You know, I dont own a Wii, I dont plan on getting one any time soon, but I just have to say this one thing...
I cant believe that Joust cares this much about the Wii failing. It reminds me of when I was 14, and I bought a Super NES for Street Fighter 2. Up until that point, my friends and I were Sega guys. And my friend, Eric, spent so much time trying to get me not to buy the Super NES because he hated Nintendo so much. It almost came to the point where he was going to stop being my friend because I was going to buy it. It was really sad, and just a little pathetic.
Devil's Crush is absolutely awesome, but I believe that pinball title belongs to Metroid Prime Pinball.
I have to agree with Joust that Nintendo is charging way too much for their VC titles. Had Nintendo gone with $2 for NES, $4 for SNES (Genesis and TG-16), and $6 for N64, the issue of price for these barebone ROMs probably wouldn't be as strong.
I'm guessing that's the Euro list. SimCity and a bunch of those NES games are already out here and Super Probector is Europe's Contra 3. Y'know, violence is bad, so turn everybody into robots. Yay.
...but I'd love to see SCIV and C3 here before the end of the year.
If you're playing a TG-16 game with the remote instead of a GC or Classic Controller, the A and B buttons serve as the turbo buttons. Def. not practical, but figured I'd share.
Also, I know the debate about will or won't the games have enhancements, I was reading one of the magazines I got free subs to (EGM, GI, whatever) and they had an interview, and their excuse was "we want to give them the original experience, so there will be no changes to any of the games."
I already have the original experience on my Xbox, for free,
Way to suck there, Nintendo.
Why must Nintendo always rape people with their prices for classic shit. Remember the $20 classic series on GBA? $20 for Zelda 1, Fuck you!
I'm still going to feed the beast and buy Contra 3 and Super Castlevania though. EVIL BASTARDS!
YOu forgot to factor in the bullshit required to put in a decent sized HD, hook it up and get it running, + the time needed to scour the web to get a WORKING rom that supports sounds. The xbox controller also sucks ass for Roms. Not to mention getting a decent stick for roms isn't very easy either. (Not that finding a classic controller for Wii is different).
But I agree. $5 for NES games, and $8 for Genesis/SNES is overpriced. $6 to TG=16 games doesn't seem bad, especially when they add games that were originally on CD rom.
Nobody has considered these things with VC/marketplace:
What if it's suddenly 10 years from now, and you want to play these games. Wii/360 isn't current gen, so Nintendo/Microsoft don't give a shit and don't support them. You filled your HD/system with downloads that got wiped out.
Same scenario above, but let's say, for the sake of arguement, Zenith owns the videogame industry 10 years from now and Microsoft/Nintendo are out of business.
I guess I'm an old fashioned guy that likes hard copies of things.
It doesn't have to be cheaper than stealing. It just has to be cheaper than what it's priced at right now.
Melf is saying for the price Nintendo is currently charging, they should add some extras that make the VC games worthwhile. Otherwise, it's better to play the exact same thing, for free, elsewhere.
My point wasn't that you should be happy, it was that things won't change until people stop paying top dollar for VC roms.
Many of the people bitching the loudest about the VC seem to also be buying games on it. I'm not buying a VC game until it's either A) enhanced or B) a game I don't already own and never conceivably will own. In a few weeks I'll have a 360 and a huge back catalog of Xbox/Xbox360 games to fill in; I'd rather spend $20 on a hard copy of a recent new game. Learn to speak with your wallet.
Or $250 for $90 Wii's.
Oh boo hoo. I think it's real enough to say that this is the reality of ROMs in our world, whether you like it or not. Being all holier-than-thou doesn't change the situation. People can get these games for free already and play them in component video on their TV without using the VC.
And there are plenty of people who won't do that. Yes here at TNL everyone and their fucking mother downloads all the roms they want and plays them on their tv through an Xbox or HTPC, but there is a large portion of the populace that won't do that. That doesn't know about modding an Xbox or want to deal with modding an Xbox, that is willing to pay money to be able to do so. You are not their market, the average person is. I'm willing to bet that the number of people who aren't willing to mod an Xbox and are more willing to pay for legal roms to play on their Wii is large enough that it will make what ever companies support it money. At the end of the day that's all they or any other company cares about.
