I'm guessing Serra wanted hughes guys to fight first, then have the winner go up against one of his hand picked guys (which he could pick the match up in his favor obviously), and if Serras guy beat hughes guy, would leave hughes with no reason to be on the last show, and with no fighters in the finale.

And the whole ultra-mil-badass style of training? Lots of athletes don't respond real well to that. Sometimes a helping hand (or an encouraging word) goes a LOT farther than an ass-whipping (see: Team Hughes turning on their coach and getting mentally exhausted).
We didn't see this the last time w/Hughes b/c he was winning. Adversity has shown his true colors.

Yeah. After loss #6, he stormed into the gym and demanded his guys "convince" him to stay. WTF? They're not here for you Coach! You're supposed to be here for them.
Big surprise when the guys get back to the house and they're all complaining how they're tired of his act and how mentally tired b/c all he does is ride them.
