Shit guys, he said it wasn't a pile of shit, lets go buy it.
Does it support stylus aiming?
This man is lying.
I tried playing this game and I just couldn't do it and I'll play almost any FPS to completion usually. It's crappy looking and crappy design with stupid decade old humor that wasn't even funny in the first place and certainly doesn't compete with Bulletstorm.
It's really not that bad. When it's good it's actually a lot of fun. Every level is incredibly different in style and usually gameplay. They did a lot right.
My biggest issues are still shoehorning a cover-centric healing system into a game not designed for it at all and the two weapon limit. Also, it seems to have trouble putting more than 3 enemies on screen at once, Doom 3 style. I actually enjoy the pacing, which is very Half Life 2 inspired, with sudden changes between puzzle and combat. I also like that they haven't forgotten that platforming was an important part of Duke 3D. There are some levels that drag, like The Hive, with its awful pill bug pushing, but most of the levels end before they get boring.
I don't know, I'm kind of thrown by the over-the-top hatred of this game. It'm not saying it's great, but if Duke Nukem Forever ever meant anything to you, I think it'd be worth a rent.
Of course I heard the last few levels are the worst and I haven't gotten there, so maybe that's part if it.
God, I hate modern FPS design. Wake me when the new Serious Sam comes out.Quote:

Can we put DNF and the next Serious Sam in a blender, filter out the nasty bits, and play that instead as the proper Duke 3D sequel?
James
Finished this today. It was crap but not
OMG worst game ever crap. Cost $4 in redbox rental. Worth it.
The main thing that redeems this is that it's genuinely different from other games out there right now. The weird Alice in Wonderland shrinking stuff and platforming and HL2-style physics stuff is just such a change of pace from CoD stuff.
Anything is better than single player brodude FPS.
I would think a multi-player brodude FPS could be a lot worse.
A good group of players can make just about any MP game fun. Nothing can save a boring linear campaign.
I'll agree with Frog. DNF is kind of a repeat of Doom 3 being the followup to Doom 2: kicked up graphically with a new engine but with some letdowns that managed to jump in. I loved the jokes near the start of the game about how long it took for DNF to come out.
A few textures DO look like they came from a Quake 1 era title. Any textures that were in older versions of DNF should've been pumped up a bit in the meantime. Serious Sam 2 from 2005 actually looks better in places.
I went with the PC version. Hopefully the stutters can be fixed in a later patch. Lower your expectations a bit, and maybe wait until it goes down to $30 if you'd rather. I am glad I downgraded from the $90 BOS version. People Can Fly or Croteam should've been let in on this one to help out, especially after Bulletstorm. DNF may not have shit on DN3D and will probably be KOed by Serious Sam 3, but it's decent.
Regardless of it's quality, it still blows my mind that this game took, like, 15 years to make. George Broussard is clearly batshit insane.
more like Zoidberg insane, but I agree.
You can't even give 3D Realms the benefit of the doubt, because they did it twice. Prey took almost 12 years, and Duke took 14. That's not a coincidence.
I'm kind of interested to see if Gearbox continues the series now that they have the rights, despite the (unfairly) abysmal reaction to this game.
Not having played the game yet, one thing I don't get is the backlash in the press against the Duke Nukem character himself, bitching that he's offensive, tasteless, blah, blah, blah. I mean, is he doing anything different now than he did in Duke3D? If not, what's the fucking suprise?
I don't think anyone was surprised by the type of humor, rather how poorly written/executed it is.
Playing the game, I found myself thinking "Really? that's the best they could come up with?" way too often.
Take Two says there will be more Duke.

