That's a fairly hardline stance coming from someone who's... y'know... not a comic.

He dabbled.
Why would I have to be a comic to have an opinion on what I like? I'm just saying the comics that I think are truly great have been very committed to it. I'm not saying "If you're a great comic and you bail, then I don't consider you a great comic any more." I'm just saying that, as far as I've seen, great comics don't bail on comedy.
I agree. Eddie Murphy I saw on the Actors Guild show was still funny. But he fell into what I consider to be a very moody person.
He made an appearance for the Comedy Store in 1996, but with all the money he makes in movies, why does he have a need to go back on stage? His early television and movies were comedic acts, so why is he not considered a comedian?
Eddie Murphy made 2 stage acts for video/audio, but he's pretty much stayed with movies, after he left his gig on SNL.

A comedic actor is not the same thing as a comedian or a comic. And the true greats of stand up comedy as a form enjoy it for the medium it is and continue to persue it even though they don't "have to." which is what I was getting at.
Believe me, Dave Chappelle doesn't "have to" go on stage at this point either. But he does, because there's something special about being on stage and performing his own material.
He sold out is what you could have said.
No, because that's not the point. It's not that he did movies, it's that he gave up comedy.
Anyway, I don't know why we're talking about Jim Carrey. Richard Jeni is a perfect example of a real comedian. He did TV, movies, made a lot of money, but he still got on stage and did comedy constantly, because he was committed to it.
Frog is a big standup comedy fanboy. I'm guessing "what a real comedian is" is probably some debate those people have all of the time which most other people don't really care to think about, kind of like how some gamers get about use of the term "RPG" or how random music fans get about the classification of random music.
Also: people shooting themselves in the face sucks.
