Apparently Nintendo makes $37 profit on each Wii (not including controller, video cable, power supply, sensor bar, R&D costs, packaging, labor, shipping, or marketing). In the end they probably make closer to $5 on just the actual production and shipping of the product, which would fall in line with their original Cube model.
Interesting that the disc drive is so expensive; it is very small and quiet, and most disc drives don't slot load two very different sizes of disc and auto-center them.
What's that $406.65 PS3 number mean?
That's the loss Sony eats on each PS3 sold in Japan on manufacturing alone (not including the Sixaxis, etc).
Edit: reading more; apparently Nintendo was planning on selling Wii at $199 but was off on their estimate of how much the new GPU and manufacturing the die-shrunk chipsets cost. Rather than take a small loss on each system they packed in some demos (Wii Sports) and bumped the price to $250.
I still can't find concrete info on the cost of manufacturing the Wiimotes but apparently some random small Japanese peripheral manufacturer was quoted as saying they couldn't make a profit selling a third-party Wiimote at the same price as Nintendo. We know Nintendo had to delay the Wiimote GameCube peripheral for years because of R&D difficulties with the latency; my guess is that the actual manufacturing cost is $20 with a pretty crazy R&D tab to pick up.
I've been looking for one for my kids...seemingly tough to find, and I imagine it will remain that way through the holidays.
Wii posts biggest launch sales in Aussie history, and in four days surpassed the standing number of Aussie 360 sales.
