Heading out in a few to catch this at a sports bar; I'm fucking hyped! The only bad thing about these is that some jamokes always get into a fucking fight afterwards, usually two-to-three feet in front of where I'm sitting. I always manage to yell out a "KICK HIS ASS, SEABASS!" so it's not all bad.
Caught the PPV at a sports bar.
Missed the Patrick Cote fight, but I heard he won.
Rampage scored a nice knockout, but he didn't blow me away. Liddell doesn't have much to fear, IMO.
Some little Mexican completely destroyed his opponent within seconds of the opening bell. I don't know who either of them were but the fight was over before it began.
Cro Cop completely dominated Sanchez and scored a way easy TKO in the first round. Sanchez basically ran away the whole fight while Cro Cop kept walking forward like a machine. CC landed some nice kicks (including some STIFF shots to the midsection and a nice left roundhouse to the head) and punches, put Sanchez down with a good blow to the face, mounted him with ease and ground and pounded his ass until the ref stopped it. Good debut for the future UFC Heavyweight champ.
As for the main event, first I have to say that Travis Lutter is a fucking retard. The guy drops, like, 20 pounds right before the fight and still comes in 2 pounds too heavy, thus the fight is changed to a non-title match. Dana White should be furious at Lutter for fucking up the chance of a lifetime. Lutter was weak, flabby, and dehydrated.
That said, the guy STILL almost won. Anderson Silva's dropped several notches in my eyes after this fight. In fact, if Lutter dropped weight like he should have and came into this fight at 100%, Silva totally would have lost. Lutter kept taking Silva down constantly in the first round and at one point fully mounted him and landed something like 5 or 6 uncontested punches direcly into Silva's face. Sadly, Lutter's punches had nothing behind them because his weight loss rendered him so weak. Silva came back a little in the second round, managed to sink in a triangle choke and nailed Lutter's head with elbows until he tapped. I really thought Silva would destroy Lutter in seconds but it ended up being the match of the night with Silva almost getting his ass handed to him.
Overall, a good PPV.
Crocop fight was glorious. He walked forward with no expression like he was the fucking Terminator while Sanchez backed up around the octagon for four straight minutes in fear for his life. Crocop is a fucking monster. It'll be a wonderful day when he breaks Sylvia's goofy face.

Diego should win the fight. I've only see Koscheck a couple times. He showed great wrestling...and nothing else. Really, really boring to watch, and I think Diego's skillset will make him the easy victor.
while i agree with that, he's still got some crazy power. itll be a little weird going back after graduating 5 years ago and having the bar filled with a bunch of fresh faces all acting like they know him. should be a pretty crazy atmosphere.

Yeah a buddy of mine brought that up this morning. Personally I don’t think until he does the GSP/Franca route and begs for a shot, he wont get one for a while. Every time they interview him he goes the super humble route and says when im ready ill get one, plus hes not too marketable, which seems to be the UFC’s focus as far as ranking and title matches are concerned lately. Yeah he’s been an unstoppable bastard, but he’s quiet and quiet doesn’t sell.

jackson v eastman wasn't really a easy stepping stone match for jackson's debut. from previous fights, seems like one of jackson's best weapons is his ability to put people on the ground at close range with his throws due to his incredible strength. this was neutralized in the current fight because eastman is uncannily strong. might be a different story versus chuck. great addition to the UFC.
the cro cop fight was more of a punching bag dummy match... but what an awesome start to show what he has to offer the UFC for people who haven't seen his stuff before. he's been a favorite of mine since i saw his start in pride. his pursuit of his opponent instilled everything people should look for in a fighter. finally something exciting coming to the heavy weights after the defeat of arlovski. also, i don't think they should have stopped the fight at the end of the first round... the guy was still defending himself.. and i would have been nice to see the impending early second round KO.
unfortunate that these fighters are being taken from what i feel is a superior MMA arena, mostly due to the card system, that makes pride less of a snooze fest... but it's great to see these guys get more exposure.
i thought the silva fight was pretty good with lutter coming in as shitty as he did. everyone pretty much knew before the fight that silva had a less than stellar ground game. it was great he finished of lutter with a triangle(pretty much). lutter deserved to be defeated by what he said was his own superior game. what a fuck up.
the under card lightweight fight was amazing... if anyone missed that, be sure to check it out. i thought the scoring should have been a lot closer though. 30-27... hmmm?
i'm not really looking forward to the next event... sylvia v couture seems like it could be really boring, and i don't like hughes (unless he's beating on bj penn's face). i'm hoping franklin comes back strong... but the silva flight might have been one of those where the fighter never really comes back from a defeat.
you guys were mentioning diego sanchez as being humble... he's always come across to me as a headstrong cocky asshole.. mixed with the fact that he endlessly promotes jesus the lord a saviour after each win, it's no wonder they haven't given him a title shot. I think the ownership got jesus'd out with the return of the new holy vitor belfort, who ended up being a giant letdown. to be fair, diego is a great fighter, and i hope he finds his place in the UFC, even if it's holding the title.

