More Amazing Touch Screen Work

I remember a while back a video was posted here, displaying Jeff Hans touch screen interface. People were saying it could be used in applications in almost everything and some people referenced it looking like the stuff from Minorit Report. Well, he upped it again and heres the newest version of his amazing touch screen work.
This time it actually looks alot like Minority and no doubt in a couple years or less he will have that whole system developed. (yes, especially the seeing the future part.)

Well this is all multi touch stuff...it seems like it would make some things a lot easier..
I HIGHLY doubt he has an intention of putting this in home computers or anything like that..

But..

That's really fucking awesome. I want one, with support for all my current programs along with good voice recognition and the eye mouse pointer.

You can push buttons on a touch screen and touching a keyboard makes it oily. Just saying.

I doubt that's really an issue if you're using a screen as big as Jeff is using. It looks really tacticle, the response you get from you touches are obvious and immediate.

I think it'll be neat if in the future large screen TVs come with this sort of functionality. The touch screen stuff wouldn't really replace a lot of the things we do on computers, but I think some of the functionality--like image and map browsing--would work well on a wall-mounted TV.

I'll only accept this with touchscreen remotes or notepads that can be used as an extension to the regular PC setup. We made some progress with that and the DS.

IAWTP. This is my biggest concern with the iPhone*. It's pretty stupid considering how necessary keys are for those who constantly text and e-mail on their Blackberries and other smart phones.

by the time touchscreen phones become the standard, i doubt people will be wasting time with text messaging when they could just send a voice message instead.

I think this will be a mainstream technology in the foreseeable future, but it won't replace traditional input methods. POS machines, information kiosks, tablet PCs, etc. would all benefit from the improved functionality, but do you really want to have to touch your tv or computer screen? It's not just a matter of getting shit dirty, there are ergonomic and practical reasons that make it a bad idea. I like to sit far from the tv, and holding my arms up to my computer monitor for hours at a time doesn't sound too healthy.

Well, like you said, you're not going to be typing up papers with a standard touch screen. Now, the trick is to get a touchscreen that can provide some kind of feedback so that you can tell when you're pressing icons. Imagine have a rectangular touchscreen below your monitor in place of a keyboard that can provide a tactile sensation; you'd be able to easily and quickly switch between application menus, visual shortcuts, commands, and standard keyboard layouts on the fly. This gives you an enourmous amount of control which is far more more intuitive than learning fifteen different variations of Ctrl+G depending on what program you have open.

Damn, that was freaking Minority Report-like, and quite impressive. Don't see how this could be practical for the average person. Impressive, nevertheless.

I don't understand how that will work for home use. I can see it being used like for board room meetings or a leacher in school, but for home use I'm not standing up do do shit. Or sitting that close to my monitor to touch it

I don't think it's even being developed for home use at the moment, considering the only people who could have them in their homes are Bill Gates and probably Warren Buffet. Can't wait till they start using that shit in 24 though.
