Would you care about this if it wasn't Star Wars? Serious question.

Nope, unless it was another good sci fi property, like Battlestar Galactica or Firefly, at least. But that's part of my argument. There are a billion Star Wars fans that automatically become part of the potential audience if they don't follow SOE's alienation plan from Galaxies.
I'm not convinced that MMO players don't want story-driven content. Or at least, a strong, story-driven path to the max-level. Sure, I skipped over the majority of quest-text in WoW but events that actually took place during the quests and the shitty cutscenes in Cataclysm did a lot to get me interested in what was actually going on in the world. I understand your argument that a lot of people just gloss over the story in the interest of leveling quickly but I feel like it's less likely when it's either incorporated into the gameplay well or part of a well-produced cutscene.
I mean, the biggest changes to WoW with each expansion has been the money dumped into making the quests more than just "skip text, kill monsters, deliver quest item, return to quest giver".
There's already a mediocre Star Wars MMO with space combat, Yoshi. I don't need to pay another 100 dollars to experience that all over again.
WOW was good because the missions were fun, and quite frankly the environments were very well designed. Lots of lush gardens, things to see and you truly felt as though each time you progressed past a milestone you were rewarded with an entirely new level to explore and challenge to overcome. It looks like they took the same stifled approach to this MMO as they did the last. Just because it makes sense in the Old Republic to have a bunch of Jedi's doesn't mean the game is worth playing.
I kept my eye on this because I was hoping it would be a truly fun experience. Doesn't look like the case now. I tried getting back in to WOW again too. It was actually good fun but for me too much of a timesync. I got to Stranglethorn Vale and had some fun PVPing and questing. But then I reached that threshold where I questioned what I was getting out of the experience. I feel from watching the vids and checking up on that game I'd reach that threshold at about 2 or 3 hours in.
Plus, Galaxies' biggest weakness (and that's saying something by the end there) was that everyone wanted to be a Jedi, and there were only supposed to be a couple alive during that period.
SW Galaxies was the first, and probably the last MMO I'll ever play. The old Republic looks interesting, but I can't imagine it being interesting enough to pay for every month, like I did for over a year with Galaxies.
I hope you managed to avoid the "oh shit" moment on the Internet. If not, some of the awesome will be lost.
Maybe one day we'll even get a finished version of KOTOR 2.
I can dream.
Yoshi I forbade you from purchasing this game.
What?
KOTOR is on the App Store.
I guess I'm gonna play it again. :tu:
Lies. :(
What?
KOTOR being an Apple App. :( I believed for a moment.
Duuuuur MAC app. Lol.
App Store, AKA Google. LOL
Awww :(
Yeah the Mac app store seems to be crazy overpriced 99% of the time when it comes to games.
In before jokes.
So I got into a beta round. Starts tomorrow.
Lucky?
If it makes you feel better I've been signed up for the beta since like 5 years ago?
You don't think I have been?
I don't know how you live your life, sir.
Someday, this installer will finish and I'll be able to play this game.
I wish I could remember which email I used for the beta signup.
I wish my email received a beta.
<--- jelly :(
Turns out I am! I can tell you I'm in the program and and that there is a game called The Old Republic. I'll move my discussions somewhere else.
I didn't know Chux smoked choad.
(of course he probably can't disclose that)
Use your force and resist this crap.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
You cannot escape your destiny.
I got burned out after 20 levels, but I think it has more to do with nobody I know playing it, vs the actual game.
That and the steam sale...
Racist.
Also, I thought we established that yoshi isn't black.
Preorders are open!
Pre-ordered mine through amazon and they sent me the pre-order code.
Apparently you'll get access to the game 7 days early with the Collector's Edition Pre-order and 3 days early with the rest if pre-ordered.
Ditto.
This was one of the questions I was asked as part of the marketing test.
You're welcome.
So from what I can tell, EA is charging an extra $5 or £5 to pre-order this on Origin.
From some GAF guy:
ghst: if i buy after release, will i save £5 by not pre-ordering?
Jeremy: Yes
ghst: can you perhaps clarify that some more?
ghst: *could you
Jeremy: Sure
Jeremy: If you purchase the game after release you will lack the preorder items which you receive while preordering the game.
...
ghst: just to clarify, the £5 charge is purely for pre-orders, and the standard origin price will be £40 after release - but i won't receive the pre-order bonus items?
