Alright, as requested in the Wii thread, here is a seperate Virtual Console thread. Right now, the pickings are pretty slim, but as of 11/26/06 we have:

So far I have gotten Donkey Kong and Mario 64. Donkey Kong identical to the NES game, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the emulation. Visually, it looks identical an NES. Slightly better coloring than I remember, likely due to superior video output. It definately beats the fuzzy filters on my Xbox's emulator. I probably wouldn't have bought it though if there were some better NES games available.

On Mario 64, the playing is perfect, and I like using the Wavebird for it much more than the original N64 pad. However it doesn't seem to look quite as good, but I'm sure that it is because I have an S-video cable for the N64, and am hooking my Wii up through composite.

What else has everyone else been playing, and what are your impressions of it? No hating please, let's try to keep this an informative thread.

I read that Mario 64 looks fantastic if your using component since all the VC games support 480p. I guess every game is stretched to fit the widescreen though.

So far I've only picked up Bonk. I'm really impressed by the menus and interface for the virtual console; really slick looking. For me the big draw to the VC is the updates to the games; we've been promised graphics/content updates, but hopefully the rumors of online play are also true.

I got some Wii points at Launch, and some as a gift. I've picked up Sonic, Zelda, Bomberman, Mario 64 and F-Zero. All run great, and being as I didn't have a 64, I guess that'll be the console I frequent the most.

I also picked up Super Mario 64 and have to agree that it doesn't seem quite as sharp as the original. I've been using the standard GameCube pad. Also downloaded Bomberman 93 and Zelda. I can't wait till they release more games -- dying to play Blaster Master, Rescue Rangers, Ducktales, Rush 'n Attack, Super Contra, etc.

If I had Mario 64 right now I wouldn't have a reason to play any other game. I fucking loved that game.

Is Bomberman 93 the same as Mega Bomberman on Genesis? I get them all confused. Also, can you play Bomberman 93 4 player with 4 GC pads?

QFT. The only reason I don't have it on VC is because I've already got it on N64 and DS.

So how is it supposed to go with new releases? I think I remember hearing that there will be new ones added every week but I'm just not sure. People seem to have info on upcoming Xbox Live games so getting info like that will build the anticipation.

I think it's every monday a handful of new titles.

There is zero chance you'll be playing Rescue Rangers or Duck Tales. Capcom doesn't have the Disney licenses anymore. :cry:

So far I haven't bought anything because everything I would buy I all ready own. I would love to see something like terranigma show up on VC. Till something shows up that I don't own I have no plans on buying anything, that is unless stuff gets updated, like if we saw the BS-X remake of the first Zelda show up as an update for NES Zelda. Or if they brought Dracula X Rondo of Blood to it. You know give me something I don't have yet.

I was playing Solomon's Key while my brother was watching and i asked him, "You know what game NEEDS to be on Virtual Console?"
He took one look and said, "Lolo. Why aren't you playing Lolo now?"
Solomon's Key is the one NES game that's worth the 5 bucks. Lots of levels, and it's rilly rilly hard. Remember up+a+b on the Game Over screen will save you from having a stroke.

Everyone hates Pinball for being so simple, but i love it. It's just good stupid fun. I can pull it up when i don't feel like playing anything else and try for a new high score.

Wario's Woods is awesome fun, though the SNES version is supposed to be much better. Hopefully we'll get that as well.

Mario Bros. is... Mario Bros. I like how difficult it is and the fact that you have to learn the physics. It's very different than the Mario Bros. on the Super Mario Advance titles. It's also not the same as the arcade version. ):

Donkey Kong needs the pie factory. PLS. If there's one update at all for any one game, it NEEDS TO BE THE PIE FACTORY FOR DONKEY KONG.
also, Donkey Kong III wanted.

Mario 64 looks much better for me. The vaseline-vision is removed. The z button placement is my only issue.

