Sony has two RPG series that move units in Japan, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. If the next proper DQ sequel is on the DS, Sony now has one, and FFXIII won't be as good as XII, because Square's one good producer isn't doing it.

Because dragon quest is the biggest and most important series in japan.
The system that has the next dragon quest wins almost by default.
well, they can always do 10 on the ps3 or 360 or whatever
I'm not exactly surprised that it's on the ds now that I understand it's practically the jrpg, since the ds is selling like hotcakes over there, but I still don't really see how the lack of a game on a console means its utter demise (especially when said console has been out for less than a month, and most launch software is garbage for any company.)
Eh, they weren't gonna put it on PS3. The fanbase is much too wide a demographic, they'd be shutting a lot of people out by putting it on a console that expensive.
I expected PS2 or Wii, but this makes sense given the nature of the series. Note how VII and VIII didn't show up until around the height of the system's popularity, 2-3 years after launch. PS2 is on its way out and Wii is not yet established; DS is really the only system that fits a similar bill at this point in time.
I like dragon quest.
I am excited to play this.
I will miss having nicer graphics/sound like in 8.
Woo.
Wow, that slaughters Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and the DQ Monsters game. How they got that 3D out of the DS is beyond me. So what's the gimmick? Touchscreen? Use of Dual screens? Glad to see some companies rebeling against increasingly higher production values, not like Dragon Quest really needed to with it's sales power.
