The fact they are a ridiculous $1,800-$2,200?
I'm not going to get into a PC/Mac debate. I know what I want and why I want it and I don't really give a shit about a few hundred dollars.
There is never really a good time to buy anything, if you think about it.
Nope, no reason. Buy me one as well.
Now's as good a time as any since they just updated. I wish I could afford one myself.
Sorry, but this isn't a PC debate despite the fact you're trying to goad me into something. Notice the original question said nothing about $.
No, the question you asked was for a reason not to get the MacBook Pro, and barring some freak issue (like how the cases would turn orange a couple generation back), price really is the main deciding factor in getting a Mac.
See the "(....)"? The point was that I don't want to get a new MBP if there's another generation coming out soon, if the next wave is going to include blu-ray, if the Macs are switching to a different chip (like PPC->Intel, etc...), if there's some revolutionary new screen or battery life, etc...
Price isn't an issue for me and I'm out of the loop on Mac news/rumors.
I thought you were saying they just added a new model/features, I'm out of the loop, too. >_>
http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
Basically it says to get one since they just updated to the i5 or i7 or some stupid named processors. This applies to the 15"+ (the 13 didn't get the processor upgrade AFAIK).
On a side note, when owning a computer stopped being about having the latest videocard or fastest timings on my RAM I stopped caring what was inside the box as long as it worked. I like it this way better. Yay Macs!
So a bunch of iPhone 4 screens are being shipped with freakish urine colored stains, either in splotches near the sides or corners or whole strips from one side to another. It's a fairly widespread shit-fest. If you encounter this when you pick yours up tomorrow, yes, it's a hardware flaw, it is not gonna go away, and call an Apple Store where they will tell you to fuck off for a few days/weeks until you get a new one.

Never be first in line for new technology.
Apparently if you get a bumper case (or any case that covers the edges) it fixes the issue. Shit design, though, I saw them doing it live on TWiT.tv today.
I don't see how it shipped out the door without them ever knowing. Or they just didn't care.
Hence why they created the little bumper case that covers only the edges of the phone. They totally knew about it.

But to know about it and hope all lefty's would buy a case? Chance all this bad PR? Although I have yet to hear anything on the news, just the internet for now.
I read that it happens to the other phones now too since the OS4 update. WTF. Weird. Though I have zero issues with mine. But I do have a case around it.
Engadget has some hilarious shit on it. Apple knows about, reps are telling people they can just buy an Official Apple Bumper case. Someone sent Gates an email about it and got the reply, "Don't hold the phone that way." Then they noticed that in just every promo pic for the new phone, the person is holding it "the wrong way".
Steve Gates, head of Apple$oft?
Well it's not like we have any Jobs available.
HO HO I'm so clever.
We can't do any wrong, we were just using an outdated formula. Your bars are wrong!
LOL Apple
What's funny?
Apple.
I don't know what's wrong with people. My phone works fine. Corporate counter-publicity bullshit imo.
Oh and the screen is amazing, the CPU/RAM is quick, the camera shoots decent video and the interface is (still) a pleasure to use. All this plus apps that aren't total shit makes me happy.
Developers need to release new versions of the apps with higher res art, though. SimCity runs like a champ but the graphics and text are gross.
Oh and more (custom!) sounds for the alerts pls appl.
Yeah WTF is with people. I got mine and it seems great so far. No yellow pee, no lost bars by holding(without case). I even tried to make it lose bars too. Weird. I really like it so far. The screen actually makes the 3GS screen look fuzzy side by side. I enjoy the new box feel to it. More edge to hang on to. I really didn't need this but whatever. Six nailed my other thoughts. Also, holy fast shipping. I ordered Friday and got it yesterday(Tue) I wasn't expecting it for at least a month. Ordered from AT&Ts via my account online FYI. Now I need a case. Hurry up Otterbox.
I actually noticed today that I can make my 3GS go from 5 to 1 bar by holding it differently, and my old LG Viewty is the same.
Yeah, but when tested the actual data loss on the iPhone 4 is greater. People are suspecting a manufacturing issue is to blame, which explains why some have perfectly functioning phones, and others have shit ones. This issue is definitely real, and I can confirm since I worked for this company for like 7 years, and 99% of my friends are people who still work there. It's a bit of a nightmare.
It's not just a case of "OMG BRING DOWN THE MAN," as people who defended Apple to the grave are now actually a bit upset.
I noticed that I actually get better reception with the new phone. In places that I would go from 1 bar to no service I'm now getting 1-2 bars all the time with no loss of service. Nice. Also the screen is indeed fantastic. The more I use it the more I like it. Bought a cheap ass case for it until Otterbox pumps some out. I want port plugs!

Apple: Melt Different.
I went through that page and clicked like + on the shit that everyone hated and like - on everything that people liked.
I'm so counterculture.
Can we not get anymore retarded links?
never
Look what snuck into the latest iTunes update:

Organize and sync PDF documents as books. Read PDFs with iBooks 1.1 on iPad and any iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4
Oh shits
Whats the deal with the default permissions when sharing files between multiple users in OSX? Shit always defaults to Owner -> Read/Write and Group -> Read only, which means if I want my coworker to be able to come in and access any files I created the day before, I have to go in and set the permissions manually on every file. Anyone have any experience with this bullshit? Most of what I'm reading says "LOL, this has been a problem for years. You're SOL. GO APPLE."
Wait, people use Macs for business?
When your business wants to pay people to draw stupid pictures and do easy design work, then yes they do!
I guess no one told them that the adobe suite runs on PCs too... PCs that cost half the price.
Aha. I didn't know you were one of those guys, along with seemingly half of TNL.
Well... my job's a little bit different.
He draws oranges with teeth rampaging down city streets!
Just got an iphone, fellow users please recommend me any must have apps.
Don't need game recs, I have an ipod touch so I know about those, I'm looking for other types of apps.
Shazam
My piece of shit Toshiba just wasn't cutting it anymore; I decided to sell my soul to Mr. Jobs and pick up a MacBook Pro last night. So far it has been great, even if it sometimes feels like I'm learning to walk all over again (outside of a couple minutes here and there, I have pretty much no experience with a Mac).
Outside of the growing pains, the experience has been unlike anything I've had with a computer before. Everything feels right and looks sexy. Worth every dollar, in my opinion.
Exit question for Mac owners: What software do you strongly recommend that I download? I could really use a decent word processor, and BitTorrent isn't acting right--but I chalk the latter up to my still learning the ins and outs of this beautiful machine.
My main apps are:
Writing: TextEdit. Comes free with every Mac, and honestly, does everything I need 99% of the time (even reading most Word documents). I love how stripped down it is, especially in plain text mode - it's just a window with a titlebar and that's it. The only thing it doesn't do that I often need are word count and sorting, the first of which I get around by using an app called Word Counter. TextEdit + Google Docs pretty much satisfies my needs. If you want something more powerful, though, I'd recommend looking at Apple's iWork suite. $42 on Amazon gets you Pages (word processor + basic layout), Numbers (spreadsheet), and Keynote (presentations).
BitTorrent: Transmittion. Lightweight, easy to use, and has that "Mac style" going on. Definitely my preferred BT app on the Mac.
FTP: Cyberduck. I don't really think it's the best, but it has one great feature: it's free. The price combined with it being good enough makes it my typical go-to choice. Other great apps if you're willing to pay money are Transmit and Flow.
IM: Adium. I honestly don't love-love it, and for some reason prefer using Apple's own iChat, but Adium (a) works with damn near every IM protocol out there, and (b) is customizable to a ridiculous degree. Tons of downloadable skins, extensions, and what not: really, if you can't make Adium look and feel the way you want, you aren't trying hard enough. It also has a very detailed chat logger - something I absolutely need - but unfortunately it's also a bit flakey. Main downsides are it can be brutal in its refusal to work properly with file transfers at times, and if you want to do voice/video chat with somebody you'll be far better off firing up the dedicated app for doing so.
Video playback: It's a very divisive issue among Mac users, but I personally like Apple's QuickTime Player. The problem, though, is that they completely re-wrote the app for Mac OS X 10.6, which would normally be a good thing (especially since the old QTP was long out of date), but in doing so they stripped a bunch of functions out and also pretty much broke every plug-in that previously existed. They can still be used if they're installed for the old version of QTP (QuickTime Player 7), and then QuickTime Player X will basically import the video into the new player via the old one. If you go this route, you'll want to install Perian - it's a plug-in that allows QuickTime to play far more than it's usually capable of. This is important no matter what, really, because QT is the code base used for OSX's overall media playback. So, installing Perian helps in a wide variety of ways. Otherwise, I really like MediaPlayer OSX Extended, and of course there's also VLC (though I'm not much of a fan).
Just a few ideas offhand. Are there any specific app types that you're looking for?
I <3 Pages, I write everything in that, even notes. You can do so much with organization & visual presentation. iWork is well worth the money. You'll never want to look at another clunky Excel sheet again.
This is an amazing free program that I love to death: Journler. It does what it does so well. The most useable and easily customizable way to keep a journal and random writings I've come across, it even lets you embed other media so you know what you were listening to/watching at the time. I find the whole thing comfortable.
For media playback I use a combination of VLC & Quicktime. Sometimes MPlayer OSX, which handles some weird old stuff well. All things being equal Quicktime has the nicest interface, but VLC has the functionality edge imo.
UnrarX & Zipeg take care of most all my compression needs with no fuss. D-Vision comes in handy to join avi files (everybody says quicktime does this, but I can never make it happen).
Transmission is the torrent client for Mac. There doesn't seem to be any debate over that.
Among other things, Deskshade will lock your desktop or hide everything on it, and keep a log of login attempts while you're away.
Freedom is pretty much the essential productivity tool - it shuts of your internet connection for a specified time. You can't get it back before time is up unless you restart the machine. This is a fantastic little app when you're in a crunch, or just find yourself wasting too much time online and can't break the habit.
For web browsing I go back and forth between Safari & Chrome. Despite them both being built off Webkit, in real use Chrome seems faster and works with more sites (still occasionally run across things that don't like Safari). It also has a bunch of stuff built in like wiki searches from the toolbar that Safari doesn't without extensions. But that said, I find Safari nicer to look at, which is why I put up with it. I'm hoping Apple gives it a serious overhaul soon.
Transmission can suck a dick. I use uTorrent. Quicktime can also suck a dick, VLC is still the standard.
I browse with Chrome, unless I want to stream Netflix... then I use Safari.
It pissed me off once upon a time.
They've actually done a pretty good job with regular updates. .part files are great, I love the fact that you can still watch something that you only got 98.7% of.
I don't know, I think VLC is easily my last choice when it comes to video playback. I seem to have more incompatibility issues with VLC and various video files than I do with QuickTime Player + Perian. If you're not going with QTP, then MPlayer OSX Extended is by far the better choice in my mind. But hey, both it and VLC are free, so download them both and keep them around in case one isn't doing what you need.
For unarchiving I use a product named, wacky enough, The Unarchiver. Typically works great for everything I throw at it.
Q: Anybody got a working 3rd gen iPod kicking around that's not getting any use? I may want to talk to you.
I do, but now that you've asked I'm going to sell it to someone else.
Okay, I downloaded Journlr. It looks like a nice app, but I'm not sure how handy it would be for practical purposes. I mean, it looks like a blog that is completely offline, which sort of defeats the purpose. But maybe I'm just not seeing it right. What do you use it for?
Also, big thanks to doshi... I downloaded pretty much everything you recommended, and I am a happy camper. It is hard as hell to get American TV shows over here, and I was worried that I would have to boot up the overheating laptop of death to get my fix. As for word processing, I will give TextEdit a fair chance. I was initially taken aback by how barebones it looked. But appearances can be deceiving, and if it works well for the few things I need it to do, that's enough for me.
The only thing I still need help with isn't exactly appropriate for discussion here. I'll take it over to the usual place tomorrow.