I've been playing Bonk as well. I looked forward to it for so long. It's just not that good. I don't dislike it as much as any of the Sonics, but it doesn't even touch the lamest Kirby. It's fun and all, the level design isn't very good and the controls don't feel right.

Oh, another classic game they've gotta hook up with online multiplayer -- Tetris.
And it's odd that they launched VC without hooking us up with Super Mario Bros. , Kid Icarus, Metroid and Excitebike. Hopefully the light gun will launch by Christmas so I can play Hogan's Alley and Duck Hunt again.

So are there for certain no video filters running on the games? If so, that would be fantastic--I can't stand all the arcade compilations for PS2, etc. that muddy the visuals with blurry filters. Who likes that!?

Also, I thought Gunstar Heroes was supposed to be out at launch--I think even Nintendo's site says so. Too bad :(

You can buy points with a credit card through the Wii Shop channel. Unfortunately, you still have to buy them in certain increments--you can't just say, "Bomberman costs 600 points so I'll buy 600 points." On the bright side, I think they come in sets as small as 500 points (I bought 1000 to get Mario 64 and have nothing left over).

I got Mario Bros. and Bonks. Bonks is hard as fuck. I hope they implement online play in these games eventually. Waiting for Mario RPG to come to Virtual Console. Let's hope for some nice new games this Mon.

Apparently the games are not filtered, not scaled 2x, but actually running in the true original resolution (save N64). Pretty impressive.

That's awesome to hear the games don't have that ugly filtering. That's my mosted hate thing about compilations.

Nintendo needs to get their old arcade games on this thing but for some reason they like denying that part of their history.

I don't have much interest in the VC but I am waiting for SuperScope games to come to it as I hate the bulkiness of the bazooka.

Nope, I always found the best looking comination to be Advance Mame2x with point filtering. Care to educate teh noob?

Mark: I didn't think that the Wii can display the native resolution of the older systems, but it doesn't look like it's being filtered. If you have played the Gamecube zelda promo discs, the emulation is identical.

Not counting the Light Gun games, these two games should definitely come to the Virtual Console.

Pac-Man Vs. 2 - The original was a surprisingly fun game, and a sequel would definitely fit into the VC realm. You would need one Nintendo DS for the Pac-Man player and 3 Wiimotes for the ghosts, and switching controllers won't be a hassle since everything is wireless (an option for 4 DSes so there would be no need to switch controllers would also be nice).

On top of the 6 original maps, provide more maps from Ms. Pac-Man and Jr. Pac-Man, and throw in a Construction mode so that players can create their own levels (and maybe even allow trading levels between friends through Connect24). An online mode would also be cool. Sell it for $10 and you have a title that actually makes the VC worthwhile.

Chu Chu Rocket Wii - I've been begging for this game to appear on XBLA, but it would also work in the VC realm. You use the Wiimote to move the cursor around and the D-pad to place your arrow. Online play should be incorporated and allow players to trade their puzzle levels via Connect24. Sell it for $10.

I swear, if these games come to the VC, I'll buy the Wii.

This is the best idea, and it needs to happen immediately. I completely forgot about how awesome Pac-Man Vs. is. It's too bad it was packed in with a bunch of throwaway games and required an accessory a lot of people never bothered with, because it was one of the most fun multiplayer games on GC. Using a DS (or 4 of them) would already make this game accessable to more people than the first was. Hell, I'd even buy a retail version at a budget price.

Yoshi's Safari felt like total hack crap and Tin Star was only mildly entertaining.

I never had one. My mom wouldn't let me because I got too excited and rowdy whenever I played my friends'. I had to play it at my friends house and break their fine china instead.

When I got a SNES for christmas, I got the Super Scope Six bundle, not the Mario World one, or whatever else was out at the time.

Good grief. At this rate, we'll probably get SMB 3 a year from now. Here's hoping something as promising as VC doesn't become painfully stagnant thanks to Nintendo dragging its heels. Bump that emu team into high gear and dump the goods!

