I miss photo assignments.
Sure thing...
As a rule I would pay very close attention to the framing in your shots. Also your backgrounds. Its really easy to forget about your backgrounds, but they are VERY important to your overall shot. "Compositional Relations: Unbalanced Composition" is a perfect example of this. See if you can guess what about the background of this one drives me crazy, and what about it I think works really well.
"Frame Division: Diagonal Division Into Halves" is really close to being an awesome shot. I would have put the bottom edge of the board EXACTLY in the two corners, dividing the picture EXACTLY in half and not chopped off that poor girl's forehead. Actually, I think you should go back and reshoot the exact same picture, except for "art" and not for class. Same outfit. No necklace, same earrings. Maybe have her pose follow the angle of the board a little bit more. Or at least her eyes. Burn up a few shots here, and try a few different things.
And keep shooting.
Also: a tripod can be your best friend for composing your shots. you can set something up, and really think about what you're shooting before you shoot it.
You need a patient and comfortable subject for these things though... most people don't like you staring at them through a lens for a few minutes and saying things like "shit" or "fucking hell".
Also: If you use digital, treat each shot like its on film you had to pay for. One of the main problems I have with digital photography is it allows you to shoot a bunch of crap with zero consequences. Pretend each shitty picture you take is going to cost you a dollar, and don't review your shots until after you've left the location. This will make you work harder for your shots.
BINGO! It looks painful.
Does "Frame Division: Diagonal Division Into Halves" bother you as much as it bothers me?
I spent a paragraph on that. Check post 105.
I really think that it could be an effective shot with a bit more time spent on composition. This is why I suggested a reshoot.
Just going through these quickly I have a couple of comments:
The placement of the subject: Just because the assignment is something like Frame Division, that doesn't mean that you can ignore the placement of the subject. Take "Grids" for example. The subject is dead center when the composition would be a lot better if you combined your frame division with some simple techniques using the rule of thirds.
As for the previously mentioned two pics, plus "Division Into Thirds 1", merged objects, especially when there's a living being as the subject, is a no no.
Then there's lighting. You've got some backlight issues in several of these ("Low Angle Shot", etc.) With bright backgrounds you have to take the light at the subject, not from where the picture is being taken. Otherwise, you get a dark subject as you have. Also, bounce some light on the subject from the front.
If i had to guess for unbalanced composition, it would be the square trimmed bushes, or the light pole that his head cuts off. After sifting through all my photos this one was the only one that worked, and depending on the shots had to ALL be as if in same scene. So if 1 shot was screwed up id have to redo the ENTIRE segment. It worked for the sake of the assignment but isnt one of my favorites.
Division into halves would be an awesome shot, but one of the main problems is i had to always be at normal angle and normal camera height or else the picture would not count. I would have had her a bit more stylistically posed if it wasnt for people at the beach looking at us, and getting close to getting a free show.
These pictures were supposed to be more "screen grab" types then anything, yet when i finished they seem more photo-fashionesque. I can see that already everything ive learned in my language of film class has dramatically improved my photography. Would you agree? What ones did you REALLY like and why.
When you're going out shooting bring along one of those collapsible car window shields (the ones that are supposed to keep your car interior cool) they almost always have a reflective surface, and you can use this to light your subjects better.
you can also fold it up and stuff it in your backpack so you don't feel like a douche carrying around a 3x4 foot piece of white posterboard.
yeah some of the lighting was pretty off in a few of them, mainly those were me settling for a mediocre picture for the sake of just getting the credit i needed on the assignment, for the technicallity. This is a film class, we just needed stills to prove we knew wtf was asked of us.
Lighting is something i am now learning in my field production class, and now were getting into color in my film language class. Like i had said earlier, i absolutely despise how i can find no solid place to upload that doesnt destroy my colors short of starting up a web site again.
I'm so glad I didn't put my posterboard suggestion in my previous post.
A few photos I took earlier this year on vacation. They're pretty much just snapshots, but I tried to get some decent compositions.
i REALLY love that last one, the skyscraper is just fading into the distance almost.
Yeah, that one is pretty cool. I like how the skyscraper contrasts with the other buildings.
I'd crop out the reflection of the dark one on the scraper though. That little blotch on it from the building opposite is meh.
I like the reflection. I think it adds to the shot.
It would suck if the building thats being reflected wasn't also in the shot... but it is.
Its cool, if I used non-stock desktop backgrounds I'd probably use that as one.
Couple of more recent ones:
Oh, and one from the previous set... I really like this one because it kind of defies logic and seems really absurd:
I thought you knew her.
accidental artsy pictures are awesome, this is and olddddd one,

:O
just got back from Seattle (and hopefully moving there soon) yesterday and going to NYC on the 26th so i'll be adding some more here real soon.
I think it's on Trinity Place, west side of street, right at the WTC construction area. Near the northeast corner of ground zero, close to Vesey St. to the north and Fulton and Dey streets (to the east). You'll see some stairs going down below at the WTC site on Trinity Place, go down them and you'll be in a big open space leading to the escalators with that sign. That pic was in the open space there.
i'll keep my eye out for it.
still going thru my seattle pics. thought i'd throw a couple up in the meantime.
first two are from Deception Pass.

