I am by no means a Sonic Youth expert, but I enjoyed the hell out of Dirty in my teenage years.
I'd start with Houdini and Stoner Witch, for the Melvins. Probably their catchiest albums, but still very weird in a good way.
I'll second Stoner Witch; it's probably their easiest album to listen to.
