The key is for the mid-tier games to fill niches and not be stupid and try to directly compete. If you're a Deep Silver and try to publish a multiplayer shooter with intentions of knocking off Battlefield and Call of Duty, you're an idiot. Almost every game on my list above is light on competition in its niche.
Unless the people making BD were working for cheap, that didn't make money. Same for Spec Ops. There are a few other games on there too. But large publishers are not interested in breaking even, because they probably already have a foothold in whatever genre these incoming games would represent. A smaller publisher is more likely.
But even still, what are you defining as medium budget? I was thinking Spec Ops is more medium than MotN. But I don't know if we are talking average, median, whatever metric you want to come up with.
You are going to see a lot less Spec Ops this gen. Which is actually too bad.
I honestly have no idea what a good definition for "big budget" is and what would fall below. My intention was to be pretty conservative with that list.
I could not agree with this more, assuming the first part works out to be true. One thing to keep in mind is that multiplatform games will be cheaper to port than ever before, so hopefully that helps out the medium guys.
The line between horror and action games is usually little more than the setting and how well the atmosphere is pulled off, so it ends up being on the person as to how much it fits. Yes, there is the occasional one where the protagonist is totally helpless or super weak like Rule of Rose, but a lot of people will also put stuff like FEAR and Metro in there which I think lean way too far into their other respective genres.Quote:
Is it too much to ask for a new, HD Fatal Frame?
Sure, it'd be nice, but I find it doesn't really matter aside from specific sequels like MML3 and BG&E2. I'm perfectly okay with getting games from other publishers, like Distance, Chasm, and Teslagrad.Quote:
