NES edition of Donkey Kong sucks, but it's not the controls. The layout on the classic pad is fine, even changed for the better of a game or two (Pinball). Mario 64 controls poopily, and it really needs to be fixed, but that's it from what i've played. I haven't played anything that's even worth a button editor. NES games are perfect on the remote. Bonk and Alien Crush are too, dunno about the other TG16's or Genesis games.

If it's not worth your money, you still have the options of playing it on the original system or downloading a rom.
If you buy something on virtual console that you already own in working condition, it's your own doing. Is it worth it? It's up to the buyer, but bitching about $5 for a good NES game is pointless. It's $5. You can get it for free if you want. If you waste your money on something stupid like Soccer or Altered Beast, it's your own fault. $5 for something like Ice Hockey, regardless if i can DOWNLOAD IT FOR FREE ON THE INTERNETS or buy a $.25 cartridge that might work on an NES if i blow into it, doesn't make me cry. I'm paying for a game i want to play and that i'll get hours and hours of play out of. God love Galaga, but if i had to pay $5 for Galaga with a million improvements to $8 on F-Zero with none, i'd still pick F-Zero.
There's currently a lot of wasted potential, but there's nothing more devious than usual about it. $5 for Ice Hockey with online play would be better than without, but no one else is giving me that option. $3 for Ice Hockey would be great too. $2 would be great. $1 bundled with 50 other games would be great. Ice Hockey with a million different teams would be awesome, and maybe they could throw in some mini games and incorporate motion sensing and all that nonsense.

What's your beef with Mario 64 controls? I didn't get to play it much on 64, played through the entire game on DS, and after the DS the game feels like total amazatron on the Wii Classic Controller. Only problem is the L trigger--because of the travel (it's analog) I sometimes get jump-then-butt-stomp instead of long-jumps.

Got a nice surprise on Friday night when I saw the Gunstar update on the AU VC channel. I grabbed Columns for the wife (she's fucking amazing at that game - level 24 WTF) and jumped onto the UK VC channel to get Alien Crush, which really is great fun.

I'm happy to spend a few bucks on TG16 games that I've never played, and I'm looking forward to playing some of the SNES games I never got to play as a kid.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo won't be releasing import titles on the VC, at least not yet, as the Aussie VC only runs PAL games and we don't even get the option to download TG16 games because the system was never released here. So long as they leave the country-swap hole open, I'm happy.

Wait, do you just change the country in the Wii settings menu to get access to that country's downloads?

Yeah, I posted it a few pages back. Unfortunately you can only select countries that share Nintendo's 'regions' - PAL gets lumped together, then there's US and Asia as two other, separate regions. So while I can log into the UK VC list for TG16 games, I can't get any US or Asian releases, which blows (as NTSC only releases, such as almost all of Square's 16bit RPGs, won't be available to me).

I am also confused by this. I have nearly all of the stars and I've been playing it with Wavebird, and it's absolutely perfect. I've played the N64 version to death, not to mention the DS one, which was very much playable with the d-pad and buttons once you got used to it, despite what people said. I think the Wii release plays exactly like the N64 one. In fact, the GC controller seems better suited to it. It's far better than the N64 controller, easily. Never had trouble doing a thing.

The Genesis layouts for the classic controller sound kind of troublesome. Also, I wonder how layouts for the TG16 games, etc would be on it? I hate using B/A on DS for GBA games, and I would much rather use Y and B. I had the same problem on Super Game Boy, and I'll have the same problem again if they force you to use a crappy layout.

Not adding scoreboards, etc is one thing. Giving us different controller layouts and not giving us a way to change it is quite another, and it's really not excusable. If it turns out to be a legitimate issue, they need to fix it.

God, no. That game made me ill. Getting used to that would be comparable to getting used to mukade centipedes crawling in your bed and biting you every night.
Controlling the camera's odd and there's this strange not-quite-right sensation i get from the analog stick. Like, Mario will run around in a little circle when you try to turn, not quite turning on a dime. Maybe it's the classic controller, maybe it was always like that, but i know i've read other complaints about it. It doesn't matter. I hate Mario64. I don't know why i keep coming back to it. I was playing it earlier tonight and not hating it too much, so maybe my memory of the problems was exaggerated. I vaguely remember throwing up it hurt so bad, but maybe that didn't really happen.

