THQ Inc. announced today the release of their newest World Wrestling Entertainment licensed video game, World Wrestling Entertainment WrestleMania X8 exclusively for Nintendo GameCube. WWE WrestleMania X8 is backed by a multi-million dollar marketing campaign that includes national television, print support and point-of-purchase advertising. WWE WrestleMania X8 features an original grapple-based engine that emphasizes simulation-style gameplay, accenting reversals and strong counter moves that Nintendo fans have grown to expect from past WWE videogames.

This game is very much like Smackdown with a crippled Create-a-Superstar feature. The Hell in the Cell is improved, the reversals are tight, but this is nowhere near as good as No Mercy. Look for a full review later in the week.

I did mention that the Create-a-Superstar was terrible, right? I want to spend a bit more time with the game, but I doubt there is all that much to unlock.

Unless you absolutely will not be denied a new WWE game, stick with the old N64 games and Fire Pro. If you want arcade action, track down a copy of Giant Gram 2000 for the Dreamcast. That has a bad create-a-wrestler, too, but everything else is golden.

I don't like the style used from the smackdown games and to have this series being ripped apart like this really turns off my interest more then anything. I'd rather have the old development team making the new ones, or at least get the one that makes giant gram to continue. Man, like xbox, we're stuck with a sour option, THIS SUCKS!!! :mad:

to get or not to get, that is the question!

If you are more of a WWE fan than a wrestling game fan, by all means, pick up this title. It has fairly updated rosters and a wide selection of game modes. If you are more of a wrestling game purist, however, you have other, more compelling choices.

Those who enjoy commanding a vast roster of created wrestlers should especially consider a rental before a possible purchase, as the choice of wrestling gear is quite limited. Those who enjoy realism and simulation should also buy cautiously - there is no blood and there is no localized damage.

In many ways, this game is a step back to 1998. Considering how good it should have been, WX8 is a disappointment.

Shockingly, someone on the GameFAQs board had something intelligent to say...



I cannot believe how disappointed I am in this game. Seriously, I'm in shock about how crappy this game is.

Look, we don't need to discuss what's so crappy about it -- if you've played it, you know. This post is to tell you guys who feel like I do what we can do about it.

1.) First off, if you hate it, take it back. This is the most effective way for THQ to hear us. The bottom line is money, and if this game doesn't sell as well as they expect, they'll hear us loud and clear. I'm taking mine back tomorrow.

2.) Secondly, let 'em know! We're consumers, we have a voice. Tell them what's wrong. Start with email. Here are the email addresses you'll need:

Start with THQ. When you email them, don't just scream profanity. Tell them exactly what you think, but do it intelligently. They'll listen. (I emailed them today -- I'll let you know when I get a response.

Then, email Nintendo:

Tell them what you think. You wouldn't believe how effective this can be. I already got a resonse. I'll post it after this message.

Then, email WWE:

FanServices@wwecorp.com

Tell them you're a fan, you've bought their previous products including wrestling games (No Mercy, Wrestemania2K) and that THQ has released an inferior product that you have returned. This is important -- stress that the WWE is currently LOSING YOUR MONEY based on THQ's performance.

3. Write a letter. Email is great, and people take it seriously. But nothing packs the punch of a well-written letter. Here are the addresses you'll need:

I know writing a letter can be time-consuming and annoying, but that's exactly what shows these people that you care. Write one letter and send it to all three (it's good if THQ knows that the WWE and Nintendo are getting your letter.)

Look, this stuff works. We have a right to be heard. THQ will listen if we present ourselves intelligently. I have written several letters and emails already, and I will write several more.

I'm mad. They ruined my beloved wrestling games. And I'm going to do something about it.

Sorry to hear that you are disappointed with your WWE Wrestlemania X8
game and we are sorry to hear that you are giving up on the NINTENDO
GAMECUBE because of that one game. However, the quality of our system and
games cannot be measured by one game alone. It is the sum of all the
great titles, including those that were announced at the recent E3 show.
And, contrary to what you wrote, we do care about what our consumer's
say regarding both in-house and licensee titles. We would suggest that
you contact THQ directly, and explain your disappointment to them. In
addition, we are forwarding your comments to the appropriate department
here at Nintendo. In this way, your voice will be heard.
