I think they're doing all this TF2 shit as practice for DOTA2. They always dick around with their old games to practice for new ones. DOTA2 will be F2P, with an item store, and item trading.

That certainly makes sense. I'm more interested in the extra copies of games than the in-game stuff though.

What on earth is up with developers going full retard on the always-on DRM? Nobody likes it. Everyone hates anyone who thinks it's a good idea. The only people who like the thought of it work in the game industry. Games don't get bought because of it, although nowhere near as many as people annoyed by this practice claim. It's a failed idea that needs to die. How hard is this to understand?

I like how he's all stoked on having shit automatically updated for you when Steam or any other DD platform should be taking care of that.
The problem is, it's impossible to gauge its effect on sales. They look at reduced piracy numbers and think "Oh, it's effectively limiting piracy, so our sales must be better than they would be without it." Since no one knows for certain how it would have sold otherwise, they can always spin it in their favor.
The best way to reduce piracy is to make a game nobody wants to play. Beyond that, piracy should be a non-factor in any business decisions. People who want to pirate, will. There's no way to control that, but plenty of ways to make people feel justified that piracy is the way to go. Bullshit arguments, maybe, but that warm sense of justification doesn't equal an extra sale.

I wouldn't even mind obnoxious DRM if they patched it out after like 3 months. DRM is completely and utterly irrelevant after 3 months. You sell 75% or more of your product in the first 3 months and even the best DRM in the world will inescapably be cracked by then, so any way you slice it they'd have nothing to lose by giving their customers that courtesy after the initial hassle.
It also accomplishes NOTHING.
Every game that has ever used this has been cracked and every game that ever will in the future will be. Diablo 3 will be torn to shreds by one of the dozens of scene groups within three days and people will be playing it on private servers within a week. I'll totally being playing a real version, for fucking sure because I want to be on battlenet with my friends, but I'm not so stupid as to think that this whole always on DRM shit will stop any would be pirates.
