WrestleMania X8

Well the game has been out for two days now, and based on the three reviews Ive read and all the posts on Gamefaqs it seems that THQ has let us down yet again. THQ said the game would focus on simulation based grappling, just like No Mercy. They lied. Then THQ said the game would be half SD and half No Mercy, again a lie. I am still planning on renting the game when it hits Hollywood Video tommorrow but I am keeping my expectations low.......

BTW if anyone here has played the game impressions would be appreciated :D

Well, I rarely say this, but this game is crap... My copy is going straight back to store tomorrow.

The game just feels too much like Smackdown for my tastes. None of the punches, kicks, & throws feel like they have any weight behind them. I certainly didn't appreciate their decision to incorporate Smackdown-style grapple engine either.
Graphically, it's slightly better than Smackdown (PS2), but not as good as Raw (Xbox). Sound is horrible, especially for GC standards. Matter of the fact, I actually prefer N64 games' sound effects (except for the entrance theme musics, of course).
Create-A-Wrestler mode is quite limited too.
Some of the special match setups like Hell In The Cell & TLC matches are interesting, but poor game engine ruins the overall experience.

I can see people who enjoyed PS/2 Smackdown! series might have some fun with it, but as a fan of Aki-developed N64 wrestling games, it is a total disappointment for me.

Strange thing too, I actually like many of Yuke's developed games, except for their American released wrestling games...

This pisses me off so much. Why the crap couldn't THQ use AKI's engine!? That's what made wrestling games so freaking popular, and they decide (conciously!) to use SD's crap ass engine. Ugh :mad:

Anyone played All Star Wrestling 2 for PS2? The first one was crappy, but I heard they greatly improved it for the sequel.

I don't really expect much from US released wrestling games these days, but I find it just plain bizarre that Lance Storms official entrance theme is in this game, but the Hardy Boyz isn't. Whassup Wit Dat?! I mean, I can kinda see why people like Book and the nWo don't have their music since maybe, EA still has them or something (EA made the last batch of WCW games), but it makes NO sense for there to be missing music from the likes of Trish Stratus and Tajiri. I mean, hell, there music was in the last few games (RAW, SD3).

You know what ticks me off about this game? I saw someone trade in Morrowind for Xbox today at EB to get a copy of this one. Feh, I say.

The Hurricane has a realistically moving cape during his entrance.

And now from what everyones telling me is that it sux ass??? Holy guacomole. I hated the WWE SmackethDowneth engine, but adored the No Mercy one. Then I got Raw for the XBox. Hoping that a wrestling game would outshine the N64 game, but NOOO! The only reason I have a N64 is for No Mercy. Thats it and that sux. Stop listening to what everyone is saying about the game and play it for yourself. I absolutely hate the Smackdown engine, but I had a lot of fun with Wrestlemania X8 back in March and at E3. I don't get the fascination with No Mercy either, since Wrestlemania 2K was infinitely better than it.

Seriously dude, rent it or something, because you might actually enjoy the game.

I already e-mailed THQ about that, so we'll see what they say. IMO it's probably due to financial reasons. I know that Booker T's music is copyright Jimmy Hart (who's aligned himself with Acclaim and Legends of Wrestling), although I'm not sure where the nWo and Hogan's themes fall under. I mean, the most logical thing would be that they are also Hart's property if they were remixed, but I don't think they are.

As for the Hardyz music... well, no idea. Their entrance music is actually stock music (like the old Dudley Boyz theme), so I have no idea why that got cut out.

Oh well, it matters not if it is bad. Firepro is just around the corrner and Firepro D is here right now.

I once heard the Harlem Heat's theme in a Kids in the Hall sketch, so unless Jimmy Hart spent the early 90's pimping out songs to Canadian comedy troupes I think it's safe to say it's stock music. A great deal of WCW themes were. Jericho, Goldberg, Rey, I think maybe even DDP's classic "Smells Like White Trash" - all stock. Of course the licensed stuff and the Hart stuff all sounded exactly the same so it's near impossible to tell what's what. Hell, maybe Hart composed all that stock music and made a mint offa all them NASCAR ads and talk shows using the songs. But I doubt it. It is my understanding that WMX8 uses the instrumental version of "Live For the Moment" rather than the version we are accustomed to hearing for the Hardyz entrance.