Jeremy: Yes
Also, $60 + monthly fee, holy shit.
Wait what? $60 hurrrrrrrr.
I kept saying in my survey I'd pay no more than $10 a month for it. Hope others said it too.
It's an MMO, it'll be on sale for $40 during the first month probably three or four times.
waitwaitwait. $60 a month?
No, the game price is $60. I'd be shocked if the monthly fee was anything other than the WoW standard $15.
Yeah, they'd have to be retarded to go over the $15 a month. And they'd be really smart to go with $10/mo to maybe swing some of the casual WOWers on over.
You have to give BioWare credit for having the cajones to claim the game will make it to 2025 and warrant an art and making of book.
It's a Star Wars product. You could release an art book entirely of toilets in the Star Wars universe and it would sell.
Hmm, Star Wars guide to Exotic plumbing.
I'd probably go for the art book at $26 if I knew when it was dropping. With the Collector's Edition, the iPhone 5, the Vita, and a shload of other games all potentially coming before the end of the year, I have to stay conscious of keeping myself on budget. I'm actually rooting for the Vita to miss the holiday season, as that's the lowest priority, but I'd still like to have it at launch.
I kinda got lucky with the Vita. I had $275 in Visa gift cards from signing up for new internets and TV with AT&T. So I just pretended that the Vita was the sign-up bonus and paid it off on a pre-order. Unfortunately since the cards were going to expire last month I had to go with somewhere that would actually charge them right away (Gamestop, bleh) instead of Amazon.
Preordering it on the assumption that it'll have strong 1P as Bioware claims....I'm thinking it'll be 50/50 that I get burned on this.
That is probably a bad reason to buy an MMO.
It is a bad reason, but if there were any MMO where the 1p Story was most fleshed out, this is it.
I didn't have a bad time with the beta, but I wanted to be able to play with friends.
There's always going to be stuff you can't do on your own. If you're cool with building up to nothing and then dropping it like it's hot after getting to the endgame, go nuts.
Im going to start out playing it like KoTor 3. which is what it should have been. end game we'll see.
That's like saying I'm going to fuck this broad bareback and right when I'm about to bust all up in her I'm going to punch myself in the dick.
If you employed that strategy, you'd be saving some money right now.
Don't I fucking know it. Lets assume for this example she is on the pill.
Oh hay, just got a beta invite.
I fucking hate EA. I probably fucked myself by registering the preorder code.
I'm not a big arena PvP guy, but I can get behind Huttball:
I got a survey a few days ago, asking if they should tweak space combat, or take it out completely.
I said tweak, but still that's not a good sign.
How the fuck did they mess up space combat?
I didn't get to it, but I guess Bioware hasn't really had a good track record with vehicles in games?
Survey says!Quote:

Never tell me the odds.
I finally got my beta invite. Productivity tomorrow -1000
edit: Downloading Main Assets 1 19.1GB remaining
Do you automatically get into the beta if you've preordered? I haven't registered my code yet.
I don't think so. That's early access to the actual game.
Ugh, my guild is up to 31 members so far and only 1 has gotten a beta invite and that was from before the guild system was setup. Hopefully beta weekends start up soon.
Free to play byyyyyyyyyyyy
December 2012
Unlikely. But this and WoW pretty much are going to choke out the market for everything else.
Is anyone else who preordered this planning to play on the correct side (as opposed to Timber's band of terrorists)? If you're interested, I can add you now to The Nefarious Legion.
There's a very good chance I'll end up going to whatever server my brother goes to, but if you're okay with that I'll join.
I looked up Nefarious Legion. If you're going by the handle DarthKraken, Yoshi, you may consider just Kraken, as Darth will be a title for Sith Warriors. Well, actually, dark side Sith Warriors...and you won't be able to have Darth in your name:
http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?p=6089500Quote:
It will likely not come as a surprise to most people that the titles of Darth and Lord are story-based rewards (one does not become a Darth by grinding frog-dogs) as are Master, etc. What may come as a surprise is that not everyone who completes a Sith or Jedi story will achieve them. There are always choices and those choices matter in many ways, including your notoriety and the rewards or reputation you earn. Darth will absolutely be off-limits when creating names.
Yeah, I'm not going to be one of those tools with Darth Darth<name>. That's just my forum handle.
I think they're going to assign guilds to a server, but you and your brother are welcome to join if that's the case (or if it's not).
