As a kid I was into the castle/robin hood esque sets. I believe that was the point where they started doing more and more specialized pieces.
Now I get them for my son, and they pretty much suck. As previously mentioned, aside from the design of the set there isn't much you can do with them.
A few years ago WalMart was clearing out the Mega Blocks Dragonsline and I picked a few up. Those are total crap. You get a huge box with ten huge pieces.
