You know, I went there on a whim a couple of weeks ago and got trolled for pretty much no reason. It was weird. I love TNL and I check it every single day. I can't post as much because I have been busier at work.
Stop fucking whining.
http://www.got-next.com
stop being a useless fag
Stop using homophobic language to personally insult others.
It appears buttcheeks has been penetrated.
And the dumbest rule at TNL is enforced once again. I'm sure there is a victim of buttcheek's capital crime somewhere crying in a corner. He should have said inbred redneck. Since that's fair game to the bleeding hearts, he wouldn't even get a warning. I'm not sure how it's different in reality, since both are insults about something that in theory the person can't help.
I thought the whole purpose of this was to voice your opinions about TNL? Buttcheeks did just that as to why its not fun for him.
I agree with Yoshi, the rule is dumb.
You're not making sense.
It's one day. Relax. And he isn't banned for one infraction.
We're in a thread with several people mentioning that they've left or become disinterested in this forum due to negativity, in part or on the whole. You may not care, or be offended, but some do and are, and it is a part of the rules of conduct for a reason.
Stibbons you've ruined another thread. :(
They should get a day off to grow some thicker skin. I wish these people who are offended would man up and say it where everyone can see. I guess if they had the balls for that they wouldn't be offended in the first place though.
The only thing you should be offended about from buttcheeks is his abuse of the American language.
You pretty much bait cheeks into this shit. There should be special rules for those mentally incapable of taking some ribbing. You just keep poking the poor, retarded bastard until he bites and when he does he pays the price while you get off scott-free. I know that's pretty much the bread-and-butter of trolling but I say it's more your fault than his.

This thread is not about the morality of the system or the language. If you want to bitch at me, feel free to create an Andy is a monster thread in the place where it is appropriate. In the mean time, stop continuing to run this thread off of it's original discussion.
I want to make one last off topic point, and then I will drop it. It actually relates back to the original intent, so it may not even be off topic.
The way this thread was moderated pretty much sums up the only thing I see wrong with TNL today. The off-topic stuff goes on for about a page, but as soon as "fag" is typed, then something must be done. Is that seriously the way it's supposed to work?

Edited for content. That's not needed in Sound Off - AFX
This thread personifies why people leave TNL.
Nah, this thread demonstrates why people come back. The trolling here is frequently annoying, sure, but it can be intellectually challenging and as funny as anything in any movie or television show. I think a lot of members have grown up on these boards and analyzed their reactions and ingrained beliefs in a very healthy way.
Stibbons is your therapist, and he does it for free. I will always see GameGO-era Revoltor as the originator, though, with SuperGHOULSNGHOSTS embodying more of the trolling I don't enjoy. I don't consider Yoshi a troll at all.
I don't see anything wrong with the whining here. This whole thread is an invitation to whine.
I do agree that buttcheeks stepped over the line, but I also think he was baited. You can't have a thread where people are invited to share why they've left TNL and then tell them not to whine.
And there's nothing intellectual about being a troll. It's nothing more than aggressive attention-whoring.
TNL is too politcally correct. I think "fag" isn't enough to warrant a ban or even a warning. But, then again, I think this entire country is too preoccupied with the shit that comes out of people's mouths.
That's the biggest bunch of bullshit you've ever written.
I've pretty much been on TNL for the past 4 and a half years with very little exception. I go little breaks where I only check it a few times a day as opposed to much more often, but I very rarely go a single day without being on the boards.
Hell, just last night I showed up at Destin's house for a sweet party, and am probably going back today to watch the SB on his sweet HD. I only met Destin once before yesterday, and that was because has PMed me and was like you go to UMD? So in conclusion, TNL gave me a sweet HD to watch the Super Bowl on with a fellow Colts fan.