Betting on Duke is a sucker's game.
This is really it.
I laughed a lot during Bulletstorm and it was a similar comedic style. I felt insulted by how unfunny and obviously thrown together everything was in DNF, especially the the terrible humor. Shit like making fun of how long it took the game to come out wasn't even well done, and honestly, was a pretty big sign early on of how little they genuinely put into this game.
I'm hoping that Gearbox, starting from zero, can make a Duke worth playing. They're talented, but maybe there's only so much you can do when stitching Frankenstein's monster back together.
But seriously, fuck regenerating health and wandering around waiting for something to shoot. Anything new with the Duke name needs to be based on the Duke 3D demo and select bits of the full game. Extrapolate from there and forget Forever ever happened.
James
It was known from the start that Gearbox was just finishing the beta they got from 3D Realms and shitting it out.
At this point, I don't think the series is even worth continuing, but I have to wonder why Gearbox picked up the rights if they had no intention of doing something worthwhile with it.
Gearbox would probably have been better off rebooting the DNF project. Let's hope they take the flak they get seriously. The weapon limit should be gone next time, leaving Duke able to carry ALL weapons. Regen health should probably be put in only as an option- I'd like to be able to use medkits instead, but maybe with the ability to carry a few around similar to F.E.A.R. 1 & 2. At least the steroids pack a lethal punch and mix well with beer. :)
A new Duke needs to be more of a PC game also- DNF does seem to have been gimped a bit by having to cater to consoles, both graphically and in game play. For one thing, it's too linear. Going slightly off your path or blasting a weakened wall with an RPG in DN3D can lead to finding a secret weapon or other item you may want. Not so here. The replay value once you finish is a bit suspect.
I'd like to see a classic Duke mod for this, whether it's fanmade or paid Gearbox DLC- basically removing the weapon limit and putting medpacks in the levels.
When you hear Randy talk about the game, I don't think he's just bullshitting because he has to. I think he has a lot of respect for the guys at 3DR and likes what they've done.
And in this particular case, I kind of feel like I'd rather play the "real" DNF than a new game called DNF with a few of the same sets. They pulled that shit with Prey, and while I liked Prey, I'm still kind of bummed I'll never play that game they were working on all those years at 3DR.
"Gimped" by lame modern FPS conventions. I have a hard time believing this version of DNF is all that old, honestly.
2 weapon limit is a concession to console game design. It only ever happened because controllers don't have a number row to choose 10 different weapons.
A pause/slowdown + weapon wheel works fine.
Also, a two weapon limit is poor design. A four weapon limit is a concession to controller limitations.
Wow, I revised that post and took out some bits I forgot to replace. It was supposed to be about reacting to Blackface Forever's critics, not to the show itself.
Oh well, not important. I very much look forward to buying this for $20 soon.
I knew I was forgetting something when grousing about the suck-features of Duke. 2-weapon limit, that's a big one. Any developer putting that into their game needs to be beaten with a crowbar until they understand why it's a bad idea.
James
I beat the game yesterday, and the final boss battle is pretty cool but way too easy considering how difficult some of the other bosses are.
It doesn't come close to Duke 3d's battle in the football field, with all the cheerleaders and the field goal.
Played the demo, not as fun as the first few levels of old Duke 3D (before it wore thin and you went back outside to play basketball).
Let's hope Valve & Croteam don't cross this line when they get to their respective part 3s. That said, I trust them not to.
Damn you, Call of Duty- for inspiring other games to emulate the 2 weapon limit. Just now I found a railgun and cursed when I realized I'd have to give up the Ripper or the RPG. Goodbye RPG. :( I should not have to make this decision. Quit being a bunch of fucking sheep, developers. HL2 on 360 lets you carry a lot of weapons and has a fairly decent means of picking them by D-Pad. I guess in Duke it's actually a 4 weapon limit since you can always carry the pipebombs and trip mines- but this still bites considering you could carry all 10 at once in DN3D.
Yep, Unreal 2.5 and not 3 like most other devs use.Quote:

This game was $8.09 at Gamestop today. Just saying.
A new DLC pack came out the other day, too. I'm sort of interested, except I don't want to pay $10 for it.
I heard they did actually fix some of the issues in patching, like getting rid of the two weapon limit.
It's $5 on Steam right now, if you really want to waste your time.
No, it's not. I'm talking about the The Doctor Who Cloned Me, not the game proper (which I've had since launch).
I CANNOT READ.
This is pretty cool. A mod for Duke Nukem 3D based on that E3 2001 trailer just came out: http://www.moddb.com/mods/duke-nukem-forever
I've only played a few minutes but it seems great so far.
I figured out why this game was taking so long.
It's because 3DRealms are idiots

That trailer was so rad. If that game ever came out it would've been awesome.
