DQ9 graphics are so painful to my eyes :( it's hard coming from DQ8.
I dunno they never bothered me at all to be honest. The only thing that drove me nuts was that no one's facial expressions changed ever.
I should give it more time...or skip it and wait for DQ10 on the Wii.
I suspect DQX will be uglier than VIII as well.
Also the lack of music in this game was irritating. Otherwise it's the best Dragon Quest out so far.
I thought this was the best 3D I've ever seen on the DS. I know that can't come close to DQ8 on the PS2 but it wasn't painful by a long stretch.
lack of music? seems to have all the standard dragon quest tracks. happy town music x2, overworld x2, dungeon, other place, another place, sad tune...uh...OH! i was kinda annoyed at the recycling of the boat music from dq4. i kinda hated it for the phoenix/flying and casino music in dq8, too. sure, it's nice to hear classic tracks but...i wanna hear something new. DOES THIS GAME HAVE A CASINO?!
There's only one Happy town song, one overworld song, two dungeon songs sad town, and like 8 songs. Then there is one for every legacy boss.
the overworld music changes when you play with friends. and...i thought there were like...3 dungeon tracks? that one that plays rarely with the weird trumpet "womp" sound? too much dragon quest music is running through my head at the moment.
I've been playing this a bit recently. Things I like:
- no random encounters (THANK JESUS)
- DQ3/6/7-style class system with customizable generics, yay
- the magic and stairs sound effects are back!
- EQUIPMENT IS FINALLY VISIBLE
- It's also got its own bag!
- ALCHEMY IS INSTANT?!?! Seriously, that was one of the worst things about DQ8.
Yet the following does not please me:
- Nasty FPS hits in populated areas (if you have your allies with you)
- Fuck those retarded spell names. I want the old DW-style back.
- So if I want to steal or use coup de grace, I have to put the character on manual? Considering the limit breaks are gone at the end of battle, you'd THINK they'd program the AI system to use it immediately.
- No respeccing. Even if it cost 100k gold a pop, that shit still needs to be available in games with skill/talent systems.
Wait, you actually use the party AI? Weird.
I agree about respecs a little (especially when you consider that you'd have to erase your save file to start a new game from scratch) but I'm happy with the way my characters turned out.
In related news, I finished this last night.
