I Hate Spoiler Tags

Thank you bbobb for reporting the following post, and giving me the impetus to sound off about a problem that's bothered me for awhile: spoiler tags.

I hate them.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves about TNL, and the internet in general. I guess my objection to spoiler tags comes in two forms:

1. Spoiler tag crybabies. In my opinion, people who care obsessively about spoilers are like people with severe nut allergies (no offense to people with the latter, I know how serious it is, etc. etc.). I respect your position, but you can't expect the world to tailor itself to your highly exceptional point of view. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to avoid spoilers. More to the point, it is your responsibility to avoid anything that you personally might construe as a spoiler. If you want to wrap yourself up in a tight little media coccoon before Spiderman 3 comes out lest you read the barest scrap of gossip that will send you into an apopleptic fit, well, you better stay the fuck out of the Spiderman 3 thread. This neatly dovetails into a discussion of the second problem regarding spoiler tags:

2. Spoiler tag overuse. Because spoiler tag crybabies are so obnoxious, most people on TNL are so afraid of being flamed that they err on the side of using spoiler tags to excess. The average "new game" or "new movie" thread is so filled with spoiler "black ink" that I feel like I'm the postmaster at Guatanamo Bay or something. It's gotten so bad I have to wave the pointer over every spoiler marking just to find the legitimate information I'm looking for. When spoiler tags get in the way of basic readability, there's a problem.

I can't be the only one who feels this way. Thoughts?

Never really had a hard time dealing with them myself. Is it really so hard to mouse over the text, or are you against them in principle? Even so, I'd blame the people who insist on overusing them or bitch about them, not the feature.

In seriousness though, I did get annoyed and bitched in the thread a bit. I'm not a spoiler crybaby, I don't really give a fuck about every little thing being spoil. But the thing that pissed me off was the fact it was a MASSIVELY huge spoiler, pretty much the spoiler of the episode. The spoiler tags should be there for really major spoilers Sephiroth kills Aeris shit that it would piss you off to find out. But yeah it gets over used a lot, no need to spoiler shit that is really not going to be a major surprise or anything Josh's mom likes the cock

Spoiler tag crybabies are annoying as fucking hell, stay out of the threads then.

I rather like spoiler tags, mainly because I like to read other peoples' impressions on new games and movies even if I haven't seen them yet. It keeps me from stumbling into information that will ruin the experience while keeping me relatively informed on the topic. And it sure as hell is better than *SPOILERS* in huge font and then fifty lines of empty text just to say that Luke is Vader's father.

There is no spoon.

Spoiler tags have their place re: games because there's plenty of stuff to discuss that isn't story related. It's really not the entire internet's problem that Bbobb is stuck in Japan where he can't see 24. The entire fucking Western Hemisphere doesn't have to wait until you bring your ass back here to discuss what's on TV.

Seriously, this may have been the worst post reporting in the history of TNL. I'm actually angry.
