A good group of players can make just about any MP game fun. Nothing can save a boring linear campaign.
I'll agree with Frog. DNF is kind of a repeat of Doom 3 being the followup to Doom 2: kicked up graphically with a new engine but with some letdowns that managed to jump in. I loved the jokes near the start of the game about how long it took for DNF to come out.
A few textures DO look like they came from a Quake 1 era title. Any textures that were in older versions of DNF should've been pumped up a bit in the meantime. Serious Sam 2 from 2005 actually looks better in places.
I went with the PC version. Hopefully the stutters can be fixed in a later patch. Lower your expectations a bit, and maybe wait until it goes down to $30 if you'd rather. I am glad I downgraded from the $90 BOS version. People Can Fly or Croteam should've been let in on this one to help out, especially after Bulletstorm. DNF may not have shit on DN3D and will probably be KOed by Serious Sam 3, but it's decent.
Regardless of it's quality, it still blows my mind that this game took, like, 15 years to make. George Broussard is clearly batshit insane.
more like Zoidberg insane, but I agree.
You can't even give 3D Realms the benefit of the doubt, because they did it twice. Prey took almost 12 years, and Duke took 14. That's not a coincidence.
I'm kind of interested to see if Gearbox continues the series now that they have the rights, despite the (unfairly) abysmal reaction to this game.
Not having played the game yet, one thing I don't get is the backlash in the press against the Duke Nukem character himself, bitching that he's offensive, tasteless, blah, blah, blah. I mean, is he doing anything different now than he did in Duke3D? If not, what's the fucking suprise?
I don't think anyone was surprised by the type of humor, rather how poorly written/executed it is.
Playing the game, I found myself thinking "Really? that's the best they could come up with?" way too often.
Take Two says there will be more Duke.