E-mailed my bud at THQ and he said it basically came down to music licensing issues. Considering how insanely good this game is going to sell in the first place, I'm pretty sure that whoever held the rights to the songs THQ wanted didn't want to give them up, because THQ would've thrown a ton of money at them for these themes.

well, that's my speculation :) I think that it's either someone's not willing to give them the right to use the track, or the negotiations for the theme went on too long and weren't able to make it into the game.

my contact at thq said that they'll be working hard to make sure that all of the correct themes are in the game for next year, so you shouldn't worry about THQ not using those themes ever again.

I, too, enjoyed the game at E3. I played two matches and had fun. I noticed that I was repeating the same move alot, but I did not think too much of it.

Now that I have had a chance to play the full version in my home, I am upset at just how many wrong decisions were made with this title. My brother and I each bought a copy, but I am trading mine in. He owns almost every N64 wrestler, and he is keeping his, but he is less than enamored of it.

The Create-a-Superstar is an abortion. The number of front grapples is too limited. There is no localized damage. There is some poor collision detection: floating chairs and wrestlers walking through tables, for example. There is no blood. So many steps backwards were taken that it leaves you wondering what Yukes was thinking. See Giant Gram 2000 (Dreamcast) for an example of how a game can be arcade-y with a poor create-a-wrestler and still be a phenomenal experience. Why does the U.S. get the short end of the stick time and again when it comes to wrestling titles?

Not every game has to have every feature, but WMX8 represents a decline in quality that I would rather not support with my money. If this were just after the release of WCW Revenge or WWF Warzone, I would praise this game, but seeing this come out after Smackdown 3, WM2K, and No Mercy leaves a slightly bad taste in my mouth.

They were more than likely written by people who can handle all of the above mentioned flaws. I for one cannot handle these flaws when there are so many other excellent alternatives out there.

I cannot believe how disappointed I am in this game. Seriously, I'm in shock about how crappy this game is.

Look, we don't need to discuss what's so crappy about it -- if you've played it, you know. This post is to tell you guys who feel like I do what we can do about it.

1.) First off, if you hate it, take it back. This is the most effective way for THQ to hear us. The bottom line is money, and if this game doesn't sell as well as they expect, they'll hear us loud and clear. I'm taking mine back tomorrow.

2.) Secondly, let 'em know! We're consumers, we have a voice. Tell them what's wrong. Start with email. Here are the email addresses you'll need:

Start with THQ. When you email them, don't just scream profanity. Tell them exactly what you think, but do it intelligently. They'll listen. (I emailed them today -- I'll let you know when I get a response.

Tell them you're a fan, you've bought their previous products including wrestling games (No Mercy, Wrestemania2K) and that THQ has released an inferior product that you have returned. This is important -- stress that the WWE is currently LOSING YOUR MONEY based on THQ's performance.

That's bullshit because all original WWF songs are published by Stephanie Music, a division of the WWE. That gives THQ the rights to those songs by having the WWE license. I can maybe see there being no nWo music, or Booker music, or even Flairs music, cause EA might still have the WCW music rights, and Flairs music is some old classical stuff, but the WWE music should all be in there. Especially considering that Trish, Tajiri, Hardyz, etc. all had their music in RAW and SD which both came out mere months ago.

Don't listen to anyone, just play the game. It's a blast with four players. No, it's not No Mercy, but if you want to play No Mercy, you can find it anywhere for around 15 bucks. The lack of certain themes and backstage areas really takes nothing away from the game. It's fun in the ring, where it counts, and the first time you reverse a Stunner, you'll be in heaven.

Well, if YOU performed it, then you could not get sued, but the people who made that CD, since their hard work went into performing it, could sue you.

First of all this game kicks ass. I've only played it in 4 player mode but that's the only way these games are good anyway. I had just as much fun with this game as I did with No Mercy/WM2k. I don't think it plays much like Smackdown at all. It has a control scheme similar to No mercy but not exact. I say play it before you give up on it. As for there being no blood, I think the ESRB recently made it so any game with blood in it is rated M. As for the music copyright laws, I have that info if anyone really wants it, I'll have to dig it up though. Bottom line is if you like the older games give this game a chance. It sure as hell is 50 times better then that abortion on the XBOX. If you ask me these games were made with the multiplayer in mind and in that respect it passes with flying colors. I almost pissed myself from laughing during our 4 way ladder match that lasted about an hour.