Two threads featuring you crying about lack of moderation.
Neither of which had anything to do with verbiage, use of the word "fag", or anything remotely similar. It had to do with idiots derailing threads over and over again and discussion coming to a standstill over that practice. You going to argue that derailing threads is good for a message board?
This has nothing to do with crying about being called a "fag" on a VG board or getting banned for it and bears no relevance.
I never said you cried about being called a fag. I said you cried about the lack of moderation. So now you've got moderation.
I must have a profound impact to bitch in a few threads over 5 years and thereby garnered changes to TNL's rules of conduct - including things I didn't even bitch about. Think about it.
Squeaky wheel.
I lost my mind after I stopped sending reviews in, somehow completely forgot about the site, then got weirded out when I found out Dave had found the site and started coming here.
The trick is just how much you choose not to care.
Also get over it. You can say fag all you want in the veterans board.
Stop banning people for using homophobic language.
That said; if you can't take trolling, get off the internet.
I thought you were "done"?
He's not leaving until the Wii and PS3 online IDs are added to the template.
I <3 TNL because a thread like this can degenerate into what we have here so quickly.
Evolve. Not degenerate. Evolve.

I have taken a few ban vacations in the last few years. There just isn't anything interesting going on right now. I think the new "nice" TNL is driving some of the old diehards away.
True that, if this was a queer board I'd say ban, but no this is the Internet, unless someone is just being stupidly disruptive, or making the board unusable there shouldn't be any bans longer than 24 hours.
/resident queer
And I definitely think the STFU newbie image really filters out the gamefaqs crowd.
That STFU newbie image is a staple of TNL and if that were ever banned from being posted I probably wouldn't come back, either. *waits for snide remark by Yoshi*
He wasn't banned for using homophobic language. He was banned for using homophobic language after having already broken the rules of conduct twice.
Believe me, there has been plenty of discussion as to revamping or outright dumping the infraction system, and I've generally been on the side of dumping them in those discussions; but as it stands, there are a perfectly reasonable set of rules, and they will be enforced.
...What are you even saying?
It isn't longer than 24 hours. And moreover, this is another point that has been discussed at length regarding the infraction system. What is the purpose of a 24 hour ban? Does it really serve any kind of purpose?Quote:

I'm late to the party, and I see this thread has degenerated but I'm still going to make a serious post.
I've been here since the GameGo exodus, so however many years ago that was. I've taken some breaks from TNL just because there were some times when I just didn't have the time to waste on the internet. Now I use TNL to alleiviate the boredom of work.
Personally I like the abrasive TNL. It leads to much more enjoyable reading. I don't like the new infraction system letting people with sand in their vagina's report every little thing that bothers them. I'm not sure of a solution though. Maybe the person who reports shit shouldn't be able to do it anonymously? And the infraction system seems pretty much worthless.
Also to note Andy's post. 24 hour bans seem pretty much worthless IMO, it's definitely not a significant amount of time.
Oh, Finchie-poo, you're so fabulous.
What happend? Why cant I see page three? :p
I don't know if any of you remember, but fag was banned originally because not only could it be offensive, but it was being used rampantly by everyone. If its allowed again, you would all say it too much again.
Well, the thread was pretty much on topic until Stibbons stepped in. It's like that's a pattern or something.
Nick said I'm allowed to call Chux a fag.
Eh. I've just stopped posting once or twice without any premeditation or annoucement, and I always thought it had more to do with me than TNL. Sometimes I just get sick of it. Probably also has to do with the fact that I've been an active mod or admin longer than anyone else here so I have almost no perspective of TNL as a regular poster.
I think the great thing about TNL is that it can be so many things to so many different people. It's primarily about games, but I bet a majority of posters now come back to TNL more for other topics. And I think it goes beyond just online chit-chat if you want it to. I'd actually say that TNL has been the biggest influence on my life over the past five years and probably the only constant.
TNL almost seems like a hub of ex gamers. When you strip that away, you are just left with internet savy normal people i suppose.
Shut up.
I'll be back when I burn myself out on the Burning Crusade.
Yeah, Andy tried to cop your title.
The World of Warcraft people decide when TNL lives and dies. We'll cast Ressurection (Rank 4) on it in a few months.
f-chan isn't used nearly as much as it used to.
The whole point of the thread is to bitch. stfu biff.
Just a coward.
I have to agree with the sentiment that things just aren't very civil on TNL anymore. I came over after the GameGO! fiasco and met lots of cool people, but many of those people have left out of frustration. JohnPV and I used to have these long conversations about shmups, for example, and now that just isn't possible. There's an asshole contest going on here 24/7, and any attempt at genuine conversation is to be mocked and ripped apart by a legion of douchebags trying to be the next Josh. I don't want to single anyone out because I don't think the board has truly bad people on it, I think the atmosphere is just a little poisonous. Take Bbobb and me for example; a few months ago we had a pretty brutal feud on here and we both said some pretty awful things to each other. A few years ago Bbobb was my go-to guy when I wanted to order a game and we talked a lot. I think we're all just really defensive nowadays because someone's always looking to start shit and nobody wants to get caught flatfooted. I think we all need to re-commit to putting our best foot forward and posting as if we're talking at the watercooler.
Now that I've finally got a 360 and Live I've grown to appreciate TNL a lot more; I play almost exclusively with TNLers at this point. I think Live makes the board better too, it fosters a feeling of goodwill. It's fucking brutal playing Gears with random people because it's all 14 year olds flexing their e-penis when I just want to do a few curb stomps before bed.
Here's the watercooler Spo has in mind:

