I do love living in NYC area.... I love the city, it is so much to do (and I don't even like going clubbing), museums, plays, all kinds of restaurants, etc. I wouldn't trade it for anywhere else. But the tax (RE, sales, income, city, etc etc) is killer and the rent/house prices are completely out of whack with respect to the rest of the country.
Oh well, my job is here, and my wife needs to be here for her business too. Life is a trade off, but for now, I can (barely) afford to be here. :)
It ain't cheap to live in Jersey either. That condo ain't that bad a price. Over here at the other end of the Hudson where the Newport area is the rent is $2500/month for a one bedroom apartment. Go figure.
with rent being so high, is the pay rate also inflated? I mean, do doctors in NYC make over $10 an hour?
Pay is definitely higher in NYC than other parts of the country. Heck, plumbers can make good money here! But don't expect McDonalds or Burger King to pay more though (or EB/GS for that matter).
