"Only bigger studios can afford Blu-ray, and even then it's not economical," we were told.

In a rather surprising move, primary HD DVD backer Universal Studios Home Entertainment confirmed today that they will be making no major title announcements at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, despite the formidable presence of all major studios supporting rival format Blu-ray.

Universal, the sole major Hollywood studio to be supporting HD DVD exclusively, was expected to bringing out its big guns for 2007 at CES -- or at least make enough new announcements to dazzle the early adopters who have been passionately backing the format thus far.

But when we contacted Universal to find out if anything further is to come from the studio out of CES, they confirmed they will not be unveiling any new street dates or detailed title info at all for the duration of the show. The studio stressed that they continue to support HD DVD and are planning to announce new titles "throughout 2007."

We must say, it seems like a strange promotional strategy to arrive at CES with nothing to brag about, especially given the highly visible nature of the show in the mainstream media, and that Blu-ray's showing has been quite muscular.

To be fair, a promotional flyer has been issued to the press and is available on the show floor, listing several notable HD DVD titles expected from Universal over the coming year, though many were already bandied about by Universal at last year's CES. Among the hits due in in 2007 are: 'The 40 Year-Old Virgin,' 'American Pie,' Bruce Almighty,' the 2003 remake of 'Dawn of the Dead,' 'Pride & Prejudice,' the original 'The Bourne Identity' and 'Inside Man.'

We'll keep you posted in the coming weeks and months as Universal officially announces street dates for these titles and more. We've also added all of the titles listed above to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our HD DVD Release Schedule.

Actually it really doesn't matter to me who wins seeing as I own both players, but if I had to pick a loser, I would wish for it to be Sony. Honestly though, I don't think either is going to lose. Once we see the introduction of hybrid players to market, and they get ow enough in price, I am sure most people will pick that. Why have only half or a third of HD movies to chose from when you can have them all.

Beta Max died because Sony made the mistake of not taking RCA up on compromising video quality to increase tape length. It's hard to sell 2 hour movies on 1 hour cassettes.

Save for Universal, you DO have them all on Blu-Ray. On HD-DVD you're missing out on the entire libraries of Sony's studios, Disney/Pixar, and Fox. Yes, format wars suck, but why not support the format that actually has more movies and better technology? Or is your dislike of one large corporation really more important to you?

You can do what you want with their projection, but the data up until a week into January is correct. Blu-Ray has surpassed HD DVD already, despite the lack of the DVD brand recognition, a late, terribly-received launch, an initial title disadvantage, and a massive amount of FUD by Internet nerds with a Sony-hating hard on. And this is without the massive title advantage Blu-Ray is going to have very quickly this year. It's already ahead by 13 titles.

Funny Warner announced that they will now support both brands and released a format Total HD. Which is both.

Did you miss the part where I say I have both types of players? It really doesn't matter to me which one fails, as I can watch wither one, but Blu-Rays prices are bullshit and you are a tool if you don't admit. Why the hell would I want to pay goddamn $35 for transporter, transporter 2, ice age, and other movies? the most HD DVDs go for is $30 which is very rare, and $40 for the combo discs which is eve rarer.

I honestly dont think porn is going to make as big as an impact as it has. The internet has made it so much more private and easier to do. Thats exactly what the did. Theres an R rated version and the actual porn version. I guess to try and recoup the costs of the most expensive porn ever and show that they have “gripping stories” with it, they slashed out any type of penetration and released it as an R-rated disc to sell mainstream.

The Fox chart that Andy posted above was getting a lot of attention at AVS Forum, because it's supposedly a prediction chart for 2010-2011.

Additionally, I'd support Blu Ray over HD DVD if its features were at the same quality. HD DVD's PIP support and interactive features are pretty badass, and while BDJava can apparently replicate the same features, it hasn't yet. In fact, releases like The Descent and Crank just use two different encodes of the movie for PIP support, negating the space advantage entirely. I'm all about HD content, so it aggravates me that studios are generally putting no effort into the more supported format.

I'm not sure about the other companies in that pic, but Apple's yet to release any product with a Bluray drive in it. Even the new Apple tv doesn't have a Bluray drive.

LOL, those are pretty bad. Fith Element is a great movie, but they used a shitty transfer because they are lazy. My favorite BD movie I have is The Big Hit, but the best looking by far is Ice Age 2 mainly cause it is all digital. There are some good titles to look forward to, but same can be said about HD DVD.

I think it right here, right now. Torrenting is huge and HDD are becoming less expensive all the time. The dl speeds are bad, but people I think are willing to wait. the dl speeds are only getting faster while torrenting is done by more and more people.

All it needs is the last peice of the puzzle, a device that will connect the media from your PC to your TV in a cheap, easy to use way that doesn't rely on using certain codecs (windows media center). If someone can release that device to the mainstream then they might have something.

Until then most people I think will stick to dvd. This is ancedotal, but no one I have ever met off the internet has given a shit about HD-DVD or BR. I think for most people that will be the case, and this "war" is being fought over the elitist videophiles, not the majority of people who just want to watch a movie.

But what do I know. I don't really follow this stuff so much.

Torrenting is a horrible and painfully slow way of downloading anything. HDDs aren't yet to the capacity where one can have a library of movies. We've been over this here though. The Key points were this, 1080p movies in a good bitrate are fucking HUGE, you're talking 15 - 20 gigs per movie. If you had 50 movies you're looking at 1 terabyte of storage, which is far far far from affordable right now. and thats for 50 movies, I have a 200 movie library. And again download speeds with news groups I can usually hit 1.1 - 1.5 megs a second which for right now is pretty damn good but it would still take 3 1/2 - 5 hours to download a full 1080p movie. Physical media just offers a higher quality picture and sound level than you can get with downloading. It will be that way for awhile too I bet. I built a home theater PC to play HD movies I download and most of them are in h264 format, 720p, and about 6 - 7mbps data rate. They look good, no where's near as good as full 1080p movies at like really nice and high bitrates like you get on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD though.

Isn't Blu-Ray still more expensive before those are released? Not to mention that movies aren't filling 50GB in the first place?

The point is price. HD-DVDs were not getting pushed forward because a large part of the intent was to keep production costs as close to normal DVDs as possible, and if they continue to maintain such costs it'll mean a huge hit to Sony in terms of companies that produce consumer media. In turn that will fall to us, especially as costs are recouped (which will be quicker in the first place for HD-DVD). 200GB Blu-Ray discs are awesome but are at least currently useless for individual movies, require a completely different type of creation and reading, and have higher costs then the current higher costs.

Does this guarantee anything? No. Are the larger discs (of either format) definately coming out for us? No. Can the current players read any of the larger formats? Who knows. So what I was saying was: Sony's primary competitor is prepping to try and release a cheaper equal.

A single movie may not be able to fill that space, but all of Star Wars or an entire season of 24 on one disc would be the hot sex.

Aren't holographic drives already done but cost $15k? I swear I read that in a magazine.

Even with Sony's movie studio backing - during Christmas they were selling the floor model Toshiba HD DVD player at Best Buy for $300 (normally $500 new)! The cheapest Blue Ray player was $800. And with the $200 Microsoft X360/PC HD DVD drive, Blue Ray needs to lower their hardware costs fast or it is going to take a hit. Adult industry supporting HD DVD isn't good for them either.

The extra storage space is irrevelant unless Sony and their backers actually get the players into homes.......

Blu-Ray up to this point has heavily been associated with PS3.

Disney is probably exerting lots of pressure as well. With any new format there's limited releases, and Disney's worst nightmare is probably some parent walking into the video store to check out the Blu-Ray discs and making any sort of connection between Disney and porn. Disney gets hammered by watchdog activist groups every time some stoner thinks they see a cloud shaped like cock in a cartoon.

yeah I'm pretty sure that's false seeing as there is already bluray porn out there and seeing as there's more companies than sony backing the format the decision ultimately won't be up to them, even if they co-created it

probably not, I'd wager that the porno industry over here is going with hddvd because it's cheaper to produce the media, not because of some phony ban on what kind of content is allowed on bluray

This probably isn't the main reason, but I'm sure it's a big factor. Disney so far is supporting Blu-Ray by itself, which sucks for me because I'd love to see The Incredibles in HD, but oh well.

LG's Dual format player is going to be 1199.99. Man I was hoping to buy this so I could get the best of everything but that's just too damn expensive. They need to bring that price down if they hope to solve the format wars for consumers like they said in some CES interview.