You're right. There are plenty of the unwashed masses that are either too stupid and/or too lazy to mess with Roms and I'm one of them.
I haven't messed with Romz since ~1998, but I'm willing to bet you they are as big of a pain in the ass to get running now as they were then.
I'm sure most those people don't feel like their being fucked out of their money. It's pretty fucking easy to build your own PC and install windows, and yet Dell continues to sell PCs. It's called some people just don't want to be bothered and would rather pay money to have some one else do the work.
All the SF games have been online for free for years, and yet an assload of people ponied up 10 bucks to do so on XBLA.
The point I was making was that they did include online play and leaderboards can be done easily on a forum. I'll give you achievements but they really don't mean shit to me nor do I feel they're worth 10 bucks.
You don't need technical engineering experience on hundreds of dollars worth of electronics to build a PC. If you can figure out that kids game where you put the square peg into the square hole, you can build a PC.
God, let's go over the same god damn subject every three days. Hey guys! YOU CAN GET IT ALL FOR FREE ON THE INTERNETS
Oh, but Finch, I want it legally! I'll buy it on the Wii VC...
...oh, you say it's expensive? Really? Oh! Some of these titles are available cheaper on multi-game collections on other consoles...
But... isn't it all free on the internets?
[/full circle]
This argument is senseless and a waste of time. It's like arguing that buying CD's or mp3's is stupid in the music thread because you can just download whatever you want illegally. The bottom line is that tons of people don't want to bother with the hassle of illegal roms and/or enjoy paying for what they consume.
If you want enhancements on VC games then stop buying unenhanced VC games.
Actually it's arguing that I like buying CDs for $9.99 and not $17.99 like you'd find at a specialist store.
No one is saying that VC games should be free, but if these things are going to be $5-10, we need to see effort put into it other than Nintendo running an emulator and ROM on your TV.
No, it's not. The argument people are making is "Why should I pay $5-10 for what I can get for free?" There is no download service that offers Mario 64 legally for cheaper than $10, and the same goes for most of the other VC games.
Then "we" need to stop paying $5-10 for roms and emulators. It's silly to cry about the poor service "we" are getting as "we" keep paying for it.
Hey. Someone tell me what's out today so i don't have to go to neogaf.
Gunstar Heroes, Alien Crush, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and Ice Hockey.
Woooo Ice Hockey!
Ice Hockey
Gunstar Heroes
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Alien Crush
Woo Ice Hockey!
Gunstar Heroes for sure. I love me some Puyo, but at this point, that's one of the least exciting versions, especially with it being the Americanized version.
I'm kind of surprised Alien Crush made it on since it was a Naxat game in Japan, and I figured the rights to their games might have been lost. It's an awesome game. Anyone who missed out on it before should check it out.
I'll get Gunstar Heroes, mainly since every time I tried to emulate it, I've had graphical issues with it.
Strange, but true.
To you genius engineers/programmers:
Is it as fucking hard as I think it is to implement online content in a game that wasn't originally on it? Or is it a matter of just writing a few lines of code?
If by "online content" you mean just multiplayer it wouldn't be that hard. The best way to do that AFAIK would be to build it into the emulator itself and basically give it the ability to swap second player input with an online connection. It would take a good amount of work at first, especially with however they choose to have the server (I'm guessing have each console become its own server and have it selectable to send out a signal which can be accepted by another player, similar to how XBL handles it), but if it's done like that then nothing should have to be altered to any of the games and everything immediately becomes online capable.
Of course, the PC emulators I used never had perfect netcode so maybe there's something I don't know about. Or they just did a shitty job.
You can fairly easily program an emulator that can change input from controller port 2 to an IP address. You can also get more complicated than that and program for latency prediction and such.
Regardless, Xbox Live seems to be doing it without a problem, so it's just Nintendo being lazy. No one would mind if they took two weeks off from releasing four games a week to just release Super Mario Kart online.
I bought the Alien Crush JP HuCard plus case, used, for $5 three years ago.
GG me.