Oh yeah, it's awful misery, especially in Sinking Sands Land. A few people have told me that it works well if you use the d-pad, but I stuck with the touchscreen controls 'cause it gives you better camera control. And 'cause Mario 64 without analog is stupid.

I can't be totally certain, but I have a feeling it would've been a lot better had the analog centerpoint not dragged around with your thumb. So many times my thumb would drift and tug the analog centerpoint halfway off the screen--ugh! Just thinking about it now is making me angry.

I understand why Nintendo released Mario 64 on DS (to sell systems) but imagine how cool it'd be if we got the updated DS version of Mario 64 as a VC game instead? That's what I hope the future of the VC is like.

I remember years ago before Advance Wars came out, people use to praise military madness. It used to go for big money on ebay too. If I was still into Strat games, I might bite.

Did it have a password or a save feature? I know VC has a suspend if you hit home, but that doesn't help you if you want to re-load a save point. Come to think of it, no other VC games have a save feature besides the home suspend.

Games only have their original save systems, and/or the suspend play feature.

I'm really happy with the suspend play feature, though. Doesn't spoil the challenge of the original game at all while letting you come back to games later even if they originally didn't support saving. (For those that haven't played the Virtual Console, the suspend feature works like a quick save in Aria / Dawn of Sorrow--the game creates a save state when you turn it off and it's automatically reloaded when you turn the game back on. However, the savestate is also deleted upon reloading, so you can't reload it to make up for mistakes.)

You think droppers are bad in something like a fighter game or deathmatch FPS, imagine sinking 30+ minutes into a strategy game match and having people cut out when you're about to play your winning move. Don't forget that you'd actually have to wait for them to think out allll their moves, too.

I like the concept of online strat games in theory, but in execution... I just don't think it'd work that well.

It's great on the classic controller also once you remap the buttons in game. It's just that if Sega hadn't put the ability to remap in the original game, it would be fucked on the classic controller. I worry about this in games that don't allow you to remap, although I can't really think of any old genesis games that it would really be a problem in since most of them allowed for remapping.

I just wanted to second this. One of my friends downloaded BMan '93, Super Star Soldier and Bonk. Last week while visiting him, I gave them all a thorough try out. The remote felt great for all three and was nice 'n comfy even during our frantic Bomberman matches. The only thing that feels a bit wonky with the Wiimote and Turbo games is the turbo fire switch is set to the B trigger (which does come in handy sometimes in Bonk when you want to scale cliffs quicker with the bite, ect). Other than that though, as a long time TG-16 owner I didn't miss my old pad at all when I played them.

I like using the b trigger as the turbo. It feels right. Never owned a TG16 though.

Is that turbo function something that was in the original TurboGrafx games? I feel cheap for using it--since it's like an auto-fire--but if it was in the original games then I'll stop the self loathing.

I found a Classic Controller and picked it up tonight. I'm not sure if I'll keep it or Ebay it though; I really like it, but so far I don't have any games that benefit from it over the wiimote or a Wavebird. Anyone DL Military Madness yet? Is it worth the $6?

Yes, it was in TG-16 games originally and no it's not a cop out since (as you know by now) you sometimes have to really pound the attack button when climbing or spinning over certain gaps (unlike Bonk's sequels which balanced the moves out more) unless you flip the switch for a quick boost. Of course, you can use the switch to cheat at some of the bonus games but whatever. :D

Bonk flies with the turbo. Not cheap, necessary.

On the Hudson forums there are a couple complaints of "severe" graphical gltiches and music stuttering when scrolling maps in Military Madness.

Has anyone had these problems? I don't want to waste money on it if it's a bad emulation.

You can excuse them only releasing games in regions for which they were originally rated and licensed, but leaving them at PAL 50Hz is stupid. A PAL game can be run easily at 60Hz. You can do it by adding a switch to your SNES.

Nice addition. Despite the occasional flicker and slowdown, TG-16 R-TYPE was an amazing arcade port.

Now if only Nintendo would figure out a way to download VC titles into the DS or Irem would release an R-TYPE collection for PSP (with III and Leo please). Otherwise, Hucard R-TYPE on my TurboExpress is still the #1 way to blast Bydo on the go. :)

I bought the HuCard a couple years ago but have barely played it because the TurboGrafx got buried in a closet when we moved. I always think about digging it out, but I only have about four games so it's not worth it.

