As I was trying to fall asleep last night, I realized this game reminds me more of Heart of Darkness than any of the other step-based platformers. And not the gay CG parts (which should have been left out entirely), but the actual gameplay. There was something sinister about that game.
The thing about Precision Platformer is that a bunch of these games really seem like the opposite of precise to me. Big timing windows and all of that versus the Mario fare.

What are you talking about? I no longer use the staircase to my third-floor aparment, I just walk away, do a quick turn/jump, and enter through a convenient window. Likewise for leaving, I just jump out and do a butt-stomp a few feet from the ground, landing without problem.

I don't think this game is technically "independent". They're funded by the Hungarian government. I'm pretty sure it's Hungaria. And all that's been shown so far is nothing but concept art.
If the game turns out like this, it'll be sweet.
I could see this releasing on Steam to some acclaim.

I don't think they have an exclusivity agreement, I think they're just a very very small team that focused on one platform and left it incidentally exclusive. I'm not positive on that, but that's the impression I got.
EDIT: Just read the announcement press release, and they allude to "other consoles" down the line, so yeah, not "real" exclusive.

Planet-xbox review says it's 5-6 hours long, which I'm okay with for $15
5-6 is pushing it, I'd say it was 3-4. It really should have been $10. Amazing game, great art and atmosphere but it's really short.
Out of This World and Heart of Darkness were like 30 minutes. I'm fine with the length.
Maybe on subsequent playthroughs when you knew exactly what to do, but I'm quite both those games took me several hours my first (only) time through.
Anyway, I'm okay with $15 I guess if the experience is high quality enough and it's not a port. Braid for instance was worth every penny.
I think it is worth it. I've already enjoyed it more than some movies I've paid to see in the theaters and I'm only half way through. If you count popcorn and a coke this game is cheaper than seeing a movie in the evening.
I beat it in 2 hours. It's pretty awesome, and it's unlikely you'll get all the achievements on your first time through. Are there multiple endings?
Yeah I missed a ton of the achievements, going to have to go back and hunt for those.
I'm hoping 100% gets a better ending. I liked the game well enough, but it seems to rely a bit too much on atmosphere. Plus the atmosphere breaks a bit when I start laughing at some of the deaths, like ending up hanging from a nest of spikes skewered by an eyeball.

I'm surprised they got away with so much child violence. Dragging a dead kid into a water pit to be a flotation device is pretty fucked up. I love the Lord of the Flies atmosphere you get from the other kids in the game.

It's pretty amazing how close they were able to get (actually they surpassed it) to the 2006 concept reel that got us excited in the first place:
I wish there were more games like this. This is the only game since Flashback and Out of this World that felt anything like those two games.
And now I want to go back and play those again.
Just beat a few games, might as well buy a new one.
Dave comparing it to OotW and Flashback is a huge endorsement in my book.
It's much more OotW than Flashback. No dialog, no levels, thick atmosphere, and most of the challenge is from situational/environmental puzzles.
I'm loving the crap out of this game, but I'm stuck indefinetly at that point with the 2 pulley weights, any suggestions before I start youtubing that bad boy?

Physics-based platforming and black silhouette foregrounds have basically been the autotuning of the indie development world for the past few years. That one does look litigiously similar, though.

Yeah Mzo described the right part, still early in the game. I pull the mine cart out to where it gets stopped, pull the top weight up first, then pull up the second after I drop down, and there is just no way to do that fast enough. Is that the solution, I'm just doing it wrong?
Kind of. Don't you think you need to use the cart for anything? I put a stronger hint in spoiler tags.
Maybe you could somehow pull the first rope past the gears and then somehow get a hold on it again, but closer to the weights?
If you haul ass you can grab the rope before it pulls all the way back up between the two gears.

I was entertained by this, but XBLA pricing is weird to get a handle on. On the one hand, Pac Man CE cost 800 points and UNO cost 400 points and I STILL play that shit semi-regularly several years later. Limbo took me like 4 days to beat, and I see very little reason to go back and get 111% so I'm probably never going to play this again. Do I feel ripped off by Limbos price? No. I guess maybe that means that some of the older XBLA stuff I still play was worth way more than I paid for it.
I don't think it's even worth comparing the prices of games in most situations. The value for money is so subjective and so varying that I think it's totally pointless unless two games are very, very similar to one another. Is Pac-Man CE a better game than Geometry Wars 2? Will I get more value out of my $10 on one as opposed to the other? I don't know! I don't even know how to begin to know!
