And that's the problem. I approached Red Steel with two things in consideration. The first is the Wii's targeted demographic, casual gamers and people who don't really play games. The second is how Red Steel is portrayed in its ads/commercials --- intuitive, easy to get into, multi-player fun for even those who don't really play games.

With that in mind, if I invite over a group of friends who don't really play video games, especially FPSes, and they can't get used to the controls fairly quickly, they're going to tell me to pop in something else. It's not a big deal for those who game a lot and take the time to learn the controls. But for those who buy a Wii to get away from the "complex" or "difficult" controls of conventional gaming, and are interested in Red Steel from the ads, adjusting to a steep learning curve is a big turnoff.

Nintendo has said time and time again that they will try to cater both the casual and the hardcore. Why are people still bringing this up?

Did we see the same ads. The ads make fun of Red Steel having a large learning curve. Multiplayer is never even brought up.

Honestly I think the reason why the game has a such a steep learning curve for us, is becuase we play dual analog FPS controls all the time. I wonder how well it would be for the people who never touch them. maybe it will work, maybe it won't.

What would Ninendo gain by ditching a market comopletely for another? As yoshi already said the wii needs to sell more as a second console to 360 and PS3 owners than it does new people. Therefore they will need to continue to make the "hardcore" games if they want or not.

When it all comes down to it, look at the Wii most anticipated games. A Mario Platformer, Metroid Prime and Fire Emblem. I mean come on.

OK, so where are the hardcore games then? You just named a bunch of series that keep getting suckier.

That's the ad that being used on television. Your ad i remember was revealed about a month before the wii launch, when ubi started showing off the multiplayer in red steel publicly. I don't think it's ever been shown on T.V.

I addressed this in my last post but I'll boil it down again.

1. Mass market is the bread and butter, the hardCORE market is not as big as we'd think.
2. The hardCORE market buys everything anyway. How many sales will actually be lost? Not that many, just a lot of complaining on the internets.

Furthermore I don't think they are ditching the hardCORE. Pixar doesn't set out to make children's movies, they just set out to make good movies that everyone can enjoy. The fact there are no guns or sex in them doesn't seem to hurt them at the box office either. I don't even know what poeple mean when they say Nintendo is "ditching" a market. They aren't making thier games any different than they always have, so what is the evidence that they are actively trying to alienate people?
