I just got a settlement check from a class action lawsuit filed against the Pizza Hut. I was thinking about buying a PS3 with the money, but I'd rather put it towards a new car. Again....only if the PS3 wasn't $600......thats a good chunk for a down payment on my car.
Buy a 360 if you don't have one.
If you don't have one and don't buy one, I hope your new car explodes when you start it.

I don't think Nintendo's fascist third-party policies had anything to do with saving the industry. It was all about money. I think SMB saved the console gaming industry. Nobody would have bought the NES, post-crash, if it didn't have a killer app. And if nobody had bought the NES, we'd all be playing games on our PCs.

I just think it's pretty fucking hypocritical, emotional, and childish, because the same thing is going to happen with Sony when they release that game that you want. Or when the price drops. Or when whatever the root of your anger is, that's causing you to irrationally shit on every decision Sony makes, or highlight every mistake. Then, once again, people those very same people are going to be like, "LOL I never had a bias towards or against the system, I just like games."
It happens every four years or so. Some company has to be the bitter gamer's whipping boy. I guess it's Sony's turn now.
Fair enough. Gamers just need to understand that every system and every generation is a new beginning, and that if any medium is about change, it's videogames, and you should start being more adaptable to it. The changes may not immediately be for the better, but it's all a learning process for the companies who are producing our forms of entertainment. We are the most fickled of all fanbases, even worse than Comic Book nerds. But the fact is, ultimately, the companies' goals are to make money, and the only way that they are going to do so is to please their fanbase.
In that light, it's not like the companies are against gamers, and gamers shouldn't be against the companies. Criticism is fine, but it should be more constructive than scathing. It shouldn't be the shit like, "I HOPE SONY BURNS IN HELL!!!1223" like the constant uproar of shit that I've been seeing here.
I used to think of TNL as the more mature gaming forum. The gaming forum for older gamers. But now, it's more like the internet equivalent of an convalescent community for old people somewhere in florida. Everyone's just bitching, moaning, and shitting their pants. You guys have become so jaded, old, and outdated that it makes those of us who have a more removed view of the gaming community shake our heads.
I don't want to see Sony fall, it breaks my heart to see them making poor business decisions, but I'm pretty sure that if they want to keep their cobra clutch on the industry, they're going to be looking at what the community is saying, and eventually it will get high enough through to the buraeucracy to make them once again change their business model and figure out a better way to make a profit, that's a happy medium between both them and gamers.
That's what Microsoft did with XBOX 360, that's what Nintendo is trying to do with the Wii.
20 months from now, most of the people hating on Sony will probably have forgotten all of the shit that they've said because they'll be too busy playing whatever it is that they enjoy so much on that very system. That's what happens every time.
So, sony haters? No. But there still needs to be some kind of forum self-awareness and reform, because it's sad what happened to this community.

Another thing that really bugs me about the PS3 is the controller. I was never a very big fan of the Dual Shock controller on the PS1 and the PS2. For some reason I just never really cared for the analogue stick placement, the crappy d-pad, or just the shape of the controller in general. Its just always been an uncomfortable experience to play a PS1 or PS2 game for any long stretches. Therefore, I was a bit disappointed to see that the PS3 controller looks to be the same general style of controller that Sony has been using the last two generations. For my $600 I at least want them to put a little more effort into re-designing the controller so it at least feels like I am buying a new console. I honestly would have even settled for that boomerang controller if it would have lessened the good ol' "claw hand" syndrome that the PS controllers give me.
Stop it. The controller looks that way because it's widely regarded as being hands down the most ergonomical controller. Believe me, they TRIED to change it and it looked like warm shit.
I would like to see the Dual Shock format continue for as long as it works. Simple if it ain't broke theory. You don't mess with success.
But it isn't the most ergonomic. The asymmetric analog sticks of the Xbox S, 360, and GameCube pads feel a lot better. The overly convex shape of the analog sticks is also fairly uncomfortable.
And if you defend the d-pad, you're a tard.
Well, I guess its true that if the majority of the public thinks it isn't broken then they shouldn't fix it. Also, in the long run its probably a better design than the N64 and Gamecube controllers. However, I simply prefer the feel of the Xbox 360 and Dreamcast controllers over the Playstation controllers these last few generations. Plus, I've never met anybody in real life who actually likes the D-Pad on Sony's controllers. Would it have hurt them to at least change the D-Pad to the style that every other controller uses?Quote:

This is a misconception. Nintendo's seal of quality did a ton to insure that there was a certain standard among the games released for the NES, but it had nothing to do with the company's strict and unfair licensing agreements. Telling 3rd parties that if they publish for the NES they can't publish for any other console has nothing to do with the quality of the games they release. If anything, Nintendo stifled competition and kept many games off of more powerful hardware.Quote:

If Sony hadn't outfitted the PS1 with what was then a monster GPU, we'd probably be ~5 years behind on graphics today.
At the time no console did that, at best they all drew and textured polygons (usually quads [], not triangles <|) because it was a perfect way to draw sprites and apply scaling, rotation, and tilts. All of these "next generation" machines still had 2D hardware for BGs and plain sprites to supplement that, they were all basically taking the next logical step forward from where the 16-bit machines were. None of these machines had any hardware to do transforms and lighting, because you didn't need many polygons to draw 2D scenes, nor did you need to light them, nor did they have hardware to do depth testing because 2D scenes don't vary a lot in the z axis. That's what the Jaguar did, that's what the 3DO did, that's what the Saturn did, and that's probably what the Nintendo/Sony machine would have done, since it was in design even before the Saturn. Not even arcade and workstation setups did it all in hardware and/or at a reasonable consumer cost. Sega's Model-1 and 2 used fairly expensive processors to a lot of it in software, for example. The first 3D PC graphics cards didn't even exist at the time, they came out 2 years later in 1996 and only did #1 on the list, they didn't get to #2 or #3 until '98 and '99. The N64 came out in '96 with an SGI GPU and did #1 and #3. The entire consumer graphics industry is where it is today largely because of Sony showing what was possible technically and economically.
So, I'm not saying Sony was the first to do 3D games, or even 3D hardware in general, or that 3D games wouldn't exist if they hadn't released the PS1. I'm saying they came up with the consumer GPU design that everyone else followed, that still stands to this very day, that the entire real-time graphics industry is built on, at a time when their competitors couldn't do it economically, or didn't think it was a big enough deal to design their entire machine around 3D, or flat out didn't know how to do it effectively, or various combinations of the above.
I haven't put the Wii d-pad to test yet, but the 360 pad is definitely worse. The worst first party d-pad I've used, probably. It looks fine and feels fine, but actually using it is a bitch--I realized this the first time I tried typing in my name on one of the 360's on-screen keyboards. The games industry has always been about what's the hottest trend that sells at the moment. Back then it was beat-em-ups, shoot-em-ups, fighting games and puzzle games. Nowadays it's First Person Shooters, RPGs, Sports Games and hentai sims. Both eras had/have more than their fair share of overhyped games, liscenced garbage and just all around shitty games. And let's not forget the craptacular localization that brought us such gems as "All your base are belong to us", "Dead Peppers" and "VICTOLY!".
Contrary to what nostalgia will tell you, the golden era of gaming wasn't so grand. It's like people who would have you believe that there was no better time in the United States than the 1950's, so long as you were white.
The wheels of time will continue to spin wether you get onboard or not and trends will continue to change. Instead of being bitter about it why don't try riding the wave while it's there or if you're really that put out about the whole thing, make your own games? Xbox Live Arcade development kits are only 100 bucks.

I agree. That's why I mentioned that the NES saved the console gaming industry. Interestingly, in Europe the NES didn't really catch on to the degree it did here. The d-pad on my 360 controller has gotten much better. There's a break in period if you don't want to do the d-pad sanding modification to make it register better.

A lot of interesting points were brought up regarding TNL's attitude towards Sony (and Outrider's post on what Sony brought to the table with the Playstation was excellent), but as I mentioned in my earlier post, it boils down to this: once Sony starts delivering on the promised potential of the PS3, then you'll probably start seeing the hate subside.
I firmly believe that the hate Sony's getting now for the PS3 is justified, but I won't discount the system until its one year anniversary. If Sony doesn't get their act together by then, then I'll really feel sorry for those who spent $600 on the machine.

If you're arguing that Sony thinks 2D games won't sell on American shores at full price, then you have part of an argument, but that in no way means Sony is against 2D. As I just pointed out plenty of 2D games come out on American shores at full price when they're being released by companies that have their shit together. Why does Atlus not complain about how almost their entire output are 2D games? Sony's released more 2D games then Microsoft or Nintendo has been (excluding handhelds), so why are they singled out for this? I'd like to see the huge list of 2D games on the N64 and Xbox (no roms please) that shows how specifically Sony must've been so much against that visual type.
