John Lithgow and SkeletorRita FINALLY getting killed were the only two things about this season that were worth a shit. Dexter as a family man with feelings just doesn't work at all. That's what I initially loved about the show was his constant struggle just to be normal. And the fact that they totally glossed over Dexter killing an innocent man and absolutely nothing came of it really sucks. Worst season by far, and that's saying a lot after the whole Skinner debacle last season.

Deb finding out in the book is completely glossed over. The epilogue "ties" up the end by telling you who dies, but there's not a single bit of dialog between Dex and Deb about it until the 3rd book. The start of the second book you just kind of assume she knows. Lindsay ends his books early for some reason, he kinda taps out at around 250 pages.

I'm bummed about Rita in the show. She and Masuka were my favorite supporting characters, but I like that the writers are willing to go to those extremes with the characters. While I was watching the finale I was wondering where they would take the story in the next season.

I agree with you about them willing to go to extremes with characters. I like that about Lost, too. You never TRULY know if a character is going to survive or not because the writers actually have the balls to go through with something big. Doakes' death was pretty massive, for example.
Rita never bothered me, she fit what was going on because Dexter invited her into his life. Everything still comes down to Dexter's decisions. Harry set up the Code for a reason, it took him years to get that into Dex's head and for years he worked well by following it. Rita was always a cover but the kids drew him in more than he ever imagined. For every step he took away from the Code, the harder his life became (which really started when he found out he had a brother). Dexter went through a pretty remarkable psychological change after years of being told he wasn't normal and HAD to be alone. He made a lot of mistakes and that's human, he always thought he could hold it together and make it work. That's human too. But in the end his mistakes came back to hurt him in a way he could never guard himself from.
I don't know how well they can follow this season; especially with the head show runner leaving.
