Notre Dame never closes. One time we had a three day ice storm and the whole town lost power, including my off campus apt. The school has its own power plant, snow removal, etc. So they didn't close.
My current job won't close for weather because it's in cali so that's never a prob. They don't even close for second tier holidays (no MLK holiday). We do have a crisis # on our badges most likely for earthquakes but that hasn't happened yet. My job sucks :(
Apple closed yesterday because of really bad ice, but decided to stay open today...even though the ice is far worse. Nice!
My university closes if there's no water (for the bathrooms) or if the lights go out. I had that happen last semester. I had 6 hours off between classes, went home, went back to give my last evening class only to find it was cancelled because there was no electricity.
Snow removal in MD is pretty shitty, so back in the day we got a decent number of school closings. We had one really nasty ice storm in IIRC 93 that shut down the whole state pretty much for almost a week and a half. I don't even think it's gonna snow in MD this year except for a few flurries. We've had some extremely unusual warm weather here on the east coast.
If you want days off for nothing go work in the public sector.

The area of Virginia I'm from sucks shit for snow since it's surrounded by warmish water. It would snow balls on the other side of the river and we would get rain, it sucked ass. But on the bright side, if it snowed hardly at all schools would shut down because I think the city of Chesapeake has maybe three snow plows. Once in, I want to say 2000/2001 maybe it snowed a shit load and then freezing rain on top of that, then more snow. So it was a few inches of snow on top of six inches of ice. The neighborhood streets were covered for over a week, it was amazing.
As for college, classes will close if we get a couple inches of snow-it's more than it took at home because I'm further west and it gets cold as balls in the valley, but we have good years and bad. Last year it snowed a ton during exam week and I didn't have to take my French final, it was like a gift from God. But this year so far we haven't had anything besides a dusting last week. Here's hoping.
If we have a power out, stuff gets closed.
