Given the grindy nature of the gameplay and the episodic nature of the stories (with a big overarching plot downplayed in favor of little vingettes in each town), this is pretty much a perfect portable RPG series, so it's not the bad fit that it initially seems to be. A modern Final Fantasy game would be awful on a portable system, but I think this'll work just fine.
