MK's Laptop Hunt

So I'm trying to find a laptop that'll work great for law school but I wouldn't mind getting a desktop replacement. Basicly I can't get an apple, they won't let me use it on the exams.

So I need a windows laptop with wireless, but I'd like it to replace my desktop as well.
My current desktop is a pretty old custom built thing. I love it
1800 Athleon XP
512 DDR400 ram
Radeon 9800 Pro
120 gb hd

Now the question is, is it worth it to replace the whole bloody thing and get the above laptop, or should I go with a cheaper model that won't game or do as much storage for classes. I've got about $1100 to spend.

Would it be a mistake to get the linked top, or does anyone else have a sweet deal i should know about.

My friend has this Asus laptop and likes it. Its better than the one you linked too (better videocard..etc) and is customizable. Ignore the dumb Ruby pic on the laptop itself as you can put an image of your choosing for a small fee. Its just a suggestion and I'm sure others here who swear by their laptops will come up with something nice.


Try this notebook message board. You can ask these nice folks for suggestions as well and I'm sure will link you to different models and reviews.

Might I ask why? That sounds wierd.

Laziness. Exam lockout software doesn't work on Macs.

I give this advice in every laptop thread, but it's good advice. If you plan on taking this laptop to school with you and carrying it around at all, get the smallest one you can find. Even a 15" powerbook (or whatever they're called now) is a PITA to carry when combined with notebooks and textbooks.

So even if he was running Windows on it he could switch the OS and get around whatever protection they're running? I have no idea about this specific software so I'm pretty clueless here.

I'm not gonna attempt that, basicly if i fuck it up, the test is over for me. Also the site was awesome Raystorm. Reconsidering my options thru there.

This is great advice. I picked up a 15.4" widescreen laptop last fall and while I love it I have a harder time transporting it than I expected. Notebookforum is a great site too.

If durability is a serious issue get a Thinkpad, otherwise monitor sites like bensbargains.net for good deals.

You cannot fail with a Thinkpad. I dropped that shit while on and it didn't skip a beat. <3 IBM.

Well its for school. My current pick is 14.1 in and 4.8 lbs Durability isn't an issue, overall reliablity is. I'll look into the thinkpads tho, thx razor, spo
