You can blame him for wearing out his bullpen in April, from Buster Olney, Espn Insider.
Last year, there were a grand total of three relievers among the 30 major league teams to amass more than 84 appearances. Right now, the Yankees have five relievers working on a pace to throw in 85 or more games, and three who have pitched in 14 of the team's first 21 games. At that pace, all three -- Scott Proctor, Luis Vizcaino and Mike Myers -- would surpass Mike Marshall's all-time record for appearances, of 106.
I've heard of an instance in which a Yankee pitcher has privately expressed great concern about his own physical well-being, believing he is at heightened risk for injury while being a member of the New York staff -- and you couldn't blame him. The Yankees' starting pitching has been awful, but at some point, Torre probably needs to tether himself to his seat in the dugout condition and watch the starters get whacked around, at least to save the bullpen from taking unnecessary abuse.
True, but in this east coast dominated thread, it should be said more often.
By the way, I think the Cubs, as laughable as their record is, are poised to go on a hot streak a have a nice +.500 month in May. Their RS-RA is an intriguing indicator. Sure, it's a bit distorted with their big wins (load blowing), but it also shows that they've lost a lot of close 1, 2-run games. Assuming their pitching can hold up and Big Z rounds into form, I think the offense will start producing consistently rather than in one big chunk followed by a few droughts.
The Mets have played some awful baseball against the Nationals of all teams. The Mets have been PUTRID with runners in scoring position especially with runners on third with less than 2 outs. David Wright needs to get his head out of his ass because he's just been totally garbage so far this season. Aaron Heilman has also been terrible with all his pitches up in the zone. Willie Randolph needs to chew out his team as its been totally unacceptable.
Also of note for tonights game..that first base ump (Tony Randazzo) is a fucking piece of shit who blew THREE calls. He even got in Willie's face to instigate a damn argument. Fucking umps can do whatever they please, showcase their fat fucking egos and I'm sure get off scott free.
(edit: ok..the mets came back to beat those awesome Nats. Still doesn't excuse their poor play with runners on base)
What a game.
I feel bad for Matt Cain. He now has four straight starts giving up 1 run or less. His record coming in to today was 1-1 and it looks like the bullpen is about to blow another one for him.
It'd also help if the Giants had any kind of offense besides Bonds.
Edit: Yup, there it is. Poor kid. The only way he can win is by pitching a complete game.
I feel bad for me, since I have him.
Um, what the fuck happened in Cleveland? Shouldn't the umps know the rulebook really fucking well?
