Brief Summary: My husband is in the Airforce. He's currently in Technical School. We're going to be based in Japan. Northern part of Japan. Like as North as you can get and still be on the island. 3 hour train ride from Tokyo. For at least 24 months.
Do you folks have any advice for me? I plan on getting a conversational Japanese cd. Any good books, movie? Anyone living there or have lived there that can give me a heads up?

I'll try to keep that in mind. I do have a tazer and I do love to kick men in the nuts...
First month will be exciting. Second month will be less so. Third month you'll hate the country. Fourth month you'll know if it's a place you can stand to live or not.
You'll learn far more just being there than you will with any CD, book, etc. As long as you at least try to learn and use the language, people will have a lot of respect for you. Don't be afraid to get off of the military base and out into the "real" world: you'll be fine, you'll learn far more doing so on your own, and it would be a waste of living in a foreign country and just sticking to the base.
If you don't eat a lot of Japanese food right now, start trying some. And I don't mean Americanized stuff like teriyaki chicken, but more authentic stuff. I think the food issue is one of the hardest to get used to, and is the part that will make you the most homesick. Well, you'll have the base and whatnot, so you'll be better off - I was a poor college student living in a dorm apartment, so my options when I wanted "real" food were far more limited.
If you have any questions, just ask, and I'm sure one of us who have the experience can help.

By Northern I assume you mean Hokkaido? It's awesome up there if you like nature...there's alot of trees. Definitely take a look at the national parks as they are pretty nice. Where are you going to be? I lived in Tsurai for awhile, which is about 45 minutes north of Kushiro. The eastern side is pretty cool because everything is in both Japanese and Russian. If you end up in Kushiro at all be sure to stop at the noodle place across from the bus station, it's good. Yes, being a woman in Japan isn't exactly a fun thing, and even though it seems that progress is being made, Japanese society is still very stuck in the role of what a man is and what a woman is, and who can do what. That isn't ALWAYS a bad thing, but women in Japan do indeed get the short end of the stick. (HYUK HYUK)
That said... I'm glad that Japan still has some sexism going on, meaning you can still have countless TV shows with hot girls in bikinis doing silly things for no logical reason.

Secondly, Japanese people believe in being polite in instances that americans would just say their mind. Shidoshi's friends might be trying to be polite and don't feel it is nice to be honest about such things with forigners.
Thirdly, the kind of person that goes to other countrys can be very diffirent from the nations actual natives. Shidoshi has said a couple of times that his friends are people that have been outside of japan before.

Hiragana is used for Japanese words and Katakana for Foreign words (most of the time at least). Learning those at least allows you some level of literacy. Katakana especially will help you a lot. They're really not too hard to learn either so just study them for a few weeks and you'll get em.
Hiragana and Katakana are the simplified character sets of the Japanese syllabary. I'd place precedence on learning Katakana as the type of things of most immediate interest to foreigners are going to be written in katakana. Hiragana is almost only used in writing and shit you won't get into unless you're interested in the Japan thing.

Glad I stumbled upon this thread as I decided to take a trip out to Japan this fall/winter. Like most f-chans I always wanted to go but never took the leap. As I suspected though food will be my enemy.
Well I'm thinking of going for 5-7 days. Anyone of else been there just as a tourist? I'm sure one of you must have pointers besides what has been said already?
If you're only going for 5-7 days, skip Tokyo completely and spend that time in the Kansai region. Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and such would be better IMO.
After seeing a travel show where they climbed Mount Fuji, I've decided seeing that view with my own eyes is one of the things I must do before I die.