All those songs are Stock Music that you'll hear at hockey, basketball, football, and baseball games. You'll also hear it on stations like ESPN as well. THQ would have to pay everytime to put it in the game. Maybe they didn't close a deal to get the music before the release date and didn't want to delay the game over music or maybe they were playing hardball with THQ so THQ decided to just go ahead and put something else in instead of throwing all this money at them just for music.

Anyway I finally got around to renting the game yesterday and I have to say, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. At first, I hated the gameplay, but after about an hour I got used to it and was enjoying laying the Smackdown(TM) quite a bit. The HIAC and TLC matches are awesome, and The battle for the belts mode is a cool adittion that will definitely add some longevity to the game. And my god, the tables!!! So many ways to put people through tables!! And there is an infinite supply of them in TLC matches!! It's almost enough to make me want to buy the game. Almost.

You see there are also a list of terrible things in the game that reads something like this.
CAW is freaking pathetic
The Music is screwed up for most wrestlers
The roster is incomplete IMO (No Raven, Tommy Dreamer, Justin Credible?? BOOO!)
There is a serious lack of grapple moves
Collision detection is whack
Sloppy control scheme

So, I know I have been bashing this game a lot but, now that I have actually had some serious play time, I think the game is not as big a dissapoitment as I origionally thought it was. It's not really worth buying, but it's definitely a solid weekend rental.

It's used all the time in ads and at sporting events - for a freakin' year it seemed like every update on the Torch included some nonsense like "I heard the Hardyz music in an ad for a tractor pull! Whassupwitdat?!" The answer they always gave was it's stock music. A great deal of WCW themes were stock, too. You can look this all up at the Torch if you like.

I'll give you the fact that the Hardyz theme is stock music, because I too heard that theme in a lot of places including WWF home videos, even before The Hardyz used it as their music. That would also explain why it's not available on any of the WWF Cds. However, being that it is "stock" music, that means anyone can use it, for free.

Even though a lot of WCW themes were stock music, the ones that weren't were usually composed by Jimmy Hart, and as part of the WCW buyout, they are now trademarks owned by WWE and now a part of WWE.

I should've clarified this earlier - the songs aren't public domain, so they don't get to use them for free. Companies pay a fee to, I dunno, Stock Music Inc., and earn the rights to use the music for this and that. Wrestling, talk shows, porno...they get a lot of their music this way.

Last night I heard the old Too Cool/Rikishi theme used during a segment on a 2 year old episode of the Chris Rock Show - another stock song that's commonly used. I think the Hollys and Dudleys old music was stock, and I also think someone (possibly myself) already pointed that out but I'm too dumb to check. There's a few others. What songs are missing from the game? Is it a sizable amount? I'm not about to buy or even rent it despite being slightly curious about how crappy this game is and how badly they neutered it. THQ and the WWF are just pathetic. (4 move per wrestler? Kevin Nash has more than that. Of course they're mostly different ways of flipping his long, beautiful mane of hair...)

If you are capable of finding a site or something like that, that has all the music you speak of, I'd be very interested in checking it out.

There's not THAT much music missing from the game. Hardyz, Tajiri, Trish, nWo, Booker, and... er, I can't remember who else.

I think the tracks you listed are all stock. Not sure about the nWo theme, but it might be. So they include songs by "bigtime" rock artists but not the cheapie stock music? Way to go, THQ.

I enjoy writing the said 'fucked up shit', and dicing it up. But I doubt you're the only one who likes me being around... I talk to a few dozen members on AIM regularly...

Mostly because discussing WMX8s "gameplay" would be futile.

I played it with 2 friends and went away midly entertained. Reminds me alot of royal rumble for DC...not a whole lot to do. I can imagine the 1 player game to be really boring but the multi is fun for awhile. Don't know what's up with the SNES quality music though. Needs a lot of polish to be sure. Average at best, I'd never buy it though.

4 days later and I feel like I never want to touch the game again. Getting all the secret characters/arenas and beating all the battle for the belts was pure monotonous hell.......at least multiplayer was somewhat entertaining and thank god I only retned the game :sweat:
