Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI

I didn't know this was coming out already, but it ships Feb. 6th. Which sucks, because I've been demolishing my pile of shame recently and this is totally going to derail that.

Game's been redone in 3D, so now it almost looks like PS2 level graphics. Almost:

They're back to letting you start as a ruler, whch is good - they should just give the option of starting out as a flunky rather than making you work your way up.

Anyway, I've been taking break form the series since VIII, I'm ready for another one so I'll be checking it out to see what they've done with it over the last three iterations.

Looks nice, I still need to play VII, IX and X. I shouldn't even buy these since they take so long to play.

Not really, they're all pretty much the same. I'd just go with this one, reports of people who've played the Asian version have been pretty favourable.

Honestly I think X looks better graphically. I loved the art style even if it wasn't remotely impressive in a technical sense, but this looks kind of clunky.

Hopefully it'll play as well as or better than X, though.

Nah. They've fallen into a pattern where the odd numbered ones play differently from the even ones. As X was 'play as whoever you want, do what you want,' and XI 'you're the ruler now, dawg.'

X was a fantastic game overall, but the poor enemy AI and the difficulty of managing an empire near the end brought the whole thing down. I got to the point where I could not lose a battle, but it was a pain to place and watch over so many armies and generals.

Yeah, I've read this one decribed as IX on steroids.

No, they added super moves & parrying. It's totally different now.

No, they do switch stuff up in ways that do dramatically affect how it's played.

Not any more than the Civilization games. The basic concept and players never really change but the rules and things the player is allowed to do are altered pretty heavily from one game to the next.
