"It's 2006, built in wireless and backwards compatability should be the minimum standard."
Lawl what good is wireless if yoou can't do anything with it? And what if your network at home isn't wireless? YOU'RE SCREWED! Oh but no one wants HD, even though more people have HD sets than wireless networks...
"Just out of curiosity, why are we holding Nintendo solely responsible for lack of cables?"
Why should I blame Nyko for not making cales just so the system looks a little less like dog shit? No one cares about HD, remember?
Component cables make a big difference, even on a standard defintion TV.
Actually, the Wii's graphics are fine. No, they don't look 360-calibur good, but they're fine. Seriously, quit whining. The rest of the world is over it, why aren't you?
Also, how many people using cables that didn't come with the system use official Sony/MS/Nintendo ones?
James
my opinon of the wii in 7 words.
wish somewhere close had one for sale.
thank you, good night.
I actually used the standard composite cables to hook my Wii up to TrialSword's family's Philips big-ass HDTV. Although I thought it would look like total shit, it actually ended up really nice when stretched to wide screen. The whining really is out of proportion to the severity of the situation.
...but it still sure would've looked a vole-fucking lot better in component.
note to self, keep chao away from my pristine voles.
S-Video has been around even longer, dating back to the 80's with the commodore 64, all though that didn't use the standard 4 pin mini-din used today, it used an 8 pin din. Which I don't know what else used, but it was one of the first consumer devices to feature S-Video. The fact that 15 years ago right after the SNES launch I could get S-Video cables for the system and yet can't even get those right now for the Wii annoys the fuck out of me.
I mentioned it in one of the Wii threads don't know which one now so many have been closed, BUT Nintendo of America makes no fucking sense to me, they shipped the NES and SNES with both RF and Composite cables. They had S-Video available day one for the SNES, N64, and GC. Granted GC Component cables had to be bought online only, which was again an american only thing as Japan had them instores, but I will let that slide because of the expansive DAC chip needed in them, FINE. With the Wii not having anything available at launch just makes no fucking sense to me.
I did bitch about them too, and honestly I have no idea where they are or why they dropped the ball as well. I mean React was able to get their PS3 component cables out for launch, why not the Wii, there's no expensive proprietary chip this time, it's just regular pins and cables. I mean all of them fucked up React, Pelican, Blaze, Mad Catz, every last one of them. I mean shit Pelican's now wont be out till January or February. What the fuck is taking so long? It's not that hard to make cables, there's no short supply of 75ohm cables, or of little metal pins. I really want to know what's up with this. I even emailed Nintendo saying they had a great launch minus this problem and that it was pathetic they couldn't have the component cables out in stores at launch. All they replied with was that I could buy it online (which I mentioned in my original email) which I replied back to them bitching about that and how it should be in stores but never heard back from them.
see on my tv composite looks really asstastic, it's like the tv is sitting there going it's fucking composite I don't care lets blur the fuck out of it. Meanwhile everything else from S-Video and up is fucking gorgeous. I haven't touched Zelda in about 2 weeks because I want component cables first. I stopped at half way through the second dungeon and I'm just going to wait.
Very interesting, thanks again for the enlightenment/A/V history info.
One thing I don't quite understand is why don't video game companies just make the component out on their systems like the simple component out on the back of any standard DVD player? Does it cost more? Is it about space concerns when designing the system? Because it'd sure be nice if I could just use the same generic component cables I use on my DVD player on any given console as long as I didn't mind the minor inconvenience of having to swap cables.Quote:

While I wait 'till I can afford a Wii, me and my brother are currently playing though Metroid Prime Echoes on his new 52 inch LG plasma (stretched to widescreen both for the aesthetic and to protect the unit from initial burn in) We keep commenting on how surprisingly nice it looks in composite.
But remembering the potential of the TV still makes me wish one of us would have snagged some GC component cables long before their price became an ebay pariah.
Once they're released, I seriously refuse to play Prime 3 and especially Mario Galaxy unless I have some component cables. So I am gonna try my best to get them when I buy my system.
Just a heads up to AstroBlue - If you're planning on getting one on Thursday, Target has all games at $20 off, and the accessories at a significant saving as well.
You are welcome
I would say those 2 reasons are probably the main ones. Cost and Space, look at the back of the Wii there really isn't much room on the back of the system to fit, component, S-Video, Composite, and RCA Audio jacks. It could be done but it'd probably be a bitch to do. They would cost more but honestly the jacks are a minimal expense you're probably talking the difference between 50 cents for the multi-out compared to maybe a dollar or two at the most to have all those other Jacks. Plus it becomes another avenue of income for hardware manufacturers. Instead of you being able to go to monoprice.com and buy a new set of perfectly fine component cables for 6 dollars, you have to buy the Console Manufacturer branded ones for 30, or a 3rd party set.Quote:

It's annoying and it sucks, I think the only consoles to do that were the Turbo Grafix 16 (well at least the turbo booster had standard RCA A/V on the back) the 3D0 (which has S-video and composite on the back), and hmm the PS3 has an HDMI port on the back of it, but to get anything else out of the system you need a Multi-out, so it only semi counts.
You know man, I get your point: it is annoying that cables aren't readilly available in stores.
That said, if it is such a big issue for you you should have just ordered one online. That's what I did and I've had my cable for almost a week now. There comes a point where all your complaining crosses the fine line of Nintendo's failures into your own stubborn refusal to pay $5 for shipping.
Yes an extra $5 sucks, but if it is such a big issue perhaps it's worth it. It's not like the damn cable doesn't exist, and no one can get one. The cable is at Nintendo.com waiting to be bought, you just refuse to do so.
I'd rather be able to drive down to Hastings, Best Buy, EB, Target, etc and pick one up. Agree with Johnpv.
Shin John is the man, NOA lost their minds with this one
Day 1 available cables:
Gamecube Svideo > Wii composite
The could have at least added the extra little svideo connector onto the packed in composite cables. I know they want to suck more money out of the consumer, but this was just a terrible business decision
Component is definitely the only way to go these days and is pretty much a standard on all new tvs now.
Havent even opened zelda waiting for the cables to come in. Wii looks like total ass through composite on my tv
What?
This is all true. I expect some of these problems to be fixed in future though.
However, despite all that, I still think the Wii is worth owning. I've never had more fun playing games with my friends, save for possibly guitar hero. Like I said in the GoW thread, GoW is awesome, but Wii Bowling is as much fun.
Truth, especially since Nintendo's own Miss Kaplan and other's at Nintendo, fuck even a manager at the World Store said "Yes Component cables will be available in stores on day one. "
The fuckers are back ordered to hell online now, and have been for awhile. Personally I don't like ordering shit online, I don't like having to pay for shipping, I don't like having to wait. Call me impatient but some times I am. There are certain things I want to be able to just walk into a store and buy, and sure I could order them online, but that doesn't in anyway shape or form change the fact that they dropped the ball BIG TIME on this. I mean NOTHING is available in stores, nothing, no RF, no Composite, no S-Video, and no Component. It's so asinine. It shos such a lack of thinking on NoA's part. I mean they were asked a billion times in interviews and emails from people asking if component cables would be available instores, they HAD to have known there was a demand for it. Do they do anything about it, no they just didn't give a fuck at all. NoJ, and NoE did how ever, and that's what pisses me off all the more. It would seem the US got the majority of the Systems but Japan got all the cables.
I just feel I have to call them out on this, as I've said before I think for the most part this was a great launch, all except for this fuck up, which IMHO is a huge one. It's only made all the worse thanks to scalpers and the moronic general public who hear that component cables are rare so everyone and their fucking mother has to have one now, even though half of them wouldn't have given a shit about them if they weren't "rare".
I mean come on how hard is it to make some cables, there is no reason for them to not start pumping them out and have 10,000 in stores in no time. They shouldn't need months and months to get a supply out there, it's plastic and some simple copper wire. There's no specialty chip in there, it's just common every day 75ohm cables, and some plastic.
I Googled and couldn't find this "recent industry survey". Link to your source?
Personally, I don't think people really care about BC. They think they do, but in reality most people want to play new games, not old ones. I think it's a nice feature to have, but very, very, underutilized.
On the bright side, at least Nintendo is actually selling component cables in stores this time around.
just got back from best buy, they had react s video cables in stock for 19.99
they also had 2 places (not in stock) for component cables labeled react brand was 24.99 and the other had no brand (probably psyclone) but was 49.99
Apparently, the VC is getting a game that certain retro gamers have been clamoring for for a decade, and it isn't a Sega or Nintendo game. It's also apparently for a system that currently is not on the VC.
Dracula X, I presume?
Wow, 3rd party games sold like complete ass in Japan...
Nintendo - 553,429 / 87.6%
3rd party - 78,050 / 12.4%
Hardware Sales
Wii - 350,358
Software Sales
Wii Sports - 176,167
Wii Play - 174,297
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 139,011
Odoru Made in Wario - 63,954
Swing Golf Panya - 16,908
Ennichi no Tatsujin (Namco mini games) - 10,763
Red Steel - 9,392
SD Gundam Scad Hammers - 9,226
Tamagotchi Pika Pika Daitouryou - 8,042
Elebits - 5,791

