For someone to use a phrase sarcastically they would have to have a concept of what they are saying and how it means differently from what they mean. All of the idiots who use that phrase incorrectly actually think that "could care less" means that they don't care.

It's misuse of the language plain and simple.

That's just not true. People don't use language that way. When you use a phrase like "that guy really rubs me the wrong way," you don't even think about how it's a non-literal phrase. You're just familiar with the idiom, recognize that it fits the situation, and you say it. When you say something like that, it never even crosses your mind what the phrase actually means. You can absolutely use a sarcastic phrase without it ever entering your head that it's sarcastic.

Anyway, I think I've argued my point well enough, so I'm done gaying up this thread. If anyone else replies to my shit, I'm just going to call them stupid and fat.

Sarcasm is solely the intention of the speaker. If someone is saying "...could care less..." with serious intent when trying to indicate that something means nothing to them, then they are wrong and it is not sarcastic no matter what the phrase is.

That said, common usage should not dictate a thing about our language. I'm going to judge people harshly based on their command of grammar and spelling, regardless of whether or not other people think it's a "high horse" thing to do. Thinking so just means they aspire to be as intelligent as me (and, thereby, allowing them to judge people in the same manner).

If something means nothing to me, I say, "I couldn't care less." I couldn't care less about people who think I'm a snob or an asshole. I couldn't care less about offending anyone. Deal with it, you pussies.

If someone asks my opinion about something, and I don't even hold an opinion about it, I say, "I could care less," because I could have a care but do not. For example, "Hey, MVC, who do you like more on American Idol, [singer a] or [singer b]?" My response is, "I could care less," because I don't know enough to form an opinion. If you can't figure out the difference between that and me saying, "I couldn't care less. American Idol is shit," you're a numbskull.
