Though, you don't think any good has come out of a community of believers? What about small homeless shelters and other selfless acts?

Pat doesn't seem to know, no. I really don't know how he justifies the things Opaque brought up but he truly does tend to buy into his own bullshit. I worked on the property for a couple of years that ran over 9/11. Not in a position to have intimate access (lolz) but enough to just see the man with those closest. He seems to buy into it, his son Gordon seems to have figured out his dad is nuts and is just a complete dick going along with things for the cash, though.

Robertson has a completely overinflated sense of self importance too. All over the property roadblocks and checkpoints popped up after 9/11. It got pretty nuts. And the man basically has his own nutjob secret service. My first experience with which was when my mom worked there and brought an old girlfriend and I to the employee picnic. We walked about 100 yards away to pet his horses and in about a minute white trucks rolled up with armed men who told us to move back toward the picnic area. Later during my time working there one of the gun toting crazies put his hand on my shoulder and called me a "brother of the blessed family."

The moral is, don't always assume these guys are just conmen because when you let your guard down like that, things get creepy.

Honestly I've believe ol'Pat if he'd actually attatch some numbers to his predictions. Saying hurricanes in florida or earthquakes in cali is like saying: "It'll rain on a Wensday this year."

Honestly I don't feel sorry for pat or his followers. They use fear like a big warm blanket to comfort themselves. Bad things (hurricanes, terrorism, quakes) happen to evil people (fags, democrats, rinos), blah blah blah.

Whatever, I'm relieved that the man is predicting quakes and hurricanes as oposed to "predicting" that Homosexual Centers and Bars shall be purified by the Holy.

Good post.

Religion is fine, including organized religion, but it should be a substitute for asking questions, and being able to discuss multiple sides of an issue or question whether your leader is a bag of shit.

Religion is dangerous when you're afraid to question it. When it develops into the kind of superstition where you feel guilty for doubting. The ability to doubt is what makes us human.

It would be a pretty simple argument for me to win if everyone believed what these degenerates said. If all catholics in this country felt how Robertson feel's about gays, we'd have an extermination on our hands the likes of which hasn't been seen since the Nazi's.

But there are those who pick and choose what they believe, and those smart enough to know that the conversation is between them and their God, even if its the stand they choose to take to ignore the contradictions of their religion from the outside. But those people aren't who we are talking about here.

If you look at all successful organized beliefs throughout this world's history, you will start to see a truly sickening pattern of extremism and fundamentalism almost always takes grip with a good amount of those people, and that fundamentalism is almost always because someone at the top is using people's beliefs to manipulate them into some perverse version of the text that those people have simply lost either the will or the ability to interpret themselves.

So does the good in it outweigh the bad? Sure, for now.

But maybe only for now.

Religion is always dangerous because it supports accepting unscientific beliefs without any kind of skepticism. Believing that there are things in the world we should accept without evidence is a mistake that hurts us all.