Crayon Shin-Chan - 4,248
Trauma Center Second Opinion - 4,107
Kororinpa - 2,416
Necro-Nesia - 1,934
Wing Island - 800
Hopefully this is a wake up call to good Japanese developers to stop making games for the system.
I'm surprised at Elebits' relatively low numbers. An FPS (Red Steel) sold almost twice as much? In Japan? That doesn't seem right.
Just got back from local Best Buy in MN and they have the Psyclone brand component cables in stock. No more muddy Twilight Princess.
I heard a theory some time back froma long time N-fan boy that the reason most third party games sell poorly on nintendo systems is they have to compete with nintendo made games. Sort of like steak over hamburger, I don't really agree with the idea. Mainly because I don't think most of nintendos own entries are always very good. But it's hard to argue with the fact they are generally better than the craptastic third party stuff the systems get. Which is why they sell better in my opinion not because they are great just better than the rest.Quote:

3rd party games can do fine on Nintendo systems. RE4 sold almost 400k in its first month, I believe Viewtiful Joe sold over 200k in its, and Tales of Symphonia has sold a surprising amount, well over 500k.
Make a good effort and it'll sell. Throw some bullshit shovelware at it, and it won't. Nintendo systems just look worse for 3rd parties on the average because they get less of the former and more of the latter, percentage-wise.
It's an interesting question. Part of it is Nintendo losing franchises like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear, which no doubt would have sold well. But it may mean that the people buying the Wii in Japan (so far) are fanboys. They need to be pulling non-gamers, Sony gamers, etc. if they want to seriously compete this generation.
I don't think 3 or 4 games can really be considered doing well for third parties. That's why I didn't even bother mentioning them. The point was even shovel ware can sell on the other systems (fitty cent that new ff 7 game) just not on nintendo consoles. That's what his whole idea was about, I just didn't really agree with it.
Well if 3rd party developers make big fine tuned great games, im sure they will sell on a Nintendo system. Its just that I dont see any company making anything as big as lets say Metal Gear or Final Fantasy standard.
They need to put time and effort and not just anything made quickly....then again, the majority are smaller and less funded companies.
"Well if 3rd party developers make big fine tuned great games, im sure they will sell on a Nintendo system."
RE4 flopped on the Cube. It's why there will not be a RE5 on it. This whole "Oh, Nintendo makes the best games" is horseshit.
I was playing Trauma Center and Monkey Ball with some friends on Sunday and now I can't wait until Christmas.
Say what you want about Monkey Ball's single player in the Wii version, but playing those mini games while drinking is the most fun I've had with a multiplayer game in a long time.
That's nothing. Are you telling me that the game performed as Capcom had hoped?
It was one of the Cube's biggest sellers...but that's not saying much. Especially considering the $ it cost to make it. That's why it came out on PS2. That's why RE5 is a 360 and PS3 game.
The first five months of availability for a game late in a console's life span is pretty close to how much it'll sell.
If Vice City or San Andreas sold 1 million, it would be pretty crappy. There is such a thing as 'relative'.
Wow, now a million in sales is crappy... but only if it's on a Nintendo console. It's getting downright nutty.
Capcom thought the sales were great, which is why it will be bringing RE games to the Wii.
No, Capcom did not think the sales were great. The Wii is getting some shit spinoff.
Nintendo sucks.

"Interestingly, at 68 percent, backwards compatibility was listed as the second most important factor. This could be a disadvantage for Microsoft's Xbox 360, which only features limited compatibility with certain original Xbox titles."
The PS2 version was announced a month before the Cube version even hit shelves (which cut heavily into the Cube sales; quite a few people that were planning on buying a Cube for the game just waited for the PS2 version instead).

