Also, this isn't YouTube but I urge everyone to watch The Big Snit (better quality than YT). May be my favorite short animated film.
Seeing things like that makes me want to try it but good lord that would require a lot of free time.
That Little Matchgirl short is Disney? Interesting. I really hope the studio is mustering the talent to put out a full length feature with animation of that quality. The subject matter I doubt considering the kind of sad, morbid nature of it- but an adultish full length disney film. I'd see it.

That one's awesome. Check out the link in my first post. Richard Condie worked on both 'Big Snit' and 'The Cat Came Back' so their timing and humor are really similar.
That was incredible. So much emotion was given there. I love the determined, yet desperate expression she makes when she strikes the three matches. This is unlike anything Disney's done in a long, long time. I could even say it had a soul to it; its creators really cared about it.Quote:

Amazing animated short from 1980 by Chinese animator Te Wei. Unfortunately I couldn't find his earlier work Buffalo Boy and the Flute, which is a favorite of mine. Pretty clearly an influence on Okami, incidentally. Part 1/2

Now that I've shared a bunch, does anyone with a better memory than me rememeber a series of animates shorts that used to play during commercial break s on Nickelodeon during the late 80s, featuring a small gray dog? I recall one where the gag involved him dreaming of sleeping, and another one with his insane owner playing a piano and singing a song called "I'm mad". I can't remember what they were called or who did them, as I was pretty young at the time.
That dog one was called dog brain if I remember right. Was it that simple animation short where the dog just sleeped, snored and farted while people made noise around the house?
If thats it, its done by the same people who did that animation shin posted. Its all done by some studio up in Canada, cause I remember seeing/reading about Canadian animation a long time ago.
I was trying to think of another Nick short as well that involved someone breaking open a hard boiled egg or something. Details are sketchy because I haven't seen it in so long.Quote:

International Rocketship was the production company (same people that produced Dog Brain, which is probably why I connected them in my memory.)
The cartoon is called "Sing, Beast, Sing" and coincidentally happens to be by Marv Newland who did another classic short I was about to post.

It's the adventures of Stevie and Zoya, aka Stevie the angry youth. MTV used to show clips of em between videos back in the day. This is all of em combined in order. The guy who did the cartoons is back and doing an "updated" stevie and Zoya but with flash, but its not the same. Maybe I'll check and see how it is now to see if it got any better.Quote:

It was a Cal Arts Thesis animation (back in my undergrad days I used to have a connection that got me a VHS tape with all of the previous years Cal Arts thesis') and was one of the funniest things I had ever seen. In the many years the VHS tape it was on has gone missing.

This I know but still I'd like to hear it again was a good song, all though this version of it is A LOT different than the version from this animation. It's a lot emptier and slower. This seems like a kidafied version of the song I heard. :( The version from this animation had a full guitar piece not just a half there background and other instruments, like a full band playing the song.
Yeah, it's an old kid's song from like the 30s or something.
The best way to dig out some of these old cartoons might be public libraries with a really good media section. You can probably find old film reels and stuff there, which might be the only form many of these exist in.

Best PSA of all time. A ton of cartoons characters (from Chipmunks, TMNTs, WBs, Garfield, Alf, etc) join forces to rally against the evils of drugs. Blunt and hilarious (Bugs Bunny: "Wah is dis? A JOINT?!").
Is it wrong that I laughed at all the handicapped children? Also, I like how the video arcade is the den of substance abuse, and how a bunch of 13 or 14 year olds jump right from weed to crack.

Since it is the season and all, I think it has to be mentioned that "The Snowman" is one of the greatest animated shorts of all time. The whole thing isn't on youtube, but a clip of the chilling flytrhough is, and it's easily the best thing animated in the 80s.

Wow, you can really tell he directed it too if you compare it to the liquid television Aeon Flux's. With the camera angles, weird 3D effects and first person shots.
Mark Mothersbaugh (lead singer from Devo) on music, too. I really hate Peter Chung, btw. The Rugrats thing is fine, but Aeon Flux is unwatchable.

Back on track, I always liked this series. It's an early animation by Max Fleischer (who, IMO, is as important to animation as Walt Disney). They were the first cartoons to make use of the rotoscope:

That one is a recent one that made its rounds on the net. Some of this I remember from TV, some of it I saw in theaters as a kid (back when there were still theaters that played these sorts of things), some of it I've sought out based on reputation. I don't have any one convenient place to to find this stuff, unfortunately.
But that's precisely why this thread was a great idea. Get a bunch of it in one place.

More 80s. Early use of cel-shading-style techniques, which is probably a thinly veiled allegory for the issues facing traditional animation today.
That viking music video is for a Jason Forest aka Donna Summers, he does some nice breakcore/IDM stuff. Its surprising how popular that video is.
Heres a neat animated video for Kid 606, I dunno who did it, but whoever did also did the cover art for his album and I'll have to check it.
Here's some Henry Selick, who worked with Tim Burton on Nightmare before Christmas and also did James and the Giant Peach. I tried to find this on Youtube but its not there. I used to love this on MTV cause it was so bizarre. He uses live action/animation/stop motion all on this one.