I tried logging into Shop channel (at 11:30am) and it just sat there. Looks like everybody's trying to get in at once. Oddly enough, I couldn't turn off the Wii with the remote or the power button.
"Then "we" need to stop paying $5-10 for roms and emulators. It's silly to cry about the poor service "we" are getting as "we" keep paying for it."
How about stop bending over for Nintendo and realize you're getting scammed every time you buy a VC game? This is my point about Nintendo being bad for the games industry. Yeah, *I'm* not going to buy one of the craps (250 dollars for a MAYBE 100 dollar system? lolz), but someone's going to. And if the other companies follow suit and just fart out some ROMs because they can, I lose.
I dunno. It was just an absurd comment. He knows he's taking it up the butt, but he's happy to oblige. It's just weird.
When you're right, you're right.
I think some/most of the VC is bullshit, but I don't complain.
Everyone except maybe one person here knows and understands that VC right now is an unmitigated ripoff. It's possibly acceptable if you absolutely have to play a game RIGHT NOW and it happens to be in the still-shitty lineup. But just because I own a Wii doesn't mean I live in some fucked up fantasyland where I think VC is better than Live Arcade because I know it isn't. So there isn't any need to keep repeating the same thing because most of us ALREADY AGREE WITH YOU and the other few WILL NEVER AGREE WITH YOU.
It's fair to say that XBLA's features (achievements, online play, etc) make its games far more valuable for us to download than VC's. But this can be said one time, and doesn't need to be repeated ten times for each game.
If I didn't know better, I'd think that some people know in their hearts that the 360 will ultimately sell far below the Wii and the PS3 will never, at any point, have as many consoles sold through as the Wii.
Good news is, judging by the DS/PSP and last time 'round, that the console war stuff should die off in about six months.
Well, it didn'thappen last month and it won't happen this month, so...
So the AU service got an awesome update this morning: Nothing.
GG.
Can we seriously ban this phrase? We get it, a couple of you think the Wii is a rip-off for the price. Obviously, 1 million other people so far don't seem to think so. Say it, get it out of our system, then shut up about it. There's no point in using every excuse you can find to bring up the same line over and over.
Every one of these consoles is overpriced, not just the Wii. Sony started it with the announcement of $600 and the others piled on. If Sony had priced competitively, even as high as $400 or $500, the 360 would probably be $300 and the Wii $150 right now.
If all I'm going to be offered are the same ROMs that have been on the web for free for years, then yes, Nintendo can go fuck itself.
I for one, haven't bought anything VC-related and don't plan to if things stay as they are.Quote:
Then "we" need to stop paying $5-10 for roms and emulators. It's silly to cry about the poor service "we" are getting as "we" keep paying for it.
This is it in a nutshell. Give me a reason to get excited about VC and I will. As it is, it does nothing that GameTap doesn't do better, and the prices are outrageous.
Because different companies have different business models. It isn't like Nintendo is making 150 bucks on every wii, from what analysts have said they're probably making 10 - 20 bucks on each Wii. Much like they did with the GC. That's purely from a manufacturing stand point though and doesn't take into account RnD, which obviously they did an assload of in developing the new controller. Who cares if they do something different anyway, you don't like it then don't buy it. I for one would be very pissed off if every console this generation cost 400 - 600 bucks. I enjoy video games but not for that much money. Who knows maybe a lot of people agree with me maybe a lot don't we won't know for another year or so. Besides the fact that as others have stated in other threads they shouldn't be held to the same "standards" because they are a very different company. Microsoft has many different divisions, so that if the 360 isn't making them any kind of profit , it's ok because they have other divisions that are bringing in profits. Same with Sony, Videogames isn't the only thing Sony does, they have their movies, they have their electronics department, all kinds of other shit. Nintendo on the other hand ONLY does video games. The Wii has to be profitable in someway shape or form right out the gate. I highly doubt you'd be seeing a 500 - 600 dollar PS3 if the only thing Sony did was video games. Nor would you be seeing the same 360 you're seeing if MS was only a video game company. Shit just thinking about that there's also the goals of the companies, MS and Sony are looking to take over your home entertainment area. They want their systems to be what you do everything on, watch movies, play games, listen to music, they want it all done on their boxes. It's the whole convergence thing, you take blu-ray out of the PS3 and the system would probably be in the 300 - 500 dollar range easily. I don't need my Video game system to play HD movies, and BluRay is a waste for games right now, so why is Sony not giving me a choice. I'd love for the PS3 and 360 were more video game focused and less Multi media focused. Personally I wish the other companies were held to Nintendo's "standards". How many revisions of the PS2 were they're before they went to the Slim Line model, a good 10 or more. Because Sony decided to work some bugs out after the system shipped as opposed to before. Look at all the problems people had with the PS, PS2, PSP, and hell even the launch 360s. Why aren't they held to the same standards of hardware quality control that Nintendo is? Every company has different things they focus on, there really is no need for all 3 to be exactly the same, the video game industry is large enough to support some systems taking a different path. I mean really some of you act like Nintendo is stealing money from your wallet, get over yourselves and get the sand out of your vagina's already.