only 1 pic of the hot chicks FTL
i do love the first one
long story short. about 99% of the time somebody else was using the camera because i know if i have it on me it'll just hang from my shoulder. this was just an instant where i was "correcting" a problem for someone, saw the chicks and said "HEY!" girls love cameras. i took it and they got all pissed cause they associated flash with taking a pic. i told them i did, showed it to them and we proceeded to drink until the game. my camera was given away again right after the shot. seattle girls are fun.
I like that first one. I would have angeled the camera down a bit more in the last shot, but I always like to cut out the sky, since other people never seem to do it.
Drunk bitches just make me angry these days. A while ago I would have talked about putting things inside them.
what's funny is that i don't have any formal photography skills. i just snap off pictures i think will look good and occasionally crop in Photoshop. besides that i love taking out the color and in the case of the 2nd one, i adjusted the brightness/contrast until the sky blended into the trees/bridge in the upper right corner. i REALLY wish i could have gotten more of the needle/city but i was trying to navigate as well. hopefully i'll be moving out there soon anyway.
i have a couple panoramics i stitched together in Photoshop. will the SIMG function break them at all?
probably not. it'll display them in the thread shitty, but they'll look normal when clicked.
yep.... so how those pictures coming?
im gonna start hopefully this weekend on my second photo notebook. Hopefully josh hasnt died by then for another critique
That last one is really awesome, though I'd crop out the bottom to get rid of the cut-off flag completely. Unfortunately that would remove half the reflection of the other building.
i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the one with the bike, LOOOOOOVE it. What was the ISO speed (or compression?) cause it looks a bit grainy for me.
i'll have Vista tell me when i get home.
most of the pics turned out assy and grainy. this trip i bumped the res to 1600 instead of my usual 1200 and most came out that way. camera was set to auto most of the time since i didn't want to be concentrated on my camera with hundreds of people around me.
hey b,
2816x2112
f/3.5
1/200 second
like i said, i had changed the camera from 1600x1200 to wide 2816x1584 or 2272x1704. i had also changed it from fine to superfine. kinda pisses me off actually. some could have been a LOT better without all the noise. the ones here i actually cleaned up quickly in Photoshop. 300+ pics
i need to brush up on my depth of field sometime. i'll usually geta couple good ones when taking off random shots and i always lookk at them and wish i could remember exactly HOW i got it.
Dyne, did you have any more New York pics you could put up?
actually i have a shit ton from there and Seattle i still need to put up. i "think" i got that WTC spot you wanted but i'm not quite sure since they don;t really let you wander around too much anymore.
Nice shots B-Ri
thank you bandit.
This picture my teacher would not STFU about, he kept going off on how he loved the DOF, the lighting, positioning, the minor details with the leaves, and how well seperated he is perfectly lit vs the dark background. I couldnt wait till he would shut up.

Once again flickr really drains all the wonderful color that used to exist in this picture.
you just wanna see more of almost ALL the women i photograph dont you? Perv
she looks cute. more i say. now.
Couple I didn't post before:
I've got some nice Landscape shots in my collection. I'll go through them tonight and put em up here, see what you guys think.
scourge is that a dumpster cooking potato chips?
Here's another one of it, plus a few other shots.

i wish i would have paid the $15 or so to go on the top of the rock. oh well.
I'm thinking of taking up photography again but this, and I never liked it, digital age is confusing. Could anyone recommend me a good system camera? I'm looking for something around 1500-2000$ I guess.
Sorry for bringing this up in your creative thread btw.
As far as cameras go in that price range, I just grabbed a Nikon D300 as a somewhat Christmas present that I really love so far, still too new to give proper impressions, but it seems like a top piece for sure.
These are from the first half of an architectural series I did recently. I'm in Architecture school, and this area of photography interests me a lot. Check them on my flickr for write ups and descriptions; it's a really cool building.
Also, one of the shots got picked up by one of my favorite architecture blogs, so that was really cool. Got to see my own photo in my feed reader.
Dodge that fucking tree limb out in the last shot or the terrorists have already won.
No way. Lightening the tones of the trees would only lessen the impact of the main subject. The more contrast between the white triangle and the dark trees the better, I think.
PS. The terrorists won long ago, dodged limbs or not.
I was talking about the one in the upper right. The empty space up there would rule face.
I cloned that sucker out and it I think it really helps a lot.
Great suggestion.
Get that bow off that boy's head! Haven't you played Ms. Pac Man? You're gonna mess him up for life!
Great shots, though. :D
Thanks ;)
i completely agree.
Those last two black and whites are pretty bass, though I kinda wish the statue was up about an inch or two.
Next time crop them with the doom fist and you'll get your shot.
that last one is way too off contrast wise.
i just ordered a lens adapter and hood for my camera and have enough spare money for a tripod so i'm going to try and get out on the non snow days we've had lately.
eh. the whole picture just seems to be one solid tone. its because of the lack of direct lighting more than anything you can do in PS unfortunately.
Use the pantone colour publication and set up your monitor that way.
Anything less is uncivilized.
i should have some new pictures tonight sans i need to do a bit of photoshopping. A friend of mine needs pictures taken of her for her flyer for her birthday night at a local club, but shes incredibly indecisive on what she wants.
any last minute ideas TNL?
ive already taken pictures of her before

i was thinking maybe a dark action shot of her dancing around, her fully lit though in like a red tight dress.
i dunno.
red dress. yes.
here are some select ones, they can use some retouching, what does TNL think? I kept in mind its for a night club flyer, so i tried to give it enough space to put all the shit they do put on them. One could stand being a tad bit more in focus.
i see panties.
no other comments? what do you think? suggestions? :O
