Super Mario Bros 3. The first and only game I was ever given because I beat another. My uncle told me that if I beat Super Mario Bros., he'd get me this. Needless to say, two days after I beat the game, he showed up to my house with a fresh copy of SMB3. I remember firing it up around 5:00 in the evening. At one in the morning my Mom came in and was like "It's one o'clock, you're still awake?". First time I lost track of time playing a game.
Metroid 2. One of those gem games you get as a kid where you didn't ask for it, but are too glad you got it. I remember this was under the tree along with my new Game Gear. This was my first Metroid game, and the first game to scare the shit out of me. I've yet to play a Metroid game I don't like. While Super Metroid is my favorite, this one doesn't get the respect it deserves.
Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past My first Zelda game, and when I finally bought a Super NES in '94, this was the pack-in game. I remember that until Super Metroid, no other game sucked me into it's world like this one. Without this game, I would NEVER have given EarthBound a shot.
Sonic The Hedgehog I'm referring to the Game Gear version. Back in 2nd Grade, this game was available as a mail-in game if you sent in the Game Gear UPC. I was immediately hooked, and back in '91 when I was given the choice of a Sega Genesis or a Super Nintendo, I chose the system that came with Sonic. I don't regret my choice.
Ex-Ranza This was my first import game. While the controls were awkward at first, they very soon became second nature. This game was beautiful to look at, and it was disheartening to see how Japan at the time got full color manuals and detailed backstories, whereas we got shitty black and white bullshit. It gave me an appreciation for different ideas.
MUSHA Another import, this game was just sick. The music, the graphics, everything just flowed. This game made me fall in love with shooters.
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine The first game me and my Mom would compete against together where we were both on equal ground. Me and her would also play Bomberman Online for Dreamcast, and we'd spend most of the time just trying to kill one another.
Jet Grind Radio I don't know what it is, but there's just something about this game that kinda encapsulates everything about the Dreamcast for me. Different, stylish, overlooked, and immensely entertaining. I'd rather play this than any Tony Hawk game.