Overall, I'm already glad I made the switch. The OS goes beyond intuitive--it's downright fun. This trackpad is so intuitive that I simply cannot entertain the thought of going back. Everything moves fast, and the Internet has never looked better. I like that Chrome for Mac has a dedicated bookmark button (something that was sorely lacking on my PC). Also, I downloaded a really neat Zelda-themed plugin for Adium (triforce when offline, ocarina when online, heart container for new messages, etc.). And I still have so much to learn. It's like every time I log on, there is something else just waiting to impress me. The Mac hype is warranted; consider me both convinced and converted. I can't remember the last time I had this much fun with a computer.
Okay, that's enough geek orgasm for tonight.
Keeping a journal?
It's also good for just random jottings, you can keep a list of folders on the side - book ideas, random quotes, thoughts sorted by subject (philosophical, etc.). You can change the background and font to whatever colour you'd like, for instance I've got blue background and white type which makes for a comfortable writing environment.
It's not revolutionary, but I quite like it for what it does. Much nicer than just a sterile document folder.
Hmm.... when you put it that way, I can see myself using it for rough drafts, ideas and brainstorming, etc. It would certainly beat having a bunch of stray items in my documents folder.
No comments on the Apple press conference today?
Was hoping for Cloud itunes, not just some stupid social networking thing.
Next year I plan to get a 64gb iPod Touch. The Nanos are interesting. The Shuffle's redesign shows Apple's willingness to acknowledge when they screw up.
Stoked about 4.2 hitting the iPad. The new iPod Touch is dead sexy too.
AppleTV seems too little too late. I have 3 devices in the house that can already stream the providers, and I've got my WDTVHD hooked to my 320gb hard drive. The price is right though.
But I want cloud itunes goddammit.
Time Capsule + Mobile Me account = Cloud iTunes. Suck it.
I think it takes peoples monies from the Apple Store which is all they really care about.
The only thing it has going for it is the interface.
Oh just like everything else Apple makes!
itt: big dick windows niggers.
Big Nick Digger.
Anybody set up ping?
Look for Charles Forrester or go fuck yourself.
any relation to robert forrester?
I had an Uncle Robert, but he was on my mom's side, so I'd assume no.
sadddddddddddddddddddddddd
any relation to subaru forrester?
New iTunes still doesn't support Aero and therefor still runs like shit in Windows.
I love the features of iTunes but hate apple for 5 years later still not making it compatible.
Anyone got a link to the 4.2 beta for iPad? I want folders on the thing like fire.
Edit: found a bunch of torrents, but the dev build requires a registered UDID to work. Looks like I may have to renew my developer account.
UGH I NEED THAT SHIT YO.
This is news
Well, I ended up renewing my dev account. If you send me your UDID I can add it to my account and the beta will run on your device. Use the free app 'Ad-Hoc Helper' on your ipad to get your UDID.
edit: Installing 4.2 right now. Bear in mind - if 4.2 fucks your iPad (no reason it would, but shit, you never know) you CANNOT downgrade it back to the release version. Restoring the Beta would probably fix whatever, but I thought I should put that out there.
Also, after Josh and another of my friends, I have 98 slots on my account for dev certificates. If you want in, PM/Email me your name and UDID and I'll add it (that goes for iPhone/iPod too, though I dunno why you'd want 4.2 RIGHT NOW! for those devices).
For the 7th straight year, people are happier with their Macs than their counterparts are happy with their PC: http://money.cnn.com/2010/09/21/tech...pt=Sbin&hpt=T2
You use an iPhone and you like it. Why is it so difficult for you when people use a Mac and like it?
Because it's a 180 degree turn from the iPhone. The openness, flexibility, software selection, etc. that are on iPhone are all PC-like and not Mac-like.
I assume you're referring to a jailbroken iPhone. Right?
Because otherwise, I think you're a retard, or at least talking from your asshole.
Jailbreaking expands all of those things, but due to the support it gets, even the standard issue is well better than the Macs in those areas from my experience. Now if Android continues to close the gap on support, the whole game may change, but for now the iPhone is clearly the best of breed in my opinion.
There is virtually NO openness to iOS if it's not jailbroken.
OSX is fine. Windows 7 is fine. Get fucked yoshi.
Old biases die hard.
