I don't see a problem with this.
Their are so many ways that people can affect the world through the internet now it's not funny. You just have to go out and try. Good choice Time.
Unless this is a "hey, lets hate time magazine, becuase its time magazine" thing. In which case just ignore what i posted.
I suppose it's trying to emphasize that the internet is a much greater equalizer. Those who would otherwise not have the chance to influence people on such a massive scale suddenly have the power to do so, creating online celebrities within hours of their spectacle and reaching further than anyone could have hoped, and practically for free.
I don't think it's appropriate in this case to pigeonhole that phenomenon into the "person of the year award," though. But I see what they were trying to go for.
Didn't they give Bush a Person of the Year award?
TIME, WHAT IS TIME
I wish I knew how to tell You why
It hurts to know
Aren't we machines
TIME WHAT IS TIME
Unlock the door
And see the truth
THEN TIME IS TIME AGAIN
It really does seem like Time thought it'd be all CONTROVERSIAL and they'd get so much attention for it!
...but, nobody cares, really. "Oh, it's 'me'? Heh, weird," is what they'll say, and then continue to pack their groceries up on the conveyor belt.
gg guys
Next article will say "JUST KIDDING we don't really care about you!"
My guess is that they initially chose Kim Jong Il, but then after seeing how horrible the cover would have been they decided to go with a spur of the moment choice.
Am I the only one who upon hearing this thought about the Time Person of the Year mirror from The Big Lebowski?
I don't see anything wrong with the article. It speaks a lot of truth and there are plenty of examples to use to support the choice.
Remember that man who started a blog because his friend's Sidekick was not being returned? He got the police off of their ass and has the support of major news networks in the country. Being able to use the internet to get justice done is a lot better than having the masses riot in the street.
And what about the Korean (I think) who played that classical song on his guitar (I think it was a Mozart but I could be mistaken) and gained internet fame from it? From a musician's standpoint it was amazing. Not many people can play the guitar like that and those who can deserve recognition no matter what part of the world they're hiding at.
And what about those blogs? They have been growing in influence so much that corporations such as McDonalds and major motion picture studios have been making shill blogs to entice people to purchase their products. It's also making people aware of what is really happening in the world.
So yeah, I think it's a good choice. The internet has made it a lot harder to keep information away from the masses and gives it to us in its raw form. I don't see a reason to hate.