"Personally I wish the other companies were held to Nintendo's "standards". "
LAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWL
Actually, that's a good point. I'd like to see every game that got made get a 9 or 10 because it did everything another game did 10 years ago and nothing more. On seconds thought, if every dev did that, games would be sucky ;( Thank god for other companies.
Reading that was really a strain, paragraphs are your friend. Great their business model is differen't than the others, it still sucks. And most of that was just ranting and raving that didn't have anything to do with what I said. Nintendo was still a game only company back when they made every other system. And you got your moneys worth on all of those tech wise. That's why the arguement doesn't work.
This makes Sony and M$ seem desperate. How many other industries are there where companies sell things at a loss just to get a foot in the door? I can't think of any.Quote:

Now that I think of it, Razors and Printers follow the same model, so it's more common than I thought. It still seems desperate.
Somewhat OT, Don't stores only make like $5-8 per new release game (non used) title sold? I can't imagine the publisher makes much either.
M$ is a cardable offense. We're not 12 guys.
Agreed, that isn't even close to apples to apples there.Quote:

Be happy there are periods involved, you give people an inch they want a fucking mile. Seriously tnl is filled with some of the sandiest vagina's I think I've ever run into.
No see it doesn't suck for them since they are the number 1 or 2 video game publisher profit wise every year.Quote:

So obviously they are doing ssome thing right.
None of their systems have been the most powerful system of it's generation.
That wasn't the case with the NES, nor the SNES, nor the N64, it's debatable with the GC, wasn't the case with the DS, hell there were some hand helds more powerful than the GB, and GBC at times.
Yes the argument does work, you are getting your moneys worth, the CPU, and GPU are NEW OH MY FUCKING GOD HE DIDN"T JUST SAY THAT!!!!!!
Get over it, they're new, they aren't as fancy as the 360 or PS3 chips but they're still new chips with new tech.
They're an assload smaller than the PS3 and 360 chips and guess what saturn boy shrinking technology is just as expensive as making it faster.
So getting the level of processing power you are at the size it is at is new technology that costs money and you are getting your money's worth.
Then you also have the new controller technology, you do realize R$Ding that costs money, you are getting more than your money's worth in that technology.
Lots of paragraphs for you so enjoy.
OMG WITH OUT PARAGRAPHS I CAN"T READ!!!!
Ho avuto sesso con la vostra madre per soldi.
Publishers make the largest cut of the pie. I do believe it's around 50% give or take depending on the publisher, developer and the deal.
Getting indignant and complaing over the fact your post is hard to read takes a lot more work than clicking the edit button and hitting enter a few times here and there. And you act like a hate nintendo, I don't I just don't like what they have been doing this generation.Quote:

What are you talking about? The snes in many respects was stronger than the genesis and turbo. As was the 64 over the psx and saturn, and the cube was fine too. Now you are just trying to distort history.Quote:

Sony's losing money because of Blu-Ray DVD playback, not because of the video game capabilities. Sony and MS should be taking huge losses on the hardware, forcing smaller companies like Nintendo out of the market and benefiting gamers. Instead, the attitude is "if you charge $70 per game, don't worry, I'll bump 'em mine up to $70, too." If they're going to make it so easy, I hope other companies jump in.