The TG-16 version has all 8 stages right? If so I'll definitely buy the VC download.

Yup, all 8 stages. It even has an extra boss since in the arcade game there was no boss for stage 6.

Anyway, I'm curious about something, regarding VC and international differences. Did Japan get R-Type as one PCE game, or two? Because if R-Type was released as a single download, it's time to raise hell. If PAL is getting shitty versions of games, and all English territories are barred from Japanese releases they didn't get initially, Japan should not be getting enhanced releases either.

We played that game until we beat it on the hardest difficulty and got the garbled congratulatory message. It was rad; much better than the shitty arcade Gradius 3.

That's because the SNES version of R-Type is crap with brutal slowdown everywhere.

SNES Gradius 3 also had brutal slowdown in a lot of places. It was still fun as shit.

ProTip: Exit with the home button and it'll keep your scores forever. It's just doing what the real game did if you turn it off.

Don't ever use the reset function. It erases your scores because they are stored in memory. I learned that the hard way with Super Star Soldier.

Also always exit the game using the Home->Wii Menu method and you should be fine.

Thats a game that we would regularly try to give away whenever someone bought a NES game because it's so damned common.

It's aggravating but the price hike might have been inevitible since Hudson no doubt eagerly took note that Turbo titles were outselling the current NES lineup.

Agreed that Nintendo needs to make the lineup more diverse. They need to stop being stubborn and allow those who want to import VC titles if they choose (as others have said "Nintendo apparently hates easy money"), or at least throw us a bone, so random example: why not compliment it by also offering the original 8-bit Lost Levels? Is it really too much to ask to have someone make a quick U.S. version of an old Fami rom which requires very little if any localization?

At this point, the success of VC is in the hands of someone at either NOJ or NOA. Right now they are being downright lazy with it and completely ignoring its potential.

I never had a problem with his opinion. He's right. R-TYPE can be a frustrating pain sometimes. But it's still fun and evolved shooters into new territory.

And Gradius requires a decent amount of memorization too. Just that unlike the latter, it allows players to learn quicker from their mistakes.

Grave: In Japan, R-Type was split into 2 hucards because the memory chips were so high. Part one had the first 4 stages, then gave you a code when you beat it. Then you popped in part 2 and punched in the code so that you could keep all your powerups. It was pretty gay. The US version had everything on a single hucard, but that was why it was like 20 or 30 bucks more than the other hucards back in the day.

I've had Rtype as long as I have had my TurboDuo, and I didn't even know the US version was the full game until last year. I had been playing the Japanese rom (I have the US hucard, but only the jap rom, go figure) and I got good enough to beat the fourth stage, which I had never done before. When I hit the road, I took my Turboexpress and popped in the game, got past the fourth stage again, and layed back to relax after a job well done. But the game went on to stage 5 and I died. Argh. :bang:

Yeah, I only have the Japanese version, I got both hucards with my PCE. Like I said, I'm just going to be pissed if the Japanese version for VC got fixed when the PAL users can't even get proper updates to games that should have never been the way they are to begin with. Plus, charging $8 for the US one? Is that because of... the price it cost then? Wow, the accuracy is unbelievable!

As much as I love playing Alien Crush and Gunstar Heroes on Wii, yeah, this crap is getting harder to defend. Where is Super Mario World? Or All Stars, dare I even ask for it? Any N64 games? I don't understand why they're holding out when the library we have right now is so meager. I know it's beating a dead horse, but this shit just doesn't make sense. And they were so quick to shoot down the notion of a Christmas gift, which would have gone a long way toward convincing people that VC isn't entirely evil.

I just spent five hours playing Bomberman '93 with some friends. Christ, that game is so addicting. It's the best multi-player game on the Wii at the moment.

Nintendo needs to figure out some kind of way to let you travel with VC game on SD card. The only thing that prevented me from buying Bomberman is that I live in a tiny apartment, and I can't take it to where I usually play with my friends. And they don't have wireless and haven't even taken their Wii online yet. :(

A bunch of them are games that are great without online play, but they have that anyway. I've been playing VC Wars, Balloon Battle, and Mario Kart VC against kids in Japan all night. I'm number 10 in the world on Balloon battle. How do i know that, HMM?
