Even though the PS3 is losing Sony a ton of money at the moment, the company is apparently seriously looking at a potential price cut for the next-gen system. A senior Sony exec told reporters that it's an option that may be used to expand the market.

I read they'll have 65nm chips really soon, though. They could conceivably cut the price and still maintain the same margins.
They really need a $100 drop to stimulate sales though, $50 just won't be enough of a difference to get people to bite. And that might be a huge hit financially - like, $40-50 million worth.
I wouldnt think this would take too long, with production ramping up on just about all the components. The largest expense is on the blu-ray player. Its adoption is skyrocketing since the PS3 release, its only a matter of time before they become cheaper to produce, but im also not saying DVD cheap.
I thught they weren't considering a price drop till at least 2008. I just don't see them cutting the price anytime soon considering they are still losing a great deal on each unit. Alos a price cut wont do shhit if there aren't any games worht buying. This is the first thing that Sony needs to fix.

So this would be the second PS3 price cut. If it's another 20% cut, I'll be on the verge of picking up a 60GB. Very doubtful due to the impact such a significant cut would have on margins, but like Strider said, $50 won't be enough.