Don't get me wrong, I like Matt Hughes (even though he came off as a massive dick on TUF). But Penn is probably the most talented MMA fighter pound for pound in the world. If he would quit smoking so much pot and focus on his cardio he could not just beat but embarrass anyone in the world at 170 (he's fighting at 155 now). his next fight(i think) is against the other TUF coach, jans pulver, at the end of season 5. Jans looked pretty crappy on his return, maybe bj could redeem his loss to jans. I remember watching their first fight and being pretty excited the pulver won... i don't remember it being a blow out or anything though.

i don't agree with that at all.. there is a huge point to the silva vs chuck flight taking place... and silva's loss to cro cop shouldn't have any effect of silva's reputation or standings in his respected weight class since it was an open weight tourney and cro cop is way bigger.

Silva outweighed Cro Cop by 5 pounds in their last fight, so weight class had little to do with it. There's no way that after taking as bad a beating as Silva did that he would be ready for another fight in November. According to Dana White:
"It kind of defeats the purpose now. The guy just got, literally, destroyed. They're (PRIDE) still saying we can do a fight in November. They can't do a fight in November. The athletic commission would put them on suspension for 90 days. The guy got knocked out cold. First, he got beaten to death, then he got knocked out cold. There's no way the guy could fight again in a month and a half. Plus, he just lost."
Edit: Just rewatched the Japanese broadcast of Silva/Mirko for the exact numbers: Silva was at 102.3 kg and Mirko 100.6 kg. So about 5 pounds difference.
I believe when Silva first started fighting MMA professionally he fought at 185 and then moved up to 200/205 a few years later. Word is he roids like crazy. Generally adding muscle and moving up in weight classes is a bad idea, although if you're good enough it can work (Silva and Penn being the two obvious examples). You could tell that Cro Cop looked bigger when they fought even though Silva was a little heavier.
Okay, this may sound strange, but I follow MMA like most people follow mainstream sports. I was thinking the other day why there isn't any "Fantasy MMA" league or something where you pick winners, or where you have a stable of fighters. Big fights would be worth more points, and it would also help expose the smaller shows.
I found http://fantasyfightclub.com/ but I'm not sure if there is a catch and I don't want to register if there is one. Any of you guys know of something cool like this that we could do?
I am so down for a TNL MMA Fantasy League. I think it would be awesome, and because fights aren't as frequent as say, baseball games, it would be easier to manage.
I'll look into this one, but I'll also keep an eye out for something similar elsewhere.

I registered at the site above and it isn't really what I was looking for. It is basically "fantasy betting" where you bet your points on whatever fights you want. I was really hoping to draft a stable of fighters and get points when they won in different ways and such. :(

Just watched the EliteXC event. The fight between the ladies was great. While their ground game still wasn't really up to speed, it was a great fight that worked towards getting people to accept women in combat sports.
Also, this may seem like a small thing, but when they give the figthter's record they say how many KOs they have and how many submissions. I enjoy that quite a bit.

In Pride, actively trying to finish the fight is the most important thing. They also score the whole fight whereas in the UFC it is a round-based scoring system.
I don't know how the EliteXC scores matches, but they have a 15 second ground clock for "inactivity" but I'll be damned if the clock didn't start the second they hit the floor (for better or worse). I would assume they score in a hybrid mix between UFC and Pride with a tad of important of stand-up over ground-game for their interests. I think the know they need knockouts more when trying to put forth an exciting product.
I personally like the differences in the orgs as they offer a different type of fight. I do think stomping the head of a downed opponent is a bit barbaric, and that Pride refs step in very late, but that is me.
PS: Anybody have an opinion on this: Is Herb Dean "lucky" to be at the center of controversy or does he bring it on himself?

Herb stopped Tito/Shamrock 2 way too fast, that's for sure, not that it would have changed the outcome if he had let it go on.
They sure messed up that 15 second clock the one time they tried and use it.
Gotta give the guys a warning first. Then if they don't get it moving on the ground, the ref can start an official 15 second timer.

