Um, w/o the patents there would be very little incentive for high powered medication to be developed. It sucks yes but we wouldn't be much if any better off, and likely far worse off if the system was made to force drug sales down.

I know the patents are how they make money, but the terms on most patents are absurd. The pharmaceutical industry has sprouted profit-wings and feeds on the semen of angels made of money. We protect corporations before our own citizens health, and that's fucked. Not to mention the lies they feed the public about side effects and the addictive nature of many of their drugs. Also: Advertising the way they do should be re-criminalized.

The only reason medical companies develop any of these in the first place is to make a profit. Things like AIDS, Hepatitus, etc, etc. could've possibly been cured by now but not much effort has been put into finding a cure. More medical funding is spent on sexual enhancement drugs like Viagra than AIDS research.

Then if these companies you hate were burnt to the ground, you would cease to function. They are businesses; if they can't make money they won't make drugs- very simple. It costs hundreds of millions of dollars to bring a drug to market. Why would they spend that kind of money and then give away the product for free?
