I tried to play Alpha Protocol and it wouldn't even start up. After doing a bit of research, it turns out I had to copy some .dll files from my Windows directory into the Alpha Protocol directory. Then it worked fine, but why? I have had a terrible number of games (terrible = 1) fail to start up after I purchase them off Steam, and it always comes down to some .dll bullshit. Is that a common issue, and would someone with less experience or patience be like totally fuck this shit?

I think it's because Steam uses its own launcher and saves files in a different location than normal. It seems to mess with the games themselves, because I know mods and addons can have a really hard time with some non-Valve games.

Maybe that DirectX or .net Framework update thing didn't start properly at first launch? Alpha Protocol worked for me so I bet your computer is broken and it's your fault.

It was just a couple of .dlls I had to copy over, seems like a pretty common error from the few searches I did. Works fine now, PS the game is rad so far.

I have issues with about 75% of the games I try on Steam. No other service or version of games has given me that much trouble.

I don't think I've had an issue with any game on Steam. It almost has to be a machine issue.

Same. I know a handful of mods don't play too nice, but can eventually work. I've never had any issue like Compass is having with FO3GOTY(I always misread that as faggoty) or Mzo's Alpha Protocol.

Same here. What have you people done to your computers!? There is no way the Steam dependency stuff should fail to properly install.

Edit: If you're using Vista or 7, you might want to put Steam in a place other than the UAC-controlled Program Files. That might be causing file writing issues.
