Which GameFan editor do you most relate to?

I don't think an arguement can be created that GF was the end all, be all, greatest magazine on the planet. A magazine can't exist without editors, and it was those editors that gave us new perspectives on gaming, forever changing us. Now, tell me what GF editor you most relate to.


I mostly relate to Eggo. He just seemed more laid back and didn't try to be as "hardcore" as ECM. In fact, the one I would LEAST relate to is ECM; rating Shenmue a 70 and saying that the best thing about MGS was the dub? Oh HELL no!!

I think it was Takuhi or *Gasp* E.Storm. There were so many times in Takuhi's previews/reviews where he would mention little things that I also thought or did. It was like he was reading my mind. I can sort of relate with E.Storm with overlooking a games flaws if the concept and design were carried out competently. I just don't go as out of the way as he does to like every game that comes out.

Then again, she reviewed mostly puzzle games so she could be real.

ECM was the reason I started reading GameFan again, didn't care much for the mag before his arrival.

ECM. Freeter took the words outta my mouth. He wasn't perfect, but he had a bunch of other great reviewers to balance that out.

Miss Demeanor was real... but she was just a girl working there who did paperwork and stuff who they would sometimes con into writing something. She wasn't bad looking, actually, for a female working at a mostly male video game magazine.

C'mon, Shidoshi. Are you going to answer the question or not?

Have you heard of her (Pamela Des Barres) book, "I'm With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie"? GREAT fucking read. I spotted an early picture of Rox while skimming through it many years ago.

Anyway, I'm gonna go with TAKUHI. A low-key shadowy figure who could nail down a games' worth without coming off as arrogant, giving the reader the necessary review details rather than dozens of inside jokes and pompous acts of 'hardcore'.

Anyway being friends with most of the staff from over the years I would have to say Knightmare is who I mostly related to when it came to gaming plus he was british like me ;).


People I got along with: Reubus,Kodomo,Dango,Ecm. Four good friends of mine but out of all the editors Ecm is my favorite friend. We would always talk about stuff other then games and we saw eye to eye.

People I didn't like Estorm and Shidoshi. Estorm long story. Shidoshi because he didn't like me and always started shit with me. :)

i guess my fav editors were mr. goo, reubus (his love for jet moto), and...that dude that did the "Japan Now" columns.

You know, we just did almost this same exact topic recently, except it was titled "Which Gamefan editor is your favorite" or somthing like that, but the result is the same. There's plenty of shit to write about, must we recycle old stuff...?

Anyway, I liked the old-skool Gamefan (before ECM came along). The mag was still great with the new crew, but there was just something about the old crew that I just clicked with. Anyway, my favs were Takuhi, because he wrote intelligent, witty, and funny reviews, and Nick Rox, because he was uber-passionate about Japanese gaming and a good writer himself, not to mention totally insane. His infamous "Blue Shadows" SFA rant is proof enough of that. Hey, what's this about his mom being a whore or groupie or something? Did she bang any famous rock stars or what?

From what I gather, it seems like a matter of who didn't she bang. IF I'm wrong I'm sorry.

Yep. Especially after the explanations that "righted" what happened, which everyone seemed to forget immediately. ECM is no scapegoat to me. His final post all but killed his credibility IMO. Sure, I don't know him like maybe 'Doshi, mattvanstone, and the others do, and I only know what was said on the GG and TNL boards (by them as well as ECM). I'm not going to go into this argument again (I never intended to). I just don't like the guy, plain and simple. You don't have to agree with that and I respect that. ;)

It's the reason for not liking him which sometimes irks me, as most misunderstood what happened (and it caused quite the fight), and I kind feel that huge amounts of hate wrongly directed for no reason was a bad thing.

I still love reading all my old GF mags, but I still feel the whole GG thing was a nice n' proper screw job.

I can understand maybe screwing over a bunch of faceless people just because your a greedy bastard. But all the crap that happened at the end of GG was above and beyond the normal level of screw jobs. I mean it basically happened to all the core people that supported and loved GG (and to the same extent GF) from day one.

I think I remember reading something on the old GG boards because Halverson was always re-writing peoples stuff, and posting it other names. Also something about making the mag look bigger than it really was.

My memory is kinda foggy about it, so if somebody else has some more reliable info please post. :)

Rage Racer - Yep, I wrote that one, and designed the car logo. Then Namco ad guys came a-callin', and the rest is history. Either that or a free advert... and speaking of adverts.

Don't know how GG came to pass. Didn't think it would last long though. Even though I'm not a fan of ECM (he's the only guy I've ever argued with during my GameFan stay - and believe me, we argued), I wished him well for the mag - but the mistake was made - you have to have advertisers to sell magazines in the US. It's different in the UK, but over here, subscribers rule, and when ECM lashed out at potential software publishing ads, I knew the mag would either go black and white, or go away.

It's a shame there's no old-school GameFan mags anymore. Me and Knightmare (and the Guvnor) came from the Mean Machines, C&VG, Official Saturn Mag school of hardcore gaming, where every taste was catered for. But as videogames has matured, the mags have become more mainstream. Fact of life.