Anybody watch the bodog fight show on tv last night? I started watching it, seemed a bit gimmicky, then I was like "I'd rather goto sleep then watch this".
I was going to watch the bodog thing. Then I remembered how it seemed like b.s. last time I saw something of it so I didn't bother. Is the showtime thing going to be a recurring show?
I didn't really enjoy the Bodog thing. Kinda boring.
One thing made me laugh, however. They were doing the pre-fight interviews and one guy was like, "Nothing he can do will suprise me, unless he grabs my ass or something."
I watched it last night and found it very boring too.
Just caught the Bodog thing on Ion last night (what the hell is this channel and when did I start getting it?). Reallllly weak production. The announcers were like what you'd hear with me and some friends hanging around watching MMA. "Oooh, that hurts. Right in da gut. *Chuckles*"
I only saw two fights, but they were pretty boring. Both went to decisions. None of the fighters showed impressive skills or made exciting fights. The ropes around the ring were too loose, and any time the fight got near the ropes it had to be reset 'cause the guys just fell through 'em.
And was that Bif Naked with the intro/outro segments?
Yeah, those announcers were a blast. During one of the fights they were talking about how the "packed house" was really making some noise, but I think there were only 11 people sitting around the ring and I think two of them maybe clapped at one point. The elimination bouts on The Ultimate Fighter have bigger, louder crowds around the ring.
PRIDE 33 is this weekend. Nakamura is out due to injury but Kharitonov is signed on now which is even better.
I think if Silva has had proper time to train and gets back some of what he used to have he'll punch through Henderson, but I don't know if he has it in him anymore. I'll be surprised if this fight doesn't go to a decision.
Shogun/Overeem should be ok until Alistair gasses and gets stomped on.
those are the two fights i wanted to see... i thought pride was usually on sundays, but i guess since this one is in america they are having it on saturday.. what a bummer, i'll be out of town.

Pride was fucking awesome. Crazy upsets. Hendo is my new hero. Gomi was way out of shape. Pride needs to stop putting him in non-title fights; it's clear he doesn't take them seriously. And how the fuck does Little Nog not only get knocked out, but get knocked out by a judoka who just started to train striking?

It's annoying hearing lots of people complaining that due to all of the upsets Pride is in trouble with their image and future matchmaking. As long as they keep producing memorable events like this last one, I couldn't give a shit. This sport needs surprise outcomes to keep it interesting.
Due to all of the damage done, a number of fighters are on suspension to have proper time to recover:
"Vanderlei Silva suspended until 4/11. This means he won’t work the 4/8 Saitama Super Arena event.
Dan Henderson suspended minimum until 4/11 or when his fractured right hand heals. So a re-match with him and Silva is remotely possible for 4/28 in Las Vegas, but doubtful.
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is medically suspended until 4/11, meaning any prospect of a re-match in Japan on 4/8 in Saitama against Sokoudjou is out the window.
All the discussion about Takanori Gomi vs. Nick Diaz happening on 4/8 in Saitama for the Lightweight title is gone now that Gomi has been suspended until 4/11. Additionally, Diaz has a fractured right orbital bone (eye) and likely won’t be able to fight until at least May. Elite XC has a show in Atlantic City, NJ on 5/5 and PRIDE has a Lightweight tournament show on 5/20 in Japan. The only possibility of Gomi vs. Diaz in the near future is on 5/20 in a non-title match."
Without a doubt, Pride 33 showcased some outstanding fights and should be an overall positive impact for Pride in the US. However, I would say that some of Pride's proclaimed superiority was further exposed as unwarranted.Quote:

I think Pride 33 showed evidence that these top rated Pride fighters are not so untouchable. Rogerio Nogueira, an excellent fighter many Pride fans would have had you believe better than any of the UFC's 205 division, got KOd by a relatively unknown fighter. And Pride's 205 champion was upset by an opponent that moved up a weight division (and still weighed well under the 205 limit).
Not to take anything away from the Pride fighters I mentioned. They're all exciting fighters and great competitors, and on any given night the results could've been different. But I think it was good that so many upsets happened in one night. Really underscored the reality that these are fights, anything can happen, and everyone's human afterall. I think it (hopefully) brings the perception of these fighters back to Earth. No doubt, Pride has some of the best fighters in the world. But it should be obvious, now more so than ever, that assuming a top level Pride fighter is inherently superior to a top level UFC fighter is a mistake.
I do really like seeing fighters from the different orgs changing sides, though. I think it's good to put both organizations into perspective and shut up either side's rabid fanboys. Also gives us a chance to see some outstanding matches like the Gomi v Diaz fight. Now I want to see more 205 cross overs--both orgs have strong 205 divisions and some potentially awesome match ups.
EDIT: Just watched this interview with Nick Diaz, a day or so after the fight. In it he says Gomi was throwing "some little Hadouken fuckin' punch in there"--awesome. He also has no idea what busted his eye open like that. Pretty weird. They must've butted heads when they clinched up near the end. My only guess.
Holy shit! Randy Couture over Sylvia by complete domination. Captain America is once again champion. What a fight! Couture's first punch put Sylvia on his ass 5 seconds into the bout. That fight was awesome.
It was a good night all around. It was nice to see a ref or two not stand the fighters up and let them work on the ground. Good stuff.
