an enclosure or just using an available IDE slot) and using Winhiip to put the game in. That way is also the fastest way to put games in because the PS2 reads DVDs slower than a PC drive. If you don't want to do that, you have to do a swap trick or have a modded PS2 already.

Don't bother with the HDLoader on a slim PS2, you'd need to buy an HDCombo (which would cost extra and you'd have to solder), or go for USBAdvance (which has a very crappy compatibility). Stick with the fat PS2s and save yourself the trouble.

HDloader is a fat PS2's best friend (assuming it has a bay, the old ones don't like my JPS2), and like Mikhal said, it plays them without ever 'noticing' region. I have US and JP games on my loader, on a USPS2 and I've noticed a thing for difference.

So I could just buy a copy of darkstalkers on ebay and pick up no problem? Sounds pretty sweet.

Well, no problem playing it, but problems installing it. If it's import, you need to put the HD in your PC and install it, or set up a memory card exploit to send it to the PS2 via network if you can.

Sadly, from what I recall, Vampire Chronicles doesn't work on the HDLoader, so don't even bother doing that.

Seagate I believe...but I'm pretty sure with my model PS2 I can't go higher than a 200 gig drive, at least that was what we figured out when I set it all up a year or so ago...

Best solution is to spend another 30 bucks and get the flip top combo -- so in essence you have a fat PS2 with HD and the flip top, so you can load games of any region onto the HD without any computer needed. ALSO, patched games, such as FFXII work best this way. I mean using a computer is fine too, but then you can load patched ISOs directly into the PS2.

Makes FFXII run so much faster. I'm really ticked because Tales of the Abyss randomly freezes on battles and is a perfect candidate for HDloader, the load times are ridiculous... Fighting games are great too, like KoFXI, 2006, and whatnot, run like their on cartridge. You can also play preview copies games as well without a modded PS2 -- you just take the disc, make an ISO out of it on the computer and send it over to the HD, so it's also a reviewers best friend...

So I got all my stuff, set it up, and installed a bunch of games. Question:

Does FFXII not run from HDLoader without being patched first? And how do I go about doing that? This is getting irritating. I thought it would be simpler....

Correct, FFXII needs patching.

You'll need to 1. make an ISO out of your game (DVD Decrypter isn't bad for this, if you can still find it), 2. get the patch attached below, 3. use PPF O Matic ( http://www.paradogs.com/download/pdx-pom3.zip ) to patch said file to your ISO, and 4. reburn it.

Actually, shit, if you don't have a fliptop lid, you might not be able to do this at all.