Dolemite - Coyote huntin'? Well we did lambast a few dogs over at Gamers' Republic, and I'm thankful my persona's wander off into the sunset was handled with more dignity than E.Storm's....

There wasn't any teasing of Nick's mother - he was highly strung enough as it was - but I remember Slasher Quan getting a little bit of flack for strapping a red siren light to his head, locking his office door, and freaking out to punk music. Must-ve worked though (whatever ritual freakdown his was performing) - that guy's the president of Versus books now!

Heh, I wasn't a fan of ECM either- I thought he was an elitist, arrogant, "if you don't agree with my opinion you're an idiot" asshole. How did that rotten little dwarf get to be in charge of GF, anyway? To be honest, ANY behind-the-scenes stories you could give would be MOST welcome...I loved the old-skool version of the mag, before everyone got "killed", and any info about the mag's beginning and end would be most welcome. I've heard all the stories but it would be better from someone that was there. :)

I can't believe the crap me and Dave took because of that review. Yes, I didn't finish it, but I later did and the shitty translation didn't magically improve. Vic and WD all but ruined that game. Japanese joy melded with harsh Americana, that was. And let's not forget the hurtin' addition of having to use your magic points to save your game- I still stand by what I said in that review. Happily, they did a far better job on the recent PS version. I approve of that one, though I always try to play the Japanese releases instead, since I'm fluent in the language- pure bliss, there.

Wow, Nick Rox!! I remember you! You were one of my favorite editors, and I remember that RE 2 preview that you did(the issue with the Crash poster inside and Lara on the cover). Honestly though, Valkyrie Profile is a brilliant game and you should be very proud to have been a part of it.

Is it impossible to not love a game that was hyped up to be the END-ALL, BE-ALL game of the friggin millenium that actually turned out to be less than stellar because of a lack of real gameplay?

Never played Valkyrie Profile myself, though it looks amazing. I have to pick up a copy.

Have you done the translation for any other games, Rox? I always liked your layouts in GF back in the day. Like I asked of Hambleton, if you got any cool behind-the-scenes GF stories, lay 'em on us. I like dirt.

Wow! Nick's on the warpath! Here's a couple of points, just to clear up any misunderstanding between me and Nick.

We saw eye to eye on some things, and sometimes we didn't. I described Nick as "highly strung" because he once stayed up three days grabbing a single frame of animation for a Darkstalkers book, and then was rather upset to learn that Capcom added a "clear pause" feature to the game. This, I would attribute, to "hardcore" mentality, but this still was viewed as a little over-excitable sometimes. Hence "highly strung."

The comments about Nick's mother (all of which except for the "pulse and guitar" comment) was featured on an E! True Hollywood Story.. And correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't literature been written about P. Des Barres stating the Keith Moon and Terence Trent liaisons? Didn't she become famous for being a groupie? Remember this was in Pamela's youth, prior to Nick arriving.

"gay Brit" comments aside, I rekkenize that Nick must defend his mother. I don't consider a further investigative report into her 60s and 70s youthful transgressions to be worth mentioning.

Regarding the "career of Rox and Hambleton", I wish Nick all the luck in the world regarding his acting career. I simply stated he was doing covers for Versus books, and now isn't. Mainly because the last few Versus books covers didn't feature the trademark Roxian style.

Another yawnsome comment about "my career" isn't really going to cut it, to be honest. Self-important prickish comments aside, Nick doesn't know what I've been up to recently. If he did, he'd know that I'd recently finished my 20th strategy guide (next up is Super Mario Sunshine), write for a number of gaming and non-gaming magazines, and I've revamped the Tricks section for EGM. I do very nicely with my career at the moment, and I've no plans to change. Being bitter isn't the way we used to act to each other, but nevermind. I've not spoken to Nick in three years.

Nick, let me just say that your sig is hilarious. I remember working at Namco's Time-Out when I read that review. I almost went ballistic and spent the rest of the day in a bad mood! Looking back, I can't help but laugh at my anger. The whole controvery just seems funny as hell now.

Wow, he stayed up 3 three days?!? In a row? For a single frame? Dude, I wouldn't call that "hardcore", I'd call that "obsessive compulsive". Still, it was for a Darkstalkers book, so at least it was for a good cause. :)

Right - he was working with Ryan "Orion" Lockhart, and the sleep deprivation was getting to them.

And before I'm corrected by Nick, I meant it was for the NIGHTWARRIORS book, not the Darkstalkers (although GF did both books). Nick also secured a Japan-only T-shirt of one of the characters, and scanned it in to the artwork section.

Lunacy! (But respected lunacy, nevertheless)

All this old school gamefanness is making me al teary eyed. I like hearing stories from the inside; they're always interesting, even if they did suck for the parties involved. I would like to hear more, but completely understand if no one wants to air any dirty laundry. And forgive me if this post is running on; I'm watching Ripley's Believe it or not and there is some sick shit being shown.