Are you implying that I'm a f**?
I think he's actually outright saying it. Either that or that what you're thinking of is fantasy land and will never happen.
I was more going for the hippie love and peace, but if the shoe fits...
Quite a few of TNLs best posters are too busy playing WoW right now to post.
It'll get better, don't cry guys.
where did Dyne's last post just go? , the one right after Schlep's "agreed"
I've never left or been banned. This is one of the very few places on the internet that has been nearly weeded of retards, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I think our way of handling noobs is optimal. Irredeemable idiots should be identified and driven off with torches and pitchforks. Many forums don't allow posters to call a spade a spade, and so a bunch of dumb spades start multiplying and turn the place into a retard rodeo.
However, I am going to have to agree with IP, Stibbons is far and away the most repellant poster here. 99.8% of his posts come off as hating for the sheer sake of hating. Which would be one thing if he was just some random moron, but I know he's an intelligent guy that would be a great asset to the forum if he'd tear himself away from his worn-out gimmick and make constructive posts more often. Open up your heart and let the sun shine in, man.
I think what has hurt TNL the most is the constant siphoning of quality members who would regularly contribute import impressions or cutting edge announcements to blogs, fansites, GAF, or game companies. There's no reason to read or write it here if it's available elsewhere now.
I've been playing only one game since October, and it's the same game that TNL wrote off before the beta was done. I also haven't committed myself to a next gen console. Between those two, there's nothing left for me to talk about. If there ever were a time to quit TNL and/or gaming, now would be easiest. :\
PSO
Oh Jesus.
I've been here since August 2002. Stibbons told me about this place while I was in charge of the video game section of 411wrestling.com, and I've been here ever since.
TNL is my favorite site ever. It's my homepage. I check it at least once whenever I'm at a computer. I've looked at many message forums, and TNL has by far some of the brightest posters who have respect for English grammar.
I love conversing with you guys about video games (& other stuff) because you really know your stuff (or even if you don't, it's still an entertaining read). I understand the complaints about the trolling, but I'm at the point where I easily ignore the post and move on.
Even with the bad, I'd rather "internet" hang out with you guys than anyplace else. So much so that I actually "real life" hung out with some of the folks here. I've been to three TNL Get-Togethers, and I've had a blast every time.
And, as other people mentioned in this thread, TNL is what makes having a XBL Gold Account worth it. I've played Halo 2, Phantom Dust, Third Strike, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, DOA4, Gears of War, and the Crackdown Demo with TNL folks, and there is no comparison from that and playing with randoms. My friend list is just about full because it's filled with TNL people.
As for the "loss of TNL shine", I think it's because there isn't much going on in the industry (it seems like we are in recovery mode after two major console launches), so there isn't much to talk about. I'm sure the chatter will really pick up near the fall as Sony and Nintendo try to showcase what their systems can do and Microsoft plans the Halo 3 Super Hype Train Extravaganza.
Nonetheless, God bless TNL.
