I updated my iPad and iPhone at the office today. The speed improvements to the browser seem to help huge in scrolling through a page--I'm barely seeing the empty checkered loading spaces at all anymore, which is divine.
Read Engadget's review of the iPad 2 and...that camera is abysmal. I understand that the likelihood is low that I'll use the iPad as a point-and-shoot like I do with my phone but it still seems a waste to put shitty cameras on the thing when iPhone has a great camera. The hardware looks really nice but I'm definitely not motivated to upgrade.

I don't think the update goes live for everyone until tomorrow. It's slowly being trickled out to some though from what I've read.

Everytime I've used Steam or anything PC-gaming oriented it's always been suck dicks. I am seeing the exact same thing happen with Android vs. iOS. Whenever I read about Android it always seems like everyone is waiting for the next great new OS update named after a dessert that will make everything better. Then it comes out and oh, it's fine but wait it got all this weird crud floating around so the next OS update will fix that. As long as it comes to your phone, of course.
Look at the Xoom. Shit just came out yet half the stuff they were blabbing about doesn't work. "it's coming later" - fuck off.

Everyone is always looking to the next version of anything. I was certainly looking forward to iOS 4 after being stuck with 3.2 or whatever until November of last year on iPad.
To me, Android is a better platform for phones. Widgets and the notifications alone put it above iPhone, but there are little things like being able to share links and info between apps, eg. sharing a YouTube link directly to Twitter or AndChat without having to compose an e-mail, copy the link, discard the email, go to the other app, and then paste. I like being able to see whose call I missed from the lock screen and having a notification LED. It feels like Apple's been coasting for a couple years now.
For tablets, I think Honeycomb needs more time in the oven. Once the kinks are worked out, it looks pretty nice. My feeling is eventually I'll switch from iPad to Android, but not before 2012. iOS 5 needs to really hit it out of the park. Double clicking the home button to get to open apps is possibly the most cumbersome UI I've ever seen from Apple.
Good post, Schlep. I love that iOS runs silky smooth, it's an underrated factor in the usefulness of a device. My experience with Android is limited but from what I've seen it's not as smooth, at least not with the separate manuacturers' layers on top (Sense, Moto Blur, etc.) I'd've gone Android if Nexus S was available somewhere other than T Mobile, mostly because I want to try Android and already have an iOS device. That said, I'm not convinced I'd be happier with an Android phone. The UI isn't great.
I agree that Apple's been coasting on functionality, the notifications need to change and double-clicking the home button IS clumsy as all fuck for an Apple interface. And I agree that Android tablets aren't there yet, they need way more app support before they can rival iPad. The UI for Honeycomb is ugly as shit, too.
Depends what you mean by kinks. If you mean that it will do what they say it did, maybe. But it will always be a device for people who like to tweak/fiddle/install/experiment/etc. It's for the computer nerds. That's just the nature of Android.Quote:

He started playing with an iPad when he was 1 and a half and has had his own since he turned 2. After nearly a year, he can count to 30, understands very basic math, spells his full name, reads and writes the alphabet and speaks rudimentary spanish. At two and a half. People haven't really cottoned on to just how incredible these devices are for early childhood development, but it's fucking amazing. I'll be getting him another one, and any and all of my other future kids are all getting them as well.
I still can't update my iPad. What the shit, man.

Apple has been pissing me off with these system update issues lately. I upgraded to an iPhone 4 and couldn't sync it cause my macbook had Tiger, and the new iTunes wont run on a 3 year old Apple, but it will run on any windows PC within the last 5 years. BS.

Btw, I messed around with "appstart" last night. Anyone who is noob to iPads should download it and have a go.
But it runs pretty bad on any PC. I got the 64-bit distro and it feels like a bloated mess. It's a lot better then when they first put iTunes on PC but it still has a ways to go. I think iTunes in general (regardless of platform) could use an overhaul. They've been tacking on for too long now. On another note I just got my email from Wal-Mart that my iPad 2 is in. Anyway, I took my son's shattered iPad into the local Apple store on Saturday. Dude was like "So Tom, what's the problem with your iPad?" And I was all "Check it!".
Told me that obviously a drop-smash isn't covered by manufacturer's warranty and I'd have to pay $399 to replace it "but fuck it, the kid's two, we'll swap it out for you for nothing". My friend who works at an Apple Store said that generally, they'll give you a free swap once per device/warranty, which is actually pretty fucking great. That iPad had a month of warranty left on it. Dude also suggested that I give Oscar my iPad (which has another 8 months warranty) and I keep the replacement, just in case it happens again.
I also took in my in-ear buds which I had sweat into and killed the in-line control/mic, and he swapped them out without even taking them out of the box.
As creepy as those stores are, they really do take care of their customers.
I'm waiting a couple months but will be swapping out my iPad. The backlight bleed is terrible.
Ughh, those are horrible. If you don't mind spending a bit on headphones, I'd recommend the Klipsch Image S5i Rugged. They have all of the features of the Apple one, but are extremely durable, have great sound and isolation, and will stay in your ears. Klipsch promoted them by submerging the remote/mic part in water, and it still worked fine.Quote:

I went to an Apple Store just to ask if my iPod's warranty was valid to cover my damage (it'd been dropped/crushed a lot and the harddrive was messing up) and they wanted me to schedule an appointment for two hours later just to look at it. I'm sure they're much nicer if you've bought a fleet from them, though.

I downloaded Office 2011 for Mac and it's way better than 2008, mostly thanks to the ribbon. At least it looks like MS is trying this time around.
Protip: On your iOS device, hold down the power button until you get the power off screen. Instead of powering off, press and hold the Home button until the power off screen fades away. Your shit runs smoother now.
I notice a significant difference in web browser performance after this. I think it clears RAM, which is likely why tabbed browsing is less likely to need a refresh when switching tabs.

Google. I felt my iPad was performing worse than usual but resetting the iPad and clearing the app switcher didn't help so I looked up "clear iPad RAM" and came up with that.
I used to power it down and then back up to accomplish the same thing, so that is a welcome tip.
If you're jailbroken, one of the many awesome aspects of SBSSettings is the "free up ram" button.
Is there a real reason to jailbreak? Is there a reason not to?