"With Resident Evil 4, the series and the entire survival horror genre have been advanced to a whole new level," said Todd Thorson, director of marketing, Capcom Entertainment. "It's been rewarding to see that the incredible response the game has received from fans and critics has been mirrored by a phenomenal retail performance."
Maybe Spo and Joust can argue in PMs? Their posts to each other alone must be stressing out dial-up users.
I bolded the right parts.Quote:

Also, I have no opinion on this and you guys that do need to find better outlets for...whatever it is that is wrong with you.
People are starting to post vids of themselves playing the wii on the internet. As you can guess they are pretty damn funny.
The girl in the gray is mildly hot. I'll tap that
The little girl one is so cute.
The girl in gray is indeed somewhat attractive. The little girl one is old'd.
I have s-video cables, and life is as it should be again. Now to get that roomy SD card I've been eyeing and my Wii peripheral shopping is 100% complete.

I say god damn it when putting as well, it's good to see it's universal.

By the way, if you're waiting on component cables, I'd go ahead and order from Nintendo. I placed an order Friday, it was listed as backordered, but it shipped today, and I should have it in my hands Thursday or Friday. Not bad.
Best Buy, like everyone mentioned a few pages back. I walked in, looked for the blank peg they normally wouldn't be hanging on, and almost missed them because of it.
James
So that's what it is? Weak. They go from doing ROMs of old games to doing ROMs of REALLY old games?
How about upgrade them like XBLA ;/

According to Enterbrain, the best-selling 360 game of the weekend was Namco's Ridge Racer 6, which sold 29,891 copies. The runners-up were lagging far behind, however--Perfect Dark Zero came in second with 14,897 games sold, and Need for Speed Most Wanted took third place with 6,842 moved out the door.
If launch numbers stop Japan developers from making games, all we'll get is Riiiiiiiidge Racer and shitty Gundam games. Also, 360 had a system to game rate of .91 while PS3 was .98. Maybe Japan will just stop making games altogether. Hey, no loss there. rotful at Gundam Piss in the Player's Face selling nearly as much as Ridge Racer.Quote:
# Total PS3 units sold: 88,400 (33,800 20GB; 54,600 60GB)
# Best Selling Game: Riiiiidge Racer 7 (30,300 units)
# Second Place: Gundam Crossfire (30,000 units)
# Bronze Medal: Resistance: Fall of Man (15,700 units)
We don't need more Ridge Racer games. Maybe if they did something to the franchise it wouldn't have sold like crap (in Japan, obviously every 360 game sells like crap, but that's because they have poor taste in pretty much everything in life).
lol, good comeback Finch!

Level editor that lets you share your creations online in Elebits? Nice! :D
WiiConnect24 not up yet, so we won't be able to share for a while? Lame!

Hey, any1 know how the sales of the Wii and Wii Sports were different in Japan?
Wii hardware - 350,358
Wii Sports - 176,167
I thought the game is bundled with the system! Or is that not the case in the land of the rising sun?
How about both services actually do shit to compete for buyers instead of releasing either too few games to actually care about or just dumping roms with nice emulators.
Japan sales are usually pretty anger inducing anyway, and neither launch had much else to choose from. For rly, it's kind of all shit all around. I really would've liked to see a genuinely good game that actually improves by leaps and bounds upon its predecessor (Trauma Center) sell more. I wonder what the American launch numbers were.Quote:

Circuit City is selling third party component cables for $60. They're called "Python" cables or something like that; the whole gold diamond platinum encrusted wire gimmick to charge double for cables.
Nash, are you a necrophile? If you don't like girls that are alive, you probably wouldn't find her attractive.
If it was just a picture, yeah whatever, but I liked how she was all sprightly and spirited, trying her best to play the game well. I could see her possibly being annoying IRL though.

VC PAL troubles...lawl

Half-Life 2 with the wiimote. Looks really easy and it doesn't even use all of the wiimotes features nor does it even use the nunchuck.
I picked mine up at the midnight launch last night. Enjoying it so far.
One thing that is lol - PAL territories get Wii Sports in a proper white DVD case with sleeve + booklet. Also, VC selection here makes the US list look amazing.
Off to go buy accessories now.
lol wii.
I've seen claims that the SNES Virtual Console emulation offers a low-res option. Can anybody confirm this please?
