I'd guess this is probably what happened. Remember how Square/Enix had to offer Gamecube games, in exchange for bringing titles to the GBA?

I think this was a good move for Squenix, but I totally sympathize with dog$ here. If my favourite series was announced as DS exclusive I'd spazz too. Most of us would.
(I also think it's interesting that everybody's talking about this, but nobody cares enough about the series to complain about the fact that it looks like they've thrown the gameplay out the window and it's an action rpg now.)
That thinking was what led me to want a PS3 in the first place, but I think they've fucked themselves so royally with a 9-pronged dildo that it'll be 2 years at least before they have a chance to catch up, nevermind passing 360.
Next gen games are so freaking expensive they have to sell a half million copies to turn a profit, which is completely unrealistic on one platform aside from a few smash hits. That's going to lead to more multiplatofrm games than ever, and the 360's lead is going to be impossible for Japanese developers to ignore.
I'm hoping that Microsoft's persistence with the Japanese market and the PS3's expense and relative unavailability means the 360 builds up some serious credibility there. Although I think the reality is that Sony's handed Nintendo the Japanese market back, and 3rd parties, seeing the realities of next gen profitability I mentioned above, are sure to follow sooner rather than later.
Well said and your comments pretty much reflect my sentiments. Very rarely will I buy console-type games for a handheld, which is a big reason why my PSP is getting very little attention and is on the verge of being disposed, saved only by games like Every Extend Extra. I won't buy a game like GTA for the PSP; it's a misuse of potential and resources (semi-redeemed by the PS2 ports) and it won't receive my money. Exceptions to the application of this view would include something like Phantom Hourglass. Since 2D games have not qualified as console-type games for a while now, they are excluded from my no-purchase list.
I didn't buy a portable to play dumbed down console games.
I dont hate portables and honestly dont mind if a well-loved series' sequel ends up on said portable IF its not a step back in quality, gameplay, etc.
This one so far from the two pics I've seen looks obviously at least like a step back in graphical and audio ability. The gameplay remains to be seen. With the visuals and sound being two of the most important things that suck me into any game, I gotta say Im a bit disappointed that DQ9 isnt coming out for a next-gen system with visuals and sound on par with the previous one. Squenix did take a step back here and I dont know if it was a cash run only, trying to make some kind of statement about the game industry currently as Shidoshi mentioned, or if they really feel like the series will advance worthily on the DS. This should have been a side-story like that upcoming Joker game, not a full fledged sequel.
From the first glimpse of this is seems like a regression in tech and the series as a whole...
:wtf:
Compared to what? They're certainly long and tedious with all manner of jobs/skills to master, but I wouldn't really call DQ the "deep RPG". I can think of a half-dozen RPG franchises off the top of my head with much more interesting systems that require far more thought and planning.