BTW I got 4,000 wii points for 30 bucks at Circuit City.

Sucks that there isn't a large variety of gaming content to spend it on though.

There was an arcade punch out way before Tysons Punch Out and after Tyson went retarded they took him out of the NES game and had it renamed to just Punch Out iirc.

As a person who owns Super Star Soldier on Hucard, I highly recommend it. One of the best shooter series ever. Great weapon system (especially the giant blue ring lazer), really long stages and big bosses.

SSS is the best vertical shooter series ever. I don't know what the hell is the matter with you people who never owned the NEC systems. If you bought an N64 and never had a Duo, you should be shot.

Duo's are a lot more money than an N64. Almost all the duo games worth playing were also left in Japan which meant paying import prices. Since I have the System Card 3.0 one of these days I will buy the CD add on for my Turbo Grafix 16 and on it I will play my burned copy of Drac X that I used to play on Magic engine, because I refuse to pay 150 - 200 dollars for the fucking game. All though it would be a lot nicer if these games just came to XBLA or VC and then I wouldn't have to buy a cd add-on for my turbo.

I will buy Super Star Soldier when it becomes available on VC since I don't have that hucard.

When the N64 was released, it was the same price as a Duo, and import prices were much less than cartridge prices. I'm not talking about 2006 prices.

I barely knew what "import" meant at that point.

If you have a modded Xbox, you can play Dracula X, even without the CD. I finally understood why Yoshi kept raving about the game after I played it.

No modded xbox here. Yeah the game is really good like I said back in the day I had magic engine on Windows 98 and used to play it on that. I'd like to find magic engine again for XP since I now have a home thearter PC I put together, but I'm not paying for it.

Mod your Xbox. It takes half an hour and doesn't require any disassembly whatsoever.

I did have a software modded Xbox at one point. If I ever decide to mod my Xbox again it'll be a hardware mod, I'm just not a fan now of the software one.

I nabbed Sonic 1 to try out the Genesis emulation, and it's great also. It looks better than my CDX hooked up through composite, the colors are nice and vibrant. Sound is 95% there, music is good but digital sound effects are slightly off in some places. Not worse (some of the samples are higher quality) but just different, like they re-encoded some of the digital sounds at a higher bitrate.

Super Star Soldier....I never got that on TG16. Me want.

any time we had a power outage, since the Xbox doesn't have any kind of battery to remember the time past a few minutes after it's unplugged, the Xbox date and time thing would try and load and wouldn't load the mod software, and it was always a bitch trying to get it past that. Maybe they've improved that since but I don't know it annoyed the hell out of me and I just stuck with roms and other things on my PC, and now that I built a home theater PC, there's nothing a modded Xbox can do that it can't.

That was the Turbografx package me and my brother got back in May '93. We saved our allowances for months. I'd wanted the system for a long time just for Air Zonk alone and even more after seeing a two page review on Bonk's Revenge in SwatPro. So when I heard they'd dropped the TG-16 to $50 at Waldensoftware, I had to have it. It was our third system after our SMS and NES.

The pack we bought was in an old style TG-16 box with the orange and black font. But it had a sticker/wrapping covering it with a picture of Zonk next to a monitor with Keith Courage. The system not only came with with Keith Courage, but a boxed copy of Ordyne! Great deal for just $50.

Then a month later we got Air Zonk, then in August '93 Bonk 3 was released. Good times. And as I said in another thread, the Bonk/Zonk series IMHO had some of the best wacky/'toon character designs and animations before Earthworm Jim.

One year later, Waldensoftware was already selling off their new Duos in anticipation of TTI's coming demise. Me and my brother pooled our allowances again and with help from our dad got a brand new Turbo Duo with all the pack in games for just $99! Gate of Thunder made my jaw drop.

Super Star Soldier is up on VC as of now.

In other news, Nintendo apparently updates VC at bizarre times. Why right now, as opposed to midnight or something?

Man I may have to get SS just for the music alone.