If Microsoft ever did anything wrong, they redeemed themselves with Xbox. I've been a Mac user for the last six years and not even I can understand why anyone actively hates them. The fact that anyone still thinks "M$" is clever or cute astounds me.
Also, if you were waiting for VC to have games worth playing, any pinball fan who hasn't played Alien Crush should get on that. Feel free to whine about it for a couple of pages if you don't want to, though.
"They're an assload smaller than the PS3 and 360 chips and guess what saturn boy shrinking technology is just as expensive as making it faster"
So making the console tiny was worth the extra 150 dollars? Somehow I don't buy that. And no, die shrinking is not as expensive as making a faster chip. Furthermore, the SNES was far more powerful than the Genesis and the Wiimote didn't cost much $ in RnD because IT ISN'T NEW. It's two cheap accelerometers and a dinky IR sensor bar that takes a long time to setup. This is not a money sink.
Gunstar Heroes lives up to the hype.
Please believe.
I think this post is a new record for incorrect statements.
A) Source your die shrinking statement, because it's false. Bumping the clock speed on a processor is not more expensive than making it significantly smaller (with a few very rare exceptions). The Wii architecture is also a whole lot more power-efficient than the Cube hardware; measuring the cost that goes into developing hardware by clock speed alone is retarded.
B) The Genesis CPU was over 3 times faster than the SNES CPU, and Genesis came out 2 years earlier.
C) Nintendo has openly talked about the years it took them to get the latency down through R&D on the Wii remote; it would have come out in 2004 as a Cube peripheral were it not for all the R&D needed to make it work properly.
D) The "dinky IR sensor bar" is just 2 LED lights that the wiimote uses to triangulate it's position; it's not really sensing anything. You plug it into the back of the Wii and then place it on top of the television. How does that take a "long time to setup"? Are you disabled?
Spo, just stop. This is stupid.
Gunstar Heroes is 1002 tons of awesome...that is all
"Source your die shrinking statement, because it's false."
Are you trying to tell me that the development time to create the Cell (or even the X360's CPU) is less than the time it took to shrink the die on the GC CPU?
"The Genesis CPU was over 3 times faster than the SNES CPU, and Genesis came out 2 years earlier"
The Genesis couldn't do anything compared to the SNES.
"Nintendo has openly talked about the years it took them to get the latency down through R&D on the Wii remote; it would have come out in 2004 as a Cube peripheral were it not for all the R&D needed to make it work properly."
They're incompetent then. What latency? What function on the controller would take so long to go form controller to system? And LOL at the last part. It confirms what everyone keeps saying ;p
just to state it again the Wii CPU and GPU are not just the GC chips shrunk down, they're new chips, they're faster chips, and they're chips that are smaller than they should have been. creating energy efficient CPUs is costly, creating small died CPUs is expensive. Anyone saying otherwise is a complete retard who knows nothing about engineering, why do you think laptops cost more than desktops for the same power point, shrinking computer chips is a very costly deal. Any one still convinced that the Wii is just the GC made smaller needs to read the thread over on Beyond3d, and with that I'm done. It's the same stupid retarded arguments from the same trolls.
I don't think anyone understood me.
WOO ICE HOCKEY
I love Gunstar Heroes. Maybe my favorite Genesis game.
"why do you think laptops cost more than desktops for the same power point, shrinking computer chips is a very costly deal"
Comapring what's in the Wii to the 360 CPU or the Cell is like comparing a Pentium 4 to a small Cyrix 686. The Wii's chip is lightyears behind what's in the real next-gen systems.
Hey, isn't this thread about the Wii VC stuff? And didn't it say "please no hate"? I could have swore that was what we were doing here.
Woo Ice Hockey!
Well, last night I caved and bought Alien Crush. I'm a sucker for a good pinball game and I never had a TG-16, so getting TG-16 VC games doesn't feel like so much of a ripoff to me. It's really fun so far. The plunger animation is amazing for a home game from 1989.
I just remembered something; wasn't Devil's Crush the same game as Dragon's Fury on Genesis?
